Space Marine Gets Invaded by Chaos this August

Insane Psychics, immense green brutes, and warp-spawned demons out to do you extreme mental and physical harm? Sounds like casual Friday to a Space Marine in Warhammer 40k.

THQ has announced that all those rabid Warhammer 40k fans will finally be able to get their hands on Space Marine, a third person shooter based on the tabletop game's sci-fi universe, this August. But Orks aren't the only enemies you'll be chain-swording to bits anymore; new screenshots reveal that Chaos, in all its tentacled, diseased, bloodthirsty, and tactical glory, will be along for the ride.

This is good news. While fighting Orks is, I'm sure, loads of fun, they tend to be a bit straightforward as far as tactics go. Their idea of high strategy is either add more guns ("More dakka") or more sharp implements ("More choppy") and charge the enemy ("WAAAGH!").

As far as intelligent and horrifying enemies go, one must look no further than Chaos. The 4 Gods that reside in a collective pool of psychic energy and emotion called the Warp have made it their goal to taint the entire galaxy with the power of Chaos, and your Forge World is next on their list of planets to convert. In the single player campaign, the protagonist Captain Titus will be pitted against the forces of Chaos made manifest in the form of Chaos Marines, Tainted Psykers, Corrupted Guardsmen, and Bloodletter Demons. Sounds like an average day for a Space Marine.

Blood for the Blood God.

Sounds interesting if they get the AI right. if guardsmen don't make use of cover and numbers, they'll just be inconsequential chaff

I still don't think one marine would be able to stand up to multiple chaos marines at one time. The chaos marines have 10 millenia of battle experience, mutations that make them better, sorcery and they are purer in terms of implants. When Space Marines do win its normally due to better equipment or overwhelming numbers neither of which are present here.

Ultramarines follow a strict tactical doctrine. To not follow it is to be considered a heretic by their peers and to be sent on a 100 year penitant crusade if they are not slain outright. Chaos are far more flexible in terms of tactics.

I'm thinking this ultramarine is going to be mary sue'ing his way through this game.

Only four gods? There's more then that.

Either way I look forward to the game. I love Warhammer and Warhammer 40k

Just got into the 40k universe recently through Dawn of War 2, got to say I'm really loving all the exciting lore that surrounds it. So if this is more of the same with good gameplay, I'm very interested.

This is probably the only game this year I'm looking forward to. This just made it that much more awesome. The only way it could be cooler is if they announced you could play a chaos marine as well.

Just like in the fluff and tie-in books you mean?

Having said that, Chaos Marines aren't always purer in terms of geneseed anymore, and some of them are flat out crazy...I never bought Guillmann setting his dogma down in stone and telling people to follow it no matter what (given that he himself would deviate it) and that even if he did, the Ultramarines aren't above ignoring his rules when the writers of 40k feel like it. Also, did it specify Ultramarines?

IIRC, there already was 1 or 2 FPS set in 40k about marines...one was a straightforwards Doom clone, the other was a weird adaptation of Space Hulk...the second sounds interesting, ahd some weird features.

Sweet :) While I love the Dawn of War series I really want to get in on the action myself. Fire Warrior was OK, but this sounds way better.

be nice if they included Tyrannids instead and let me live out my fantasy of being a Space Marine fighting off the Zerg horde, or a Space Marine fighting off the Arachnids on Klendathu.

But i guess adding more bits to an existing art asset is easier than creating a totally new non-humanoid model.

And this is why I want Space Wolves. The end cutscene would be you and your squad getting pissed on the strongest alcohol in the galaxy and using the skulls of every enemy you've killed thus far as cups!

Please dear god add some guardsmen into it, it would be cool to protect them and in return get to take the Punisher out for a spin!

Except for the Space Wolves (and Salamanders), do any Marine Chapters actually regard Guardsmen as anything else than expendable meatshields?

PS, here's hoping the Grey Knights and some Titans get involved. It's Chaos and a Forgeworld after all.

Wonder if they'll include a shooter version of Last Stand mode from DoW2? I'm super excited already, but that would make it a must have for me.

Noo, I'm posting too much!

That's another reason why I like the Space Wolves: They have some degree of respect towards the other soldiers and get pissed when others don't (see 1st battle for Armageddon in SW codex).

I think you are referring to:

1993 - Space Hulk published by EA, more of a semi-real-time tactical shooter, switching between your squad members. Fun back then. Screenshots make it look like an FPS but you can only face the 4 compass directions. There was a 1997 sequel with graphics of the level of Alien Trilogy, nice highish res sprite animation, and you could look around. In both you played a squad of terminators (as it was Space Hulk).

You can get the original from abandonware sites - it works ok in dosbox. I think the 2nd got a PS1 release which is probably your easiest route to playing it.

2004 - Fire Warrior on PS2. You play a Tau, its pretty much by the numbers last gen FPS, not bad as such but the only reason I like it is beacuase the voices are pretty good (they must have blown the budget on voice talent: Burt Kwouk, Peter Serafinowicz, Tom Baker, Sean Pertwee)

I really hope Space Marine is good but not getting my hopes up too much on this one...

Isn't it "Choppa"? And by the gods man, if you're gonna praise Khorne you need to put some spirit into it! You make it sound so casual...

Well no actually as far as I know they don't. Because time goes slower in the warp it's only been a century or two since the Horus heresy to them. Hence why they use a lot of dated armor patters and weapons.
