I seriously this doesn't turn into one of those threads where everyone starts talking about how everything was better back in their day and how kids these days don't play real games.

And I don't really hate Cliffy, but this does come off as kinda hypocritical, and I usually hate that word.

I don't think we need an Arena shooter, I think we need one that could be on all platforms, none of this one way street bullshit.

Me, I'd be happy with one that was focused on a specific platform and doesn't screw over the experience due to platform/control limitations of others.

Most of the "haters" aren't questioning his knowledge. There's a bit of irony in telling people to get the whole story when you don't seem interested in what people are actually saying in the first place.

What you're saying is analogous to responding to "smoking causes cancer" with "I smoke, and I don't have caner." Which is great for you. It doesn't really mean much.

Or, maybe a more apt example, people denying that MLP is for kids by saying they watch it and theyr're hardly kids. Well, that's nice, but are they the intended audience? I doubt the show would be on the air without kids supporting it. And without the dudebros, Marcus would be sitting on the side of the road with a sign saying "will bromance for food."

And....Seriously, do I need to go on? Gears was a regular trailblazer in pretty much every matter that brought the dudebros to the yard. And that includes the stuff he's complaining modern gamers are familiar with. It's almost on par with the creators of the Walking Dead claiming we are into too much zombie material or something.

And you know what? Dudebro shooters are fine. There's no real reason for people to be bothered by the label. That doesn't really change the market. Gears titles are not some counter-culture gaming phenomenon. They were some of the Xbox's biggest sellers, especially the early ones. I hear the last couple haven't fared as well. I don't care too much, as my interest waned during 2. But honestly, whatever floats people's boat.

It seems more likely the "kiddies" in question will stick with the familiar. Just because there exists a predecessor genre doesn't mean that everyone in the successor genre cares. That's not to say people will never buy this. And if people want an arena shooter, good for them. Personally, I could do without any genre of shooter for a while, but it seems the market still thinks everything has to be a shooter, so that ain't happening.

But to assume "the kiddies" are going to love it is similar to a grandfather assuming his grandkids are going to enjoy the same sort of media he did.

OK Mr. Grumpy pants, whatever you say. I was just hoping the kiddos (didn't say kiddies, since we're picking nits) would get an opportunity to try out an insanely fast-paced style of gaming like I grew up on. I have no doubt large sections of them will love it. The shooters you lament, the ones the market can't seem to get enough of, you ever wonder why that is? Maybe it's because those games are propping up the entire industry of AAA titles right now? Maybe we're looking down the business end of a collapse of the AAA industry? (Might not be bad for that to happen.) Be specific. "The Market" you refer to is for AAA titles. There's a vibrant industry in indie games and smaller titles, as far as I can tell. Maybe we're just witnessing the market correcting itself slowly.

No, but when he starts talking about moving back to a platform whose users he did nothing but dump shit on for several years it's reasonable enough to point out the hypocrisy.

To be fair, being on consoles never stopped his complaints about used game sales or how beta testing games on consoles is a pain-in-the-ass when console users aren't able to tweak the game under the hood like PC gamers.

At least he's consistent.

If he wants to recapture the moddable magic that was Unreal Tournament '99, I'm with him all the way to the bank. If he thinks there was ever anything to his games after that one title, he can fuck right off. 2003, 2004, and... 3... were crimes against humanity. Gears of Thumbstick Controller is a non-entity to me, can't play it and don't want to.

My point is that while he had a key part in making cover-based shooters and badmouthed PC gaming, he is now advocating old-school arena shooters on the PC. This says a lot about this man's integrity.

I don't have anything against the cover-based shooter genre/gameplay mechanic and I don't see what part of my post states that.

And then we'd only end up with a good number of people from say the other 3 platforms wanting something like that game on their systems, if they don't get it then hate gets thrown and if they did the first platform would go all apples and oranges on them (talking about PC there).

We've seen what Rome 2 looked like when came out only for the PC and look how that turned out, not every single PC only game becomes an impervious gem.
