Halo 2 Is Holding Back Your Xbox Live Social Life

The mystery of why you can't have more than 100 friends on Xbox Live seems to have been finally solved, and it turns out that it's all Halo 2's fault.

I don't know why you'd ever want to have 100 friends on Xbox Live. Can you really play games with that many people, or even want to keep track of what games that many people are playing? Okay, forget what I think. Clearly, there are people there who want to have friend counts on Xbox Live that stretch into Facebook-realms of triple digits. And yet, Microsoft has always said no. But they've never said why.

Well, they still haven't but G4 [http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/698157/The-Real-Reason-You-Cant-Have-More-Than-100-Xbox-Live-Friends----Halo-2.html#readmore]'s "high-level source" at Microsoft has. Turns out that the reason you can't have 100 friends is because of some lingering architecture from the old Xbox Live, which didn't allow you to have more. So why not just ditch those crummy old parts? Well, apparently they're vital to the Xbox Live support of Halo 2. Without them, Halo 2 would be unplayable.

That would put the many folks who still play the game out in the cold, something Microsoft apparently isn't willing to do. So either the company ditches the fans who are still dedicated to the game (I wasn't aware people were still that into Halo 2), or they give into your silly demands for a bigger friends list cap. What's more important: letting people play the game they love or adding that many more dudes to your Xbox Live account? I think you all know the answer.

You'd think Microsoft would want to encourage people to go but Halo 3 instead of continuing to play Halo 2.

Really? People should just play Halo 3 instead if they're that whiny, I mean I'm surprised it still supports Halo 2.
Not everyone who liked Halo 2 likes Halo 3, and those users still pay for xbox live gold.

Well, I only have around 15 friends, and I don't really care. I only add people who I like, or my real life friends that play games with me a lot. I think Microsoft is in the right state of mind in this situation.

I HAVE a hundred friends, but most of them are ancients who haven't logged on in ages. I just don't see the point in going in and deleting them all, especially sense I mostly just play with my IRL friends now.

I still play Halo 2 from time to time. It's somewhat hard to get a game, depending on what playlist you choose. It's impossible in Skirmish, but you can round up a game in Slayer, and there's almost always people playing Big Team Battle.

Exactly...

My xfire has nearly a hundred names back when CoD2 was what it was all about and I was a big deal...but times change...no one keeps track of these people... (most are playing MMO's are other FPS's...)

I have... 26 friends, almost exclusively people from my school. I have 1 guy who live in America, and my cousin.

I only really play games with him.

Thank god for the 100 friend cap. I have so many people begging (even to the level of wanting to pay) to be on my friend's list, I need something to keep them away.

I'm sorry, but I would never want more than 100 friends on XBL. I don't even have that many friends on Facebook!

Wow that's pretty desperate! Online friendships are pretty devalued as it is. I have "friends" in Second Life that I have only spoken two words with, and they send me an invite. A cap's the perfect thing.

Agreed with Utarefson. It shouldn't be too hard to make a patch for it (ok it may cost them several hundred dollars etc. but Goddamnit they are the ones that decided to cheap out and copy past old code expecting everything to be alright. Don't punish the player for big companies remaining cheap basterds

I've only got 42 xbox live friends. And out of those I only play with about 12. The rest are there for who knows what reason.

Personally, I don't see the point in having that many friends on XBL, and I think it's far nobler of Microsoft to look after their old fans like that regardless.

Oh well, I can't imagine having that many XBL friends, anyway.

I'm glad the Halo 2 players can still enjoy the game they love.
