New DC Comics Dream Team Paves Way for More Watchmen

DC Comics just revealed its new publishing team, including one member that could have a strong desire to tell more Watchmen stories.

previously rumored [http://www.amazon.com/Harry-Potter-Paperback-Box-Books/dp/0545162076/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1279562475&sr=1-3]. DC announced today that the people, not person, taking current publisher Paul Levitz's place when he steps down from the position will be a group of five men, one of which that is itching to develop more in the Watchmen universe.

Jim Lee and Dan DiDio will serve as co-publishers of DC Comics, Geoff Johns will take on the role of Chief Creative Officer, and John Rood and Patrick Caldon will be Executive Partners. The publisher role is apparently going to be split between all five, rather than one single person taking the position. The simple fact that a group is being appointed is creating talk that big stuff is in store for DC.

As for who these guys are, Jim Lee is one of the most well-known artists in the comic book industry. Dan DiDio was the executive editor of DC Comics and has now had his status elevated at the company. Geoff Johns is a writer that has touched countless comic book properties, most recently including DC's major ongoing Blackest Night storyline that saw a whole host of different colored ring-bearing Lanterns other than the usual green hitting the scene. John Rood is a self-described "suit" that it looks like will be handing more behind-the-scenes duties, as will Patrick Caldon.

The big name that matters here in regards to Watchmen is Dan DiDio. Paul Levitz had previously put the kibosh on any new Watchmen projects, but with him stepping down DiDio reportedly [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98026-Watchmen-2-Could-Be-in-the-Cards] has a desire to impress some DC higher-ups with more from the jolly crew of Rorschach, The Comedian, Nite-Owl, Dr. Manhattan, and the rest. One thing we know probably isn't happening is a movie sequel to Watchmen, which has pretty much already been ruled out for the current time. However, Dan DiDio is still is likely to put new Watchmen comics into production, so we could be hearing more about that sometime in the future.

With Jim Lee involved at the very top, I hope we see a LOT more with the Wildstorm universe personally.

Whatever it takes, get Warren Ellis back on "The Authority" even if they have to kidnap him, sever his legs, and force him to type at gunpoint.

Wait...Geoff Johns and Jim Lee? No, it doesn't even matter. As if they have the audacity to try and turn this into a long running franchise. Alan Moore must be spinning in an LSD induced fit of confusion.

Fuck you DiDio...[small]fuck you in the ear[/small]

EDIT: And while I like Blackest Night, after Infinite Crisis Geoff Johns needs to seriously stop touching anything with more than one type of sueperhero in it.

well... fine... let him make more watchmen, but i have one question first. who watches the watchmen?! what if he screws it all up?! just one missed detail and that could ruin it forever. besides, people dont seem to want watchmen, they want... whatever the DC universe wants.

Combat knife? Check...
AK-47? Check...
C4 with detonators? Check...
RPG-7? Check...

Okay, I'm sorry I have to do this, but it is for the greater good. Think of me as Dr. Manhattan and Dan DiDio as Rorsarch.

His other arm is obscured by the comic and his right arm.

Of all the times I thought I'd see that meme be used, on the face of Alan Moore...

Whilst I can understand why they would want to make a sequel to Watchmen (*cough*popularity*cough*money*cough*), I don't think he realises that noone who isn't a worker for DC Comics wants a sequel to Watchmen. I'm not even sure how you could fit a sequel in when you consider how the original ended; it's too much of a complicated ending for a sequel to be possible, even with the New Frontiersman scene at the end, I can't understand how you could make a plot for a sequel work, let alone make it anywhere near as good or well-acclaimed as the original. This is a case where letting the sleeping dogs lie is the way to go.

Saying that, annoyingly there is almost nothing stopping DC at this point. Alan Moore doesn't hold much of the rights to the series anyway and split with DC two decades ago, and Dave Gibbons holds little, if any, rights to the novel and its characters anymore.

It's times like this when we need a protest, a petition, a Facebook group, anything to stop this madness of corporate sell-out from happening, come on!

EDIT: I would also like to point out that, as someone who spent about nine months on this site with variations of a picture of Rorschach as an avatar, I am disappointed.

He plans to sell out Watchmen, one of the most famous comics ever? Nerds everywhere will be pissed.
