Bionic Woman Writer to Adapt Ghost in the Shell For Big Screen

The seminal manga/anime Ghost in the Shell is getting a live-action, English-language remake courtesy of Bionic Woman writer Laeta Kalogridis.

Laeta Kalogridis, who penned the cancelled remake of the Bionic Woman, has been handed the scriptwriting reins for the live action version of Ghost in the Shell, the rights to which are currently owned by Dreamworks.

Along with Kalogridis, Avi and Ari Arad, who were the executive producers of Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and Iron Man, have signed on to produce the movie, which will be in 3D. It's not clear yet which version of Ghost in the Shell is getting adapted, but my money is on Mamoru Oshii's 1995 movie rather than Masamune Shirow's original manga.

Of course, the real fun part is trying to guess who they are going to cast in the various roles. Maybe if we all wish really hard, we won't get another DragonBall Evolution.

They'll probably have Americans play the entirely Japanese cast.

Edit: Charlize Theron will most likely play Motoko Kusanagi.

wait... didn't that Bionic Woman series suck? >.>
I heard only bad things about it.
Oh, I hope they don't butcher it. I watched the first movie, and it was... odd, but in it's own way, good.
chances are, it'll get butchered.

Oh God.... Please anything but that pile of garbage. Maybe, they'll put their creative team to work for a change. Hopefully, someone'll clue them in that screwing over a "classic" is blasphemy.

Bionic Woman sucked ass. I think this is certainly going to join the ranks of DB: Evolution as Things That Should Never Have Been.

I always liked the plot material for Ghost in the Shell, the whole "Border between Man and Machine" debate. And in the defense of the idea of a Live Action Ghost in the Shell: That's a pretty realistic anime to start with, unlike the Dragonball series where they really had to stretch to make it work for a live action movie.

I would dearly love for this to be a success, mainly because its one of my all time favourite animes, but I don't have high hopes, its kinda hard and the actor choices will the shit, just because they always are

anime into live action? Who thought of this shit? This is worse of an idea than making video games into movies! I'll let moviebob tell me wether it's good or not if/when it come out......

They're really setting themselves up for failure. If not at the box office (although I kind of expect that too) then at least artistically. I'm not saying the original was a work of genius or anything (it's gratuitous in a pointless fashion, and the pacing isn't all that great), but I don't see why that movie needs a remake. And ESPECIALLY not one made by the people who made Fantastic Four!

The last time Charlize Theron was cast as in a movie based on an animated series, it sucked major balls. Aeon Flux was a bad idea to be remade, this will be a bad idea. Are studios really that made of money they feel the need to waste it on overbudgeted stuff they know wont translate well and will only alienate fanbases? Frankly if there is one franchise that they could throw money at, it would be Duke Nukem. That kind of story would be so full of cheese anyway, it would be hard NOT to like it. Of course it would never be finished, it's the curse that DN has....

Why...?

Why do people feel the need to turn perfectly good Anime into a live-action adaptation?
How is that an improvement? I mean, especially when the end result tends to be pure shit.
(Ahem. Dragonball, Death Note...)

And American adaptations in particular...
Why? Is the "It's animated, therefore it must be for kids" idea so deeply ingrained that this is the only thing you can come up with to show people some of these stories are actually worth seeing sometimes?

A) Anime rarely ports over to live action well (even the japanese can't get it right, as proven with BOTH Deathnote films), and
B) It's Hollywood, good luck of not having it turn into DB:E

I guess Kusanagi being naked throughout most of the film will be out then.... Probably an improvement since it made that film embarrasing to watch despite its quality.
