Shadow of the Colossus Hits The Big Screen

A big screen adaptation of Team ICO's PlayStation 2 game has gotten underway at Sony Pictures.

Regardless of whether or not film adaptations of videogames ever turn out good, some seem like obvious choices and some don't. 50 Cent [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88942-Gears-of-War-Movie-A-Harder-Lord-of-the-Rings] is doing it. Shadow of the Colossus? No, absolutely not. Nevertheless, producer Kevin Mishner over at Sony Pictures is determined to turn Team ICO's minimalistic tale of love, loss and killing gigantic creatures into a big screen bonanza.

Attached to pen the screenplay is Justin Marks, who worked on Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li as well as the upcoming 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake currently underway at Disney.

No offense to Marks or his work, but anyone who's played Shadow of the Colossus knows it'll take a lot to turn it into a Hollywood-style narrative. Because while Shadow of the Colossus has one of the most powerful stories I've yet experienced in a videogame, the narrative isn't exactly flush with action. Most of what happens occurs before the game even really begins and then at the very end. Everything else in between is just killing colossi and being sad while riding around on your horse, by yourself. On top of that, the story has a far from fairy tale conclusion.

So don't be surprised to hear that they're planning on making some changes to the plot. According to The Cut Scene [http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2009/04/shadow-of-the-colossus-movie-in-development.html]'s Ben Fritz, who's an acquaintance of Marks, the movie might involve bringing minor characters from the game (like the tribal leader trying to stop the main character) into bigger roles, and will be going for what Fritz calls a "Lord of the Rings-style fantasy tentpole."

I just hope they get a really good horse to play Agro, because that thing is going to be seriously overworked.

There are some games that shouldn't be touched by Hollywood. This is one of them.

Couldn't they just re-make the game in 1080p or something?

Will be bastardised, will bomb, people will tell I told you so.

Again, Indigo_Dingo's opinion, but I do think he has somewhat of a point.

Still......it'll most likely suck as all video game movies do.

I'd like to share my opinion on the matter. Now, this seems really different situation to me than any other game-movie transfer (except Hitman. I never did really decide whether that was good or not). For one thing, Sony have never before interfered with Team Ico's work, even when both have been commercial flops. Does that indicate anything to you? Also, Shadow of the Collosus is like the opposite of most properties that get chosen for this - its brilliantly written and yet almost deliberately obscure, it lacks simple characters, and will probably be hell to do. If they were looking for a quick buck with a cheap action movie, they would have made Twisted Metal, probably with Mark Hammil voicing Sweet Tooth, and just thrown together 2 hours of vehicular carnage.

This doesn't display any hints of a money grab, and it looks like everyone is aware of this. So is it possible that maybe, just maybe, they're trying to make a good videogame movie, and have gone with the best work? You know, like someone tried to do with Watchmen (and failed pretty badly in my opinion, but it was still a valiant try)?

This is the gaming equivalent of making a movie of Watchmen.

Go fuck yourself Hollywood. Some things really don't work as movies.

As someone who hasn't played the game yet, I could see it working.

Hero guy on horse slaying gigantic demons of doom? Add a MacGuffin here, a few characters there and an intriguing story in between, and you have a movie!

Mind you, I have no idea what the game is about.

This movie would be good if Uwe Boll made it. I mean, he's the only talented filmmaker in existence these days.

As awesome as the game was, there's no way it can work on the screen. The game was a singular experience, no one besides your character, the dark voices in the temple and your horse for company as you go about killing titans... Hollywood can't have that, Hollywood needs other characters to talk to and cut-aways to other characters to keep it interesting. If they keep it true to the game, you'd have just as much fun (if not more) just watching someone play the game... if they adapt it (as they will), it'll come out more like the "Silent Hill" movie.

Look, I know you don't know what you just said, but just get out. Now. No no, don't worry about getting your things, we'll handle that. You just really need to leave right now.

I hear that the game was pretty good; I've been looking for a copy of the game forever.

I'm just saying that from first impressions, it seems very possible to make a movie based on a guy fighting some bigger guys.

At this point, I'm required to ask...why are we butchering games for a few bucks to throw down at the movie theatres?

How about The Rock as the main protagonist?
He's experienced with game-based movies, after all.
