Blonde Bond Will Be Back in 2012

Everyone's favorite secret agent not only has a license to kill, but a director, a release date, a script, and a star.

The 23rd James Bond film was mired in uncertainty for a while, what with distributor Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer being in the throes of bankruptcy and all. MGM is bouncing back, announcing that Bond 23 will go into production at the end of this year, and has a scheduled worldwide release date of November 9, 2012. Daniel Craig is returning to the franchise in what will be his third outing as 007, and the as-yet-untitled film will be directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead, Revolutionary Road).

The script was penned by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who have written the four most recent Bond films (The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace), and John Logan (Gladiator, Star Trek: Nemesis, The Last Samurai). The plot is being closely guarded, but Deadline reports that the new film "begins after Quantum of Solace leaves off." As with every previous canonical Bond film, Bond 23 will be produced by EON Productions.

The film was intended for release in 2011, but MGM ran plumb out of money, and so put its Bond plans on hold. In the intervening year, Craig has had the opportunity to fulfill other commitments, such as filming Cowboys & Aliens and getting started on the remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, both due out this year. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing him in a tuxedo again.

Seriously? QoS and CR were written by the same guys that did (the absolutley abominable) Die Another Day? Did they somehow grow talent in the intervening years?

Great to hear. I love James Bond and the past movies that have come out. Very excited to hear more about this one.

This is good news. I was rather starting to worry that this was going to be Dalton all over again - 2 serious Bond movies followed by a hiatus and then recasting.

That said, I do hope that the next one will be a bit more Bond and a bit less Bourne. Casino Royale was great, but Quantum of Solace was disapointing. Sam Mendes is certainly an interesting directorial choice.

honestly, I kinda think that Bond movies sort of lost their, uh, James Bond-ness?

what I mean is, they switched from GoldFinger and Moonraker to just random common terrorists, instead of crazy, awesome villains that want to take over the world or destroy the moon, not take petrol from a desert

Maybe they have talent but they were the wrong kind of writers? Some things that are shit factories have good staff doing the wrong jobs (Batman: The Brave and the Bold springs to mind).

More importantly isn't the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo only about a year old at this point? How many verstions are there?

They're still following on with the prequel sequels For fucks sake.
I am bitterly disappointed, my childhood boyish joy of Bond will never be felt again until we get back into the corny gadgets and foiling schemes for world domination.

NO!

Anything with Pierce Brosman in it is instantly awesome, how dare you disagree with this blasphemy!
Anything with Brosnan named "Goldeneye" "The Matador" or "Remmington Steele", you mean. DAD was a fucking trainwreck - and eaily the worst film with the bond name attached.

(and that's the last I'll say on the subject so as not to totally derail the comment thread.)

well, we have Quantum now as a S.P.E.C.T.R.E. surrogate, so they're actually heating that way.

I have to say, I prefer the suave Pierce Brosnan-esque 007 to the punch-you-in-the-face Daniel Craig bond. Regardless, it's good to see the franchise continue! :D

Matt, you signing this as M is oddly appropriate and is making me think that you're Judy Dench in disguise, I approve. :D

I thought Paul Haggis wrote Casino Royale.

Anyway, let's see what kind of action-director Sam Mendes turns out to be.
