Reminds me of most western rpgs on the PC, accept using a wii remote instead of a mouse pointer, and the obvious anime influence. Bland, bland, bland.

I'll give it a pass.

Erm...

What exactly is the difference between this and Final Fantasy? They even have the same name, almost.

That looks great. Easily one of the best-looking Wii games thus far (although it's been getting its share of good-looking games recently).

Also, to those of you crying "wasted potential": Games don't need HD graphics or traditional controls to be masterpieces. Super Mario Galaxy 2 should've told you that.

Is it just me or have Japanese Devs basically given up on "Next Gen"...

Anyway, this looks pretty good and if it's half as good as Lost Odyssey it'll definately be a keeper. Though one thing that makes me a little sad, it's a JRPG, you can use other colors other than BROWN, that's a NA thing.

Damn this game looks awesome. Hopefully the creator of Final Fantasy can show the hacks who thought-up FFXIII how its done.
Hallelujah! How did the awful FFXIII recieve more publicity in the gaming community than the Sakaguchi-created masterpiece Losy Odyssey?! I've definitely got high hopes for this game

This looks pretty interesting. Perhaps we're finally getting an RPG on the Wii actually worthy of some mention.

For anyone who is interested, I translated (probably not very well) a couple of the director's notes on the game which he published on its website, since the article couldn't provide too much information.

"Companions"

The lasting feel or memory I got when I played the game was probably the sense of "companionship." When I redid the test play, though I should have made many observations, this was the feeling I was left with in the end.

I think you take with you not just the story, but the "connection" between [the characters] in the game's details. The continuous exchange between you and the AI-controlled characters during the real-time battles works artfully. There are also, again and again, the small conversations you have with them as you move around.
There is a sort of "drama" in the battles.

"So slow! You think you're a hero or something, you idiot?"
Whilst being scolded again today by the characters' words, the developments continue.

---The Director

"Battle System"

I want to make a "new RPG battle form." With that thought, I tackled [this problem]. I wanted to work towards a well thought out system that nicely combined real-time battles and command-selection battles, while preserving the action when it was most important. It took lots of trial and error, and I'm happy with the current system.

Controlling order and chaos through "gathering" and "magic circles" left after the impact of magic became important components. Inside the circle, healing, fire, or various other effects exist. You can also stop time to input commands. This way, you can instruct the AI-controlled characters and change tactics.

Action and command-selection...the battles of "The Last Story" work though a system which combines these two components.

--The Director

I'm not sure what's meant by "gathering." It literally said that in katakana-English.

Aw man! I was hoping for traditional turn-based combat! It's a good thing that the story is more important to me then the way a game plays for the most part and considering Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey had great stories, I'm expecting big thing from this. I pray it's a 60 or more hour game with multiple discs because I like my RPGs to have a great story with length. Still upset it's not turn-based! I prefer turn-based combat because you can implement strategies and exploit weaknesses better then any action game. I just believe a RPG requires actual thought to be used when in combat instead of quick impulse reactions and mash attack until dead.

If they can get the combat system to work the way it looks like it does on the Wii, I would seriously buy a Wii just for that game, now all the other games I'd be buying aren't the point at all.

Maybe if you didn't make the name a synonym for Final Fantasy people wouldn't think it was a rehash.

Edit: Also, I think the Wii is a good choice. A weaker graphics engine means they might take a step back from bloated cutscene faffery and focus on tight gameplay.

It looks like a great game, but one that will be cut short by the Wii's limitations (in controls, power, etc.).

Still, I might get it, depending on how it pans out.
That's a bit premature on all aspects except for 'power'. The control on Wii is as perfect as anything done on a controller. Controller games also exist where scheme is poorly implimented. There have been enough great examples of control on Wii already. Perhaps you missed them, or refused to look.

I think that game design in Japan has a very particular difference in their fans. Retro gaming here in Japan is super strong. Secondhand stores are thriving and full to the brim with stock that was clearly cared for and cherished by previous owners. There is so much passion for perticular games and their characters, genres, gameplay and style and so on. I think that unlike in the more technology driven gamer culture of the West, Japanese gamer culture is driven by quite different needs. Japanese developers have to cater for that or perish. Of course, they then suffer the scorn of the international gaming community. Can't win them all!

Anyway, Last Story does indeed look pretty good, and if it is indeed half as good as Lost Odyssey, I'll be getting it too. The brown thing is perhaps Sakaguchi trying to attract the Western pallate.

This one has been on my radar for a long time. I wouldn't say I'm excited, but...definitely hopeful.

Doesn't excite me too much, but they might have a few tricks underneath that glossy FF11-style lamp shade.

While I won't say it doesn't look great (because it looks awesome) I do think you're overstating the significance of this release with regard to the state of Wii JRPGs. What, isn't Xenoblade [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenoblade] good enough for you already?

And to all the naysayers who think this game is going to waste or is going to be a disappointment purely because it's on the Wii, I have four words for you: Grow. The. Fuck. Up.
