Compared to other anime-live action adaptations, I could see this working better.
That doesn't mean it'll work WELL.

Oh why do you even need to remake this as live action its not going to bring anything to the franchise.
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. I don't get the fascination of bringing already seminal animation hits into live action films. Especially anime. It is it's own art-form. Why would anyone re-make Akira or make Bambi live action?

Making Death Note live action did absolutley nothing to add to it's franchise.

The up-coming Cowboy Bebop live action film is just not going to work either I promise you.

I'm a bit of a fan of GitS, both the comic, the animated movie, and the animated series, but I'm pretty pessimistic about a live-action version. I guess it's a "hope for the best, expect the worst" situation for me.

Live action might not add anything good to the franchise, but live action movies appeal to a far broader audience than animated movies. If they were to make a new GitS animated movie, it would mostly be the fans that would watch it, and not many others. A live action movie, if done right, has the potential of drawing in the regular movie crowd as well as the long-time fans.

I don't understand all the negativity here, I'm looking forward to it.
The negativity here exists because live action adaptation of anime doesn't work, period, you end up making a steaming pile. Even the Japanese can't make it work, and we Americans somehow do it worse.

It might have something to do with how a studio exec will take one look at the source material, decide it's too complex for American audiences and demand it be a brain dead action movie where everyone is a super cyborg.

I sometimes suspect this is only done for the financial gain. Something like Lord of the Rings being made live action after the animated series makes sense because it is not based off that version. It comes from a book.

a live action Ghost in the Shell would be better than most I agree. Because of the nature of the subject. But history has shown most conversions end in failure, Game to movie conversions for example.

My fail-radar is making loud noises on this one. Chances of doing this well is not too high from where I'm standing...

Every time, without exception, A non-Japanese company (and about half the time when it is a Japanese company) tries to make a live anime adaptation, they fail miserably. This will be no exception.

My theory being anything made for release in theaters is always changed to "appeal to a wider audience". The same reason horror movies get toned down now a days to get a PG-13 rating. In this case the movie will be changed so that they hope non-anime fans will go see it. Which is some silly logic because people who aren't fans of the anime, most likely wont want to see a movie based on said anime. And fans of the anime will be repulsed by the changes made and not want to see it either. So it would be better just to get the animation studio to make an animated move directed at the fans.

But the again maybe anime just isn't compatible with live action, no matter who makes it.
I'd agree with this except there could be a total opposite on audience appeal. As in make it rated R and the trailers are all actions and crappy one-liners. And giant robots that were made up by the company, can't forget about giant robots. The hype will be so bad because everyone will think the opening seen is with the Motoko Kusanagi jumping off a skyscraper naked. Then people either won't get it or the story will having nothing to do with anything from the series.
Er, well if I understand what you're saying correctly you don't really disagree with what I meant (or was trying to mean at least). The jist of what I was trying to say is that they will change it in some way to try and attract more people, but it will backfire and end up attracting less people.

I can't even joke about this. I love the franchise too much.

Granted if given a big enough budget, the right backing and the right cast, GitS could make a brilliant movie adaptation from any of the films or the series, but I think we all know it's not going to get any of those things and will be awful.

I'm going to pretend I never read this and go on with what was a good day.

I'm a huge fan of Ghost in the Shell, and I really hope that this movie turns out alright. Of course past experiences have shown that anime/magna movies that get adapted for Hollywood movies, usually sucks beyond suck. So my expectations are not that high. I mean they can't do worse than that abortions Dragon Ball Evolution. And if they do, do worse than Dragon Ball Evolution, you might wanna build a bomb shelter because its a sign of the apocalypse.

I never saw Ghost in the Shell, but I'm going to because everyone says its really good. I don't think its a good version to make a live action movie out of it for several reasons though.

First of all, both live-action film and anime (or animation in general) are both visual mediums. Unlike say, book to movie adaptions, there is not much leeway in creative innovation, nor can the people adapting the story keep true to ts source material while making it something unique as well. These kind of adaptions don't work also because many things that anime can get away with won't cut it in live-action because it will look ridiculous without milllions of dollars for development and a crack team of special effects wizards to integrate these outlandish concepts (like magic) so it looks organic and natural in the fabric of reality we see everyday. That's why video game and comics almost never produce good movie adaptions.

Then there are the fans, who will screw the whole thing up (see Spiderman 3, that is, unless a fan directs the movie (see Zack Snyder directing that trainwreck Watchmen). No matter, what the movie is, the fans will almost certainly find something to complain about, like Christian Bale's raspy voice in Batman ( which was necessary so people wouldn't recognize his voice).

Third of all, its unnecessary. Why produce a movie out of something when there's already an animated movie. It stinks of blatant commercialism, and poisons the the things we love. And God forbid if something like this gets pushed into production because a famous actor holds affection for it. Which is why Cowboy Bebop will Keanu Reeves as Spike, and why all fond memories of that anime will be ruined.

The seminal manga/anime Ghost in the Shell is getting a live-action, English-language remake courtesy of Bionic Woman writer Laeta Kalogridis.
There is no possible way this can fail.
