Oh for-

First Akira, now this? Hollywood needs to stop raping my child/adulthood, they really do. Let's hope this turns out acceptable, but I'm sceptical and for good reason.

NOOOOOO!!!

We already have an american version of ghost in the shell, it's called THE MATRIX
I'm surprised no one else has noticed this. They'll go ahead and remake GiTS, and then everyone will hate on it for being a Matrix ripoff, despite the fact that many of the iconic aspects of the Matrix were in fact facelifted straight from Ghost in the SHell (the scrolling green numbers, 'plugging in', cyber-terrorism, man and machine, visual styles and themes.)
The fact of the matter is that there are so many barriers to be overcome for this to be a success. Anyone who's watched any of the GiTS franchise knows that it's actually quite difficult to get into for people who have not had much exposure to mature animated films and/or the Japanese culture. The milieu of Ghost in the Shell was so radically different from those of Western films. A live action remake tends to bring out those differences in the most awkward way possible (ie. Dragonball Evolution). Or the filmmakers can avoid this by totally westernizing the film, at which point it isn't Ghost in the SHell anymore, it's just a worse film with the same names tacked on.

But ultimately, our gripes don't matter. As long as there is money to be made from it, it will be made. They made money off that god-awful Dragonball movie, didn't they? They've got all the incentive they need.

I always liked the plot material for Ghost in the Shell, the whole "Border between Man and Machine" debate. And in the defense of the idea of a Live Action Ghost in the Shell: That's a pretty realistic anime to start with, unlike the Dragonball series where they really had to stretch to make it work for a live action movie.
This is a good point I wonder how they'll handle that debate though cause it cold be really rather good or be a bit hollywood on us where it turns out it doesn't really matter if your man or machine and we're all just "human" or something like that
Too true. One of the nice things about Ghost in the Shell is that it doesn't actually answer the question it poses, it just shows you a world where it's an interesting question to consider. If a Hollywood adaptation tries to answer the question, then it'll probably come-off as too preachy. :/

It seems someone's never read Neuromancer. Shame on you.

Speaking of the granddaddy of cyberpunk, I'd bet good money on a Hollywood GitS movie turning out better than the version of Neuromancer in production now: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1037220/

I've read Neuromancer. The difference is that Neuromancer is a book, and one written in English at that. Books to movies are generally not as poor as movies to more movies, and that's because you're moving from a more interpretive medium to one less so with book-movies. Cross-culture remakes of foreign films generally turn out badly from a critic's standpoint, especially given this one's particular situation. GiTS is characteristically Japanese, so there's much more to be lost in translation.
Though I'd prefer that Neuromancer remain as only a book as well. Certain elements of it wouldn't quite jibe with the silver screen :)

I spent five minutes laughing at the whole 'Bionic Woman' irony, before I realized they will be butchering the Major. I don't care if the movie is good cinema, if they ruin that character i'll go apeshit.

The Ultrajoe hearts the The Major. I have no regrets.

They'll probably have Americans play the entirely Japanese cast.

Edit: Charlize Theron will most likely play Motoko Kusanagi.
Or Mila Jovovich, either way I'll be disappointed.

Compared to other anime-live action adaptations, I could see this working better.
That doesn't mean it'll work WELL.
At worst we'll probably end up with something on the level of Aeon Flux or Ultraviolet, a passable action film with a female lead but is otherwise ultimately forgettable.

Laeta Kalogridis does have some other interesting writing credits to her name though, although many are screenplays. Shutter Island, which is the latest Martin Scorsese film. Night Watch, which is a pretty awesome flick. I enjoyed it. And another manga/anime adaption in 2011 called Battle Angel which is begin directed by James Cameron. Seems like she is being selected in at least some degree for her ability to adapt other mediums to screenplays and an above average level subject of knowledge in female cyborg/androids.

The Executive Producers listing is basically a wash. They are not involved in the technical process of making film. One Spiderman film was good, one was great and one was terrible. Iron Man was great, but Fantastic Four was abysmal. But at the end of the day these people didn't have all that much to do with the films quality.

As I said earlier at worst we end up with a striped down action film, the subject matter is largely pretty easy to localize - so I expect them to at least be able to deliver on female android shoots things and people. But it's still kind of early to tell.

There are so many ways this could end up so wrong, as a huge fan of the series i hope that they do it justice but odds are they won't.

Dimes to dollars she won't have her trademark purple hair but will instead go for something more realistic with some purple dyed streaks. Which isn't bad, if you can pull it off. Question is will it work.

They will screw this up, and on top of that will it be based off one of the three anime movies or the series?

This movie was already made. It's called The Matrix. Watch Ghost in the Shell and then The Matrix, and you'll see concepts and exact scenes used from Ghost in the Shell. The Wachowski brothers admitted their film was heavily influenced by Ghost in the Shell, but they basically ripped it right off and added a layer of "human batteries living in a virtual world" to the script.

Well for me this will be a watch with no expectations kind of film. I think as long as I dont hold it to the source material in any way, it has a chance. I cant say that this will the kill the series for me, I love the series SAC1 and 2 I watch atleast one of them every month.

But I will say that its really hard not to have any hopes for this.

So that's cowboy bebop and Ghost in the Shell ruined on the big screen... Paranoia agent next or Trigun you think?
cowboy bebop? when? and trigun would be sweet
Cowboy bebop is in the works right now with Keanu Reeves playing Spike. Trigun live action would be horrible.
