Rumor: BioShock MMO in the Works

Will the world of Rapture be going massively-multiplayer?

The first two Bioshock games established the franchise as a shooter, but anonymous sources have told Destructoid [http://www.destructoid.com/rumor-bioshock-mmo-in-the-works-170984.phtml] that 2K Games might releases a BioShock MMO.

There aren't any details beyond that, which isn't that unusual given that it's just a rumor, but BioShock's undersea setting certainly has plenty of character, the splicers have roles that could be made into classes and have been shown to have factions that the players might join, so there is scope, at least, for an MMO.

2K has expressed an interest in a BioShock MMO in the past, but whether or not it ever gets made remains to be seen. Even the idea of it is likely to be incredibly divisive however, just as it was with BioShock 2.

Just because a game isn't an MMO doesn't mean it's an RPG. I think it was the developers of APB who were also keen to make such a distinction. MMO just means 'massively multiplayer online' - the RPG suffix is just assumed thanks to people's mental association with WoW et al. It would be vaguely feasible to base a Bioshock MMO on the existing gameplay styles.

NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOO

I'm sorry but i don't think that there is a possible way that this could be made into an MMO. Bioshock is about narrative (mostly) not about "pwning the n00bs"

Seriously? How can you turn this into a MMO? It's one ~dead~ city, there's no possibility for MMO in there.

There was a period in the game universe when it wasn't a dead city. A Rapture-set MMO sounds pretty cool to me.

No, it's not the right setting for an MMO - what would you do? Team up with the intent of killing... what? There's no setting for an overly elaborate dungeon grind and eventual 1000ft tall boss.

Patch BioShock 1 and 2 so we can do Co-Op, that would be a lot of fun but I am a stickler for co-op games.

We all know how trustworthy rumours are!

...I think I've said this far to many times but; I highly doubt it.

Yeah there is. I mean similar to what they did for Bioshock 2. Set it during the fall of Rapture (or just before and leading into) and the whole Civil War. Factions could be Ryan's forces, Atlas' forces, General Crooks, Big Daddy/Little Sister combos and Lamb's Followers.

I for one think it could be interesting and am going to see how it works out.

I think that it's a little ironic that we're discouraging the expansion of a series based around a fictional city set entirely on capitalistic principles...anyone else?

err, i wouldn't pin the association on WoW and WoW alone... I would pin it more on the fact that just about every MMO happens to also be a RPG. But yes, MMO does not equal RPG.

Well I love Bioshock and Bioshock 2 as much as the next guy and there is defenetly a possability for MMO settings during Raptures' early years. But then again I've never played an MMO before and again Bioshock was great with its story and shooting. Just as long as there is no FUCKING MONHTLY FEE LIKE THAT ELECTRONIC SMACK ADDICTION WOW then I may consider it. Just as long as the game starts at the discovery of ADAM or the distrabution of plasmids, that will be fine. By the way if have to choose a faction or guild or whatever, LONG LIVE ANDREW RYAN!!! ( at least until 1960)
