Show us a good game and we'll buy it. If he's really committed to the platform he left and who's users he then proceeded to berate, then he better have something good.
"A arena shooter that could be on all platforms" is how we ended up with the mess that was UT3.Shadow-Phoenix said:And what does wanting to make an Arena shooter do for the entire industry and those "COD kids?", absolute fuck all to be honest, especially if he's going to declare support for one specific platform that he's lambasted in the past.
I don't think we need an Arena shooter, I think we need one that could be on all platforms, none of this one way street bullshit.
OK Mr. Grumpy pants, whatever you say. I was just hoping the kiddos (didn't say kiddies, since we're picking nits) would get an opportunity to try out an insanely fast-paced style of gaming like I grew up on. I have no doubt large sections of them will love it. The shooters you lament, the ones the market can't seem to get enough of, you ever wonder why that is? Maybe it's because those games are propping up the entire industry of AAA titles right now? Maybe we're looking down the business end of a collapse of the AAA industry? (Might not be bad for that to happen.) Be specific. "The Market" you refer to is for AAA titles. There's a vibrant industry in indie games and smaller titles, as far as I can tell. Maybe we're just witnessing the market correcting itself slowly.Zachary Amaranth said:Most of the "haters" aren't questioning his knowledge. For starters, read this all the way [http://dudehugespeaks.tumblr.com/post/53457606850/brutal-honest-thoughts-on-this-whole-debacle] and then tell me that he doesn't know what he's talking about.
OT: Thank goodness. Unreal fans have been screaming for a good sequel to UT for a while now since UT3 was lackluster to say the least.
I enjoyed Black Ops 2, and I'm an ambidextrous bisexual. Using one's self as an argument against a trend doesn't tend to prove much.Arnoxthe1 said:Yep. And you know what? I actually liked GoW3. And I'm hardly a "dudebro."
...Unless you do think that by my example, your standard Call of Duty player is ambidextrous and bisexual.
What you're saying is analogous to responding to "smoking causes cancer" with "I smoke, and I don't have caner." Which is great for you. It doesn't really mean much.
Or, maybe a more apt example, people denying that MLP is for kids by saying they watch it and theyr're hardly kids. Well, that's nice, but are they the intended audience? I doubt the show would be on the air without kids supporting it. And without the dudebros, Marcus would be sitting on the side of the road with a sign saying "will bromance for food."
Just when he tries to court the people he's previously bitched and moaned about in a stunning display of stupidity, short-sightedness and/or hypocrisy.josemlopes said:I know the Escapist here isnt very fond of Cliffy B but do you guys have to stomp him every time he says something?
Seriously, man, this is a strange time to be drawing a line in the sand.
Except the fanbase, which is what largely defines a dudebro shooter as dudebro.UberPubert said:...even though the only thing Gears of War had in common with "dudebro" shooters is that they both have guns in them.
Seriously, the GoW series couldn't stand any more apart from typical modern shooters, stop trying to group them together.
Oh, and being one of the big pioneers of regenerating health as a trend.
And the propensity for narrow halls and smaller environments.
And the slow, lumbering hulk of a man deal.
And a large dose of gritty brownness.
And....Seriously, do I need to go on? Gears was a regular trailblazer in pretty much every matter that brought the dudebros to the yard. And that includes the stuff he's complaining modern gamers are familiar with. It's almost on par with the creators of the Walking Dead claiming we are into too much zombie material or something.
And you know what? Dudebro shooters are fine. There's no real reason for people to be bothered by the label. That doesn't really change the market. Gears titles are not some counter-culture gaming phenomenon. They were some of the Xbox's biggest sellers, especially the early ones. I hear the last couple haven't fared as well. I don't care too much, as my interest waned during 2. But honestly, whatever floats people's boat.
That's...Rather optimistic.VonBrewskie said:yesssssssssssssssss. Whatcha got Cliffy-B? Time for some bad-ass rocket jumping and railguns. Let these kiddos get some real action. They'll friggin' love it!
It seems more likely the "kiddies" in question will stick with the familiar. Just because there exists a predecessor genre doesn't mean that everyone in the successor genre cares. That's not to say people will never buy this. And if people want an arena shooter, good for them. Personally, I could do without any genre of shooter for a while, but it seems the market still thinks everything has to be a shooter, so that ain't happening.
But to assume "the kiddies" are going to love it is similar to a grandfather assuming his grandkids are going to enjoy the same sort of media he did.
Perhaps, but you won't get as many sales as you want by pissing off the very customers your trying to sell to.Raiyan 1.0 said:To be fair, being on consoles never stopped his complaints about used game sales or how beta testing games on consoles is a pain-in-the-ass when console users aren't able to tweak the game under the hood like PC gamers.RhombusHatesYou said:No, but when he starts talking about moving back to a platform whose users he did nothing but dump shit on for several years it's reasonable enough to point out the hypocrisy.josemlopes said:I know the Escapist here isnt very fond of Cliffy B but do you guys have to stomp him every time he says something?
At least he's consistent.
Seconded! Didn't the third game get cancelled solely due to a catastrophic shipping error? Whatever happened to that?Evil Smurf said:I want a new Jazz JackRabbit. That's a game I would back.
My point is that while he had a key part in making cover-based shooters and badmouthed PC gaming, he is now advocating old-school arena shooters on the PC. This says a lot about this man's integrity.josemlopes said:And the point is? He (his team) popularized a "new" gameplay style that wasnt all that much present and therefore its bad? Saying Call of Duty being a twitch shooter with a lot of assists like killstreaks and easy to use weapons not being a proper arena shooter is wrong how?Doom972 said:"A lot of these kids playing Call of Duty- I don't think they know what a proper arena shooter is."
Funny coming from the guy who made cover-based third-person shooters popular.
I know the Escapist here isnt very fond of Cliffy B but do you guys have to stomp him every time he says something?
Smmooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth, +1 this. I lost faith in Cliff a while ago. I'll let him MAKE the bloody game, then i'll judge IT for its merits. I'll never love him again...RhombusHatesYou said:Apparently he wants to reset the clock on everything he said about PC gamers being pirates and whiners, too.IanDavis said:Apparently he really wants to reset the clock on AAA games
And then we'd only end up with a good number of people from say the other 3 platforms wanting something like that game on their systems, if they don't get it then hate gets thrown and if they did the first platform would go all apples and oranges on them (talking about PC there).PMAvers said:"A arena shooter that could be on all platforms" is how we ended up with the mess that was UT3.Shadow-Phoenix said:And what does wanting to make an Arena shooter do for the entire industry and those "COD kids?", absolute fuck all to be honest, especially if he's going to declare support for one specific platform that he's lambasted in the past.

Me, I'd be happy with one that was focused on a specific platform and doesn't screw over the experience due to platform/control limitations of others.
I pretty much agree, the guy made his bed let him lay in it. I loved unreal tournament and bought every game that came out, I was really upset when he said I was a pirate and that consoles were the future. So as far as I'm concerned he can enjoy his future, I'll play some Natural Selection 2.RhombusHatesYou said:Apparently he wants to reset the clock on everything he said about PC gamers being pirates and whiners, too.IanDavis said:Apparently he really wants to reset the clock on AAA games

On top of other stupid things he said.
I'd be calling bullshit too, if a high profile deve who did a whole lot of name calling and degradation to a specific platform of players is all of a sudden praising PC as the highest game form.
He's not "praising PC as the highest game form", showing that you didn't really read the article.
