Yup tell them to surprise you with what they fell is a good gift. Telling them what to give you kinda ruins the whole thing
For my 18th, my parents basically said that they would only get me what I wanted, which is basically taking away all surprise. It was really bad, cos I had no money, so I just got them to get me books for work...

My advice is just to maybe give them a general area of stuff to get you, like books, games etc. Unless you're happy to know exactly what they will get you, maybe that could be a nice compromise?

You beat me to it!

To OP, maybe ask them to take you on a trip somewhere you've always wanted to go, or even just somewhere that means something to you. Have a nice day with your family and make some memories. Maybe go to a strip club. :)
Was that my first ninja move on the Escapist?!

Also, that is a very good suggestion.

That may be an idea. I have an Ex-USAF engineer for a cousin so I'll see if I can get onto the base for my first 'legal' drink with my family or something.

And I'm English, so American stuff may not be the best idea.

I'd say go for it. If your family are drinkers like mine are, I think it's a good idea. For my 21st (legal drinking age in US) instead of going out and getting drunk with friends (like most people do on their 21st) I had a few beers and shots with my dad at home. I wouldn't have had it any other way.

How bout a Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank

Holds 4 - Commander, gunner, loader, driver, top speed 59km/h(depending on the surface)
Has built in Optical Encoders, Scanners and Accelerometers and of course in case you are cut-off by another road user you can always tell him how you feel with your 1 x 120mm, model L30 gun, 1 x 7.62 mm chain gun, or even 1 x 7.62mm, model L37A2 anti-aircraft gun

I'm quite sure you will never forget that present.

Or how bout a nice watch, i got one when i was 16 and thats was quite a nice present.

All I asked my dad for my 18th was a laptop, and he's not gonna get me the one I want. But my mum's sending me a load of money to do whatever the fuck I want with :D

Just ask for money. Or a pet, or a cactus or something crazy.
Or something that you can look back on in 5 - 10 years and be like, I got that for my 18th ^.^

If parents truly understood their newly 18 year old children they'd hand over a fistful of cash and tell them to spend the day with their significant others but be home before 1am or not at all.

EDIT: before 1am or sometime the next day. I just realized how mean that could be interpreted.

I got my car fixed for my 18th birthday... and almost died again, like on my 16th... I would go with money and just buy whatever or save it...

Uh...

I got like 50 bucks and some guitar strings.

Live it up.

Emotional value is such a vague description...You could have anything.

Something of emotional value as oppossed to material value.
Their going to buy you a book.

Sorry, man.
or this if your not.
NOOOOOO!!!!

I'm male.

I should have said to those above. When I said Emotional as oppossed to Material, I didnt mean something free, I just meant something that I'll be able to look back on in those distant and 'scary' years and think back to the time I was 18 and free as a bird.

These are all great idea's guys (and girls) but the reason they asked is because my parents are... money conscious and dont want to buy me something that I wont like. Bit of an odd view but I hope you can appreciate it.

BTW, whats a Shizzy Ring?
If the only reason they will not buy something is because they are nervous of buying something you will dislike. You and your parents need to sit and get to know each other better. :p

Seriously though if such is the case I personally always ask for money when this question is brought up. My reasoning is if you are going to buy something for me, money is your safe bet because it guarantees I can use it towards something I actually want. Frankly I prefer people did not buy me anything if they cannot simply put cash in a card. Why? Because I have expensive tastes and do not believe beyond my mother (who likes and will buy what I like) people need to bother. I would rather they give me nothing than buy me something I will never wear or use, thus having completely wasted their money.

... or if they insist, at least go to a well known store so I can exchange it for store credit. Yeah I do that with almost every gift I get that is not cash.

Anyhow if you can swing a laptop as a practical purchase, go for it. Otherwise hmm, that is a hard call.

I dont celebrate my birthday, and my parents and family members gave up on trying to get me anything years ago, its gotten to the point that noone, not even my mam remembers or knows my birth date. Its funny, it was my last year in college this year and my group of friends suddenly realised that I never had a birthday in college, so they made me do something this year for my 22nd, seeing as they missed the 21st. So we went on a hike together, and camped out, drank by the campfire, went kayaking and absailing, just a fun adventure weekend, and on the last day we climbed a mountain in Wicklow, I think it was Lug na Coile but I'm not sure, any way, it was such a savage weekend and I'll always look back on it, it didnt cost us much at all, petrol and drink money and food really. All the equipment we scrounged off mates we know or the college has a lot of gear....why not do something like that, its a great memory, and we have loadsa pics, do it with your family or friends, we all smoked cigars at the summit, was really nice.

A uranium ring, well that's what I'd give to someone who'd lived off my money and job for the last 18 years.

Don't have kids, please.

Errr, what, a watch? A nice, art-deco engraved watch would be nice, I guess.

Guess what I'm getting on my 18th birthday? A rent notice. xD YAYYYY, my parents are such lovely people.

It makes me facepalm, because my friends parts promised them cars when they finish there GCSEs (16) and I'll be getting grilled for getting B's, probably.
