Shadow of the Colossus Hits The Big Screen

A big screen adaptation of Team ICO's PlayStation 2 game has gotten underway at Sony Pictures.

Regardless of whether or not film adaptations of videogames ever turn out good, some seem like obvious choices and some don't. 50 Cent [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88942-Gears-of-War-Movie-A-Harder-Lord-of-the-Rings] is doing it. Shadow of the Colossus? No, absolutely not. Nevertheless, producer Kevin Mishner over at Sony Pictures is determined to turn Team ICO's minimalistic tale of love, loss and killing gigantic creatures into a big screen bonanza.

Attached to pen the screenplay is Justin Marks, who worked on Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li as well as the upcoming 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake currently underway at Disney.

No offense to Marks or his work, but anyone who's played Shadow of the Colossus knows it'll take a lot to turn it into a Hollywood-style narrative. Because while Shadow of the Colossus has one of the most powerful stories I've yet experienced in a videogame, the narrative isn't exactly flush with action. Most of what happens occurs before the game even really begins and then at the very end. Everything else in between is just killing colossi and being sad while riding around on your horse, by yourself. On top of that, the story has a far from fairy tale conclusion.

So don't be surprised to hear that they're planning on making some changes to the plot. According to The Cut Scene [http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/04/shadow-of-the-colossus-movie-in-development.html]'s Ben Fritz, who's an acquaintance of Marks, the movie might involve bringing minor characters from the game (like the tribal leader trying to stop the main character) into bigger roles, and will be going for what Fritz calls a "Lord of the Rings-style fantasy tentpole."

I just hope they get a really good horse to play Agro, because that thing is going to be seriously overworked.

This sounds like it could be really really hard to pull off. I mean, the main character has ONE line of dialogue, and that's just him calling his horse. The entire point of the game, at least from my experience, was to appreciate the colossi, not the story. The story wasn't really explicitly laid out, you had to dig for it. So either they can make the story blaring in your face to pander to the perceived movie-going public nowadays, or they can let it remain subtle and watch noone like it but the game's fans. I mean, I loved the cinematography in the game, and I loved the majestic sweeping views of the colossi, but good camera work doesn't make a good movie. And really, how many people want to WATCH someone climbing up a bunch of colossi just to stab them?

They really need to choose games that fit the movie format better if they ever want to get the video game movie genre off the ground. I'm not saying Shadow of the Colossus was a bad game but it wouldn't be my first pick in the line of games that deserve movie adaptations.

Hopefully there's no terrible dialogue or acting, and instead the movie ends up being nothing but epic, climactic colossi fights, and hauntingly beautiful setting.

There's one way I can imagine this not sucking. Giving the original game creators near complete control over the entire project.

Like that's ever going to happen.

I would definitely watch "Shadow of Colossus" if it were released as a depressingly-epic-fantasy-adventure experimental-no-dialogue film.

As a Hollywood product...I have my doubts.

And they better not harm "Agro" during the production! :p

Oh shit. Oh shit oh shit oh shit.

I don't know whether to be bouncing with glee or crying with agony.

Most likely the latter....

FUCK, don't screw this up, for God's sake don't screw this potential masterpiece up!

Ugh... and to think I thought it couldn't get any worse than the live-action Dragonball movie. I mean, even counting minor characters, that brings the cast to about 4. And one of those is a disembodied voice, and the other is dead for 95% of the story. Let's also not forget that there's not a single place on Earth that could live up to the environments in that game, with or without CGI.

Instead of goofing around with this, they should port it [and Ico] to all the current gen consoles..no doubt I'll be branded a heretic for this..

I'm more interested in the fact that he's remaking 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Now THAT sounds interesting. Re-reading that at the moment.
I don't know if you guys wanna be too psyched about that either, McG is directing it. You know, the Charlie's Angels guy.

I'm not a film buff [last one I've seen was Watchmen. I disliked it a great deal]. But I know that's bad, because moviebob says so.

Murphy's Law. You cannot, and will not, escape its unholy wrath.
I would like to see it along the lines of "Children of Men" in terms of heartwrenchingness.
Feel free to suggest another, better movie to use as an analogy, as this is the only really good one I've seen.

its being written by the same person who wrote the legend of chun-li...

Do the people at Sony even pay attention to the semi-liquid shit they spew out? Do they realize that Chun-li was a massive failure and that they are hiring on the same writer to assassinate one of their greatest games? Its like hiring the author of the Twilight series to write a gears of war movie.

I fucking hate sony right now

It won't be (and it's not in the right hands to become), but SoC could make for an amazing movie... if i directed it.
