Battle system of The Last Story looks pretty decent... even a little bit reminiscent of Mass Effect's combat with the cover-and-aim system. However, the character animations and overall design is a little lacking compared to Xenoblade, and both games are variant types of action RPGs. Hopefully we see both titles rather than speculate which one will be better. And hopefully we DO see them, and don't just "see" them floating around on the other side of the pond.

Very interesting...but the article was a little vague on one point.

"Nintendo and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi are teaming up to create Wii RPG The Last Story."

Is this a Square-Nintendo game, like Mario RPG, or is this a Wii exclusive Square game? Sorry, but the wording isn't quite clear.

Anyway, this is looking like it will make my ever-expanding list of Wii games to pick up.

Looks like the best graphics on the Wii, to be honest i was semi interested until i saw the playable characters.

For me it's nice to see a good looking JRPG with a real-time combat system, regardless of what system it's on. There are very few games with a turn-based system that i actually like. Getting it on the Wii is a bonus as i do try to stand up for that little system that shits money ^_^

Also, i would really like to see Xenoblade if it ever crosses the ocean. Looks like a fun game.

They are definitely on par with Monster Hunter Tri which Nintendo said had the best graphics on the Wii. Amazing how much detail can be put in if the devs are actually trying.

This will definitely be on my must buy list should it come to North America.

The "Cover system" looks to be more aboot stealth than blocking attacks as evidenced by the big monster not bothering to attack while the guy is hiding at 1:05. The monster even has a ? over it's head Metal Gear style.
Maybe both? Let's call it Metal Gears of War style.

It does look interesting, shame I don't have a wii. Do they have a real creativity crisis in Japan? Final Fantasy, Last Story. Means the same thing. When is he releasing Ultimate Anecdote? Even the logo at the end looks like every FF logo since they started.

I think it's unfair to say the scope will be limited by the power of the wii. Without the pressure of having to bore people with hours of fantastic looking cut scenes they should do fine. Look at all of the fantastic RPGs for the PS2, PSX, Snes... If anything RPGs have become less grand of late, go and read Shamus's article on why FF 7 will never be remade this generation.

Cool beans. Looks like it might be a good game. I've always thought that JRPGs would actually work really well on the Wii, it'll be nice if they can actually start having some good ones. This and Xenoblade give me a glimmer of hope at least.

Sakaguchi doesn't work for Square anymore. So the answer to that question is "No".

Huh. One look at that trailer, and... I'm excited. These guys'd better be more competent than the team that did Crystal Chronicles for the Wii. I've pretty much lost interest in Final Fantasy in the last few years, so I hope The Last Story can pull me in instead.

And I do wonder what's up with Xenoblade's western release. Haven't heard anything about it, but a solid 9/9/9/9 from Famitsu is encouraging.

The Wii's power! It's being pushed to it's limits!

This is good. Now, if it comes here, I can stop playing Tales of Symphonia as my only RPG on the Wii/Gamecube.

Skies of Arcadia, I still have the Dreamcast disc for, that's why it wasn't mentioned.

Is it just me or have Japanese Devs basically given up on "Next Gen"...

Anyway, this looks pretty good and if it's half as good as Lost Odyssey it'll definately be a keeper. Though one thing that makes me a little sad, it's a JRPG, you can use other colors other than BROWN, that's a NA thing.
I think that game design in Japan has a very particular difference in their fans. Retro gaming here in Japan is super strong. Secondhand stores are thriving and full to the brim with stock that was clearly cared for and cherished by previous owners. There is so much passion for perticular games and their characters, genres, gameplay and style and so on. I think that unlike in the more technology driven gamer culture of the West, Japanese gamer culture is driven by quite different needs. Japanese developers have to cater for that or perish. Of course, they then suffer the scorn of the international gaming community. Can't win them all!

Anyway, Last Story does indeed look pretty good, and if it is indeed half as good as Lost Odyssey, I'll be getting it too. The brown thing is perhaps Sakaguchi trying to attract the Western pallate.
I wonder, can Japanese developers make ends meet on domestic sales alone, because it seems to me like they´re up against a nearly impossible conundrum trying to please two fundamentally different audiences. It´s no surprise developers tend to play it safe by playing on established franchises, but even then they get flak. Life can be pretty hard sometimes.

OT: I probably have to buy a Wii now.

It's a new Nintendo-owned IP with Mistwalker (Sakaguchi's developing team) at the helm.

I was intrigued by this when scans first started showing up a few months ago. Sakaguchi seems to be going for a Twilight Princess aesthetic which I don't mind (besides unlike most dipshits who forget about the primary colors he knows how to use the aesthetic right). The battle system seems interesting and unique, though I don't know what to think of the cover system. It's about time Sakaguchi shows the talent-strapped boys at Square how to do things right
