Trailer: Sakaguchi's Last Story a Wii RPG To Anticipate

Hironobu Sakaguchi's The Last Story could be a sorely needed positive addition to the Wii's RPG library.

Nintendo and Sakaguchi has said [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-Anthology-Playstation/dp/B00002R28C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278712643&sr=8-2] is not a Final Fantasy rehash despite the very similar name. Now that Last Story's first gameplay trailer has been released, I think we can see he was telling the truth.

I don't know about everybody else, but after seeing this trailer I'm pretty excited to see more. I don't know too much about the game's premise, as most of the information released has been from Sakaguchi's Japanese development blog, but Last Story appears to focus on a group of characters with varying armaments that are shown in an opening encounter with a Final Fantasy-like faceless, spiky monster. They aren't prominently detailed in this first look, but at least one of them has an eyepatch.

While there may be similarities between Last Story and Final Fantasy's monsters, the combat system looks much more action oriented than the combat systems of Final Fantasies past. Players use cover, leaning to the side to soften up enemies with a crossbow before leaping out and executing a brutal slash. Other combat abilities shown are aerial maneuvers and massive area-of-effect attacks. It also looks like there is an evasion system that allows characters to backflip over debris while moving away from enemies.

Sakaguchi may have ripped off Assassin's Creed's bumping-into-pedestrians engine, but that's fine if they can fit into a Wii game. I also see some ships that I'm feeling could potentially take to the skies. And it just wouldn't be a JRPG without a woman humming a heartfelt song while a meteor shower brightens the night sky, now would it? This is an intriguing first look at the upcoming Wii RPG, which has only been announced for Japan so far, but it certainly has the potential to make it to other regions too.

Damn this game looks awesome. Hopefully the creator of Final Fantasy can show the hacks who thought-up FFXIII how its done.

Also, for the first time in my entire life: FIRST!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

I'm waiting until they announce the ability to ride a giant yellow bird called a Chucubu before I consider getting this.

Watchit, them mods are like RoboCop!

As for the game; aye, I'll give it a bash. JRPGs are sorta like my secret video game love. I've just gotta get through all these Tales of... and Fire Emblem titles first!

Finally, a decent looking RPG for the Wii. And its made by the Final Fantasy creators. AND it has eyepatches. I am excited.

I like to think Sakaguchi had a word with the marketing department to make sure the trailer accentuated the presence of towns in the game, just as a snide response to FF13.

The fighting kind of reminded me of Vagrant Story. Except for the crossbow. Then again, my memory of VagrantStory is vague as well. But I was reminded!

While the trailer does look impressive, is anyone else getting a Gears of War vibe from what they showed of the cover system? I'm not saying that's a bad thing, it's just that specific style of mechanic seems a bit odd in an RPG.

aw... I was really hoping for something with brighter color palette than this. This just feels like... I don't know, an amalgamation of a lot of other successful ideas. Looks really good for the Wii though I'll give it that though.

The "Cover system" looks to be more aboot stealth than blocking attacks as evidenced by the big monster not bothering to attack while the guy is hiding at 1:05. The monster even has a ? over it's head Metal Gear style.

Me: "I'm not getting this. I have enough RPGs, and if I feel like playing a new one, I'll just borrow FF XIII. I just watch this trailer and-"
*guy shoots crossbow from around cover then rolls directly into the middle of the fight*
Me: "HOLY FUCK I WANT THIS NOA!"

That looked pretty solid. Hopefully it makes it way to the great frozen north and I can give it a spin some day. Gameplay is much faster then what I'm used to seeing in JRPGs even the Tales of series.
