Pick Your Pack With a Fallout: New Vegas Pre-Order

Bethesda Softworks has unveiled four separate Fallout: New Vegas [http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/home/teaser.php] pre-order bonus packs available from four separate retailers, which means that you, dear reader, have some decisions to make.

The pre-order is a well-established ritual among gamers. You pop into your favorite retailer, lay down your five bucks and in a few weeks (or a few months) you get a phone call telling you that your very own copy of the new hotness has arrived and is waiting to be picked up. To encourage patronage, some retailers would occasionally team up with publishers to offer pre-order bonuses ranging from crap like "spy listening devices" to unique in-game items, which has inevitably evolved into a practice of offering different bonuses through different retailers.

So it is that we now have four - yes, four - Fallout: New Vegas bonus packs available to gamers who pre-order from specific sellers: The Classic, Tribal, Caravan and Mercenary packs, each comprising a special combination of weapon, armor and miscellaneous items.

From GameStop [http://www.gamestop.com/gs/landing/fnv/]: The Classic Pack, my personal favorite, featuring an armored Vault 13 suit, a Vault 13 canteen, a weathered 10mm pistol with some added punch and five stimpacks.

From Amazon [http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=fallout%3A+new+vegas&x=0&y=0]: The Tribal Pack, which includes tribal raiding armor, a high-damage broad machete, five doses of "bleak venom," whatever that is, and ten throwing spears.

From Steam [http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=0&ic=48_0&search_query=fallout%3A+new+vegas&Find.x=0&Find.y=0&Find=Find]: The Caravan Pack, a practical collection that comes with lightweight leather armor, a "sturdy caravan shotgun," four repair kits and a handy-dandy set of binoculars.

From Best Buy [http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=AAE935AFB54E992F7851DC5E91CD1CC2.bbolsp-app05-21?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_dynSessConf=8652636541962513197&id=pcat17071&type=page&st=fallout%3A+new+vegas&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=15&sp=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960]: The Mercenary Pack, with lightweight metal armor, a fast-loading mercenary grenade rifle, three "super stimpacks" and three doctors' bags.

I love pre-order bonuses - I have a treasured collection of the stuff - but I don't care for this retailer-specific business. First, because it's a violation of my hyper-anal completionist tendencies, and second, because I (and I would imagine a lot of other gamers) don't really have a choice. I like the Classic Pack but is it worth a two-hour drive to get it? I don't think so. Looks like it's Walmart, and the admittedly not-a-bad-second-choice Road Warrior chic Caravan collection, for me.

Fallout: New Vegas is scheduled to come out in October 2010 for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

What about those not in the USA? What do we get? I'm ordering mine from GAME, not flying over the sea.
There's dragons in that sea.

I will be buying the Steam version. Its the only one I like and probably the most practical considering the said dragon infested sea.

Can't we just get one standard edition instead of all this useless pre-order crap?

Or get the PC version and console command/mod them all back in...
This comment is win.
Although I'll probably get it from Steam just to have it on Steam.

It'll be the Amazon pack for me. Now necessarily because I prefer, but because I can't really buy through any other store [apart from Steam, but I want it on 360].

Wait...are these real -wearable- armor costumes or in game armor? If the former I'd spring for the Vault 13 suit in a flash! Course, doubt that's the case xD

Personally I've always preferred Steam's version of a pre-order (for any game, not just their own): pre-order the game for cheaper than when it's released, and get another game from that developer or publisher free.

This whole "pre-order and get a free gun" thing makes me uneasy.

Hmmm, well I pre-ordered from Amazon due to the fact that I had a $20 gift card. Sadly I'm not too sure how great those items would be. I like The Wal*Mart-Steam and Best Buy packs the best personally.... oh well, a bonus is a bonus.

As much as I like the idea of the "classic" pack, I'm not sure if it fits in with the whole courier theme of the game.

As far as having them all goes... well I'd imagine that if you get handed all this stuff when you recover in the doctor's office (it's what you have on you), having like four suits of armor on you would be a bit more encumberance than your poor newbie would want to endure during the crucial initial scavenging segements of the game. :)

As nice as the "Red Dead Redemption" bit was, with the oppertunity to get all the add ons (I didn't, but it was a nice idea), it defeats the purpose of the pre-order bonuses. The idea being that the retailers are buying these packs to convince people to order from them, as opposed to the competitor. Going "Omg, I love the classic pack, I'm going to buy from Gamestop instead of the other guys" is exactly the point.

With the PC version these might be modded in, BUT one also has to consider that they might take actions to prevent this (due to the retailers sponsoring it), and that doesn't help the guys buying the game for their console... I'm getting it for the PC (I might get a second copy for the console later if I wind up loving the game as much as FO3, and want a copy to travel).

If only I knew this before I preordered it months ago... Or if any of those other options were available to me. Now I'm stuck with the classic pack, while the others sound much more awesome.

Those hardly sound like pre-order bonuses. How much of that will I be able to pick up in the vanilla version of the game?

The tribal pack is cool...because it's just cool, and the Mercenary pack is awesome because it has a grenade rifle

Classic is what I am going to get though, because I have tons of Gamestop credit.

This really is crap, nobody should have to make a stupid choice like this.

Wonder what EU version will be...I'd imagine same retailers as for Red Dead.

Cool concept though.
