I hope this is going to turn out better than the way the tabletop game is going. I don't believe I've ever seen a codex anywhere near as broken as the Grey Knights one is going to be.

Do people still buy 40K games? How many times can people play The Boring Humans without getting tired of them?

I think a lot of writers forget that in 40k humans and especially marines are not the good guys. If anything that would be Elder or Tau.
Soul Drinkers FTW.

And as to the technology thing. My understanding was that 40k Tech was whatever 30k tech has survived the intervening millenia. So Chaos Marines who have experienced less time would actually be better equipped than modern day Adeptus Astartes. As I see it most of the 40k universe is a sort of 'Dark Ages' where-in history is misunderstood (thus the Godhood of the Emperor) and technological advance is shunned (thus the strict adherence to rules that the 'tech priests' follow)

And sometimes Space Marines are just that damn good, thats why they beat the Chaos Marines (See the Space Wolf Omnibus, or even better, The Grey Knight omnibus)
That would be the case but:
-Their weapons (aside from relics like plasma guns) are produced from templates they find from the Dark Age of Technology (what they call the before time) as they have forge worlds they can mass produce them. Chaos owns one forge world in the eye of terror although it would be more correct to say that the Iron warriors own it due to the warband nature of Chaos.
-In the 10 millenia since the original legions turned traitor Imperial forces have discovered more templates some of which are better than the ones they were using.

From that point onward any forge world who owns one of these templates produces superior weapons and armour. Chaos armour is mark...2? (I think) loyalist is mark 4/5 (again I think).
Imperial forces also have better armoured vehicles for the same reason. You're right in that they ban experimentation though and that Chaos mess with theirs with sorcery/demonic intervention.

If you read the Space Wolf Omnibus Ragnar is never alone against Chaos Marines (if memory serves) other than 1 to 1 duels. If he was he probably gained some kind of injury that needed healing for longer than a few seconds. Ragnar is considered unusual among his own kind for his skill and heroism, space wolves are probably the best fighters and even Ragnar never one to one'd a whole squad of Chaos Marines as Titus is set to do.

Wow I need to stop posting in this thread for a bit.

The Salamanders arguably go further to protect civilian lives than any other chapter does (including the Wolves), which is a point of contention that caused some friction with the Black Templars during the 3rd War for Armageddon.

Only four gods? There's more then that.
True, but those are minor gods of chaos that have, so far, only ever appeared in fiction/background for Warhammer Fantasy. In 40K, they have never been confirmed to exist, and since the two settings are not canonically linked, despite an apparent link via the warp and extent older publications that suggest otherwise, canonically you can only say that there are 4 gods of Chaos (in 40K, which this game is about). The possibility of a lesser deity/power of chaos in 40K is still there of course, it's just that none have ever been explicitly created/mentioned by the folks capable of shaping 40K canon.

Well, okay, you have me on a couple of the facts. But mostly I was pointing that out because it was stated earlier in the thread that space marines usually only won against chaos marines due to superior numbers. Ragnar (along with several others) have been known to 1v1 or even 1v2 on rare occasions Chaos Marines. The thing is, if their smart, the storyline here will involve more than one chapter of Chaos Marines. They have been known to interfere with each other on a regular quite often. If this is the case, then Titus might be able to link up with squads of Ultramarines and cause enough damage to stall the invaders long enough for nearby Chapters to send reinforcements.

This was exactly what I was worried about, too many orks. But now, they've addressed it.

Oh good. Another game centered around the space marines. Really mixing things up, aren't you?

{Thinks it would be fucking awesome to have an Eldar-centered game where your warrior dies shortly before the end of the game and then lets you come back as a Wraithlord}

Those relic ppl...they made one of my favorite games of all time. Freedom Fighters. So im lil bit hyped now.
Also the game looks really fun. Somehow that scene where he charges into the Orkz band and starts swinging his sword....that reminds me of Devil May Cry :O
Ill prolly buy this just to see what the story will be. WarHammer games have interesting stories.

To all those going "Oh look, another game about space marines... yawn": You may have forgotten one particular venture into 40k where you played as a Tau firewarrior. Spoiler*... it was abysmal.

There was also an ork racing game, which was abysmal...

Currently the only good adaptations of 40k in games is Relics Dawn of War series. They generally allowed you to play as whatever race you wanted, within the limits of what was available. But they are RTS games. This is a 3rd person shooter/hack and slash. You can't create a story around any individual in any other race that can perform as well as a Captain of a space marine chapter. Not to mention, no other race has as many Lone Wolf heroes as the space marines.

They are the poster boys of 40k. There are more Space Marine fans then any other race. It would be stupid to choose a lesser. It makes more sense to use a Space Marine as a protagonist.

FYI... I'm an ork through and through... and I'm just happy to see orks in games other then DoW and that crappy racing game. Relic know what they are doing.

True to some extent

There is a fifth major Chaos God who appeared in earlier editions of Warhammer 40,000

* Malal - The Renegade God - God of Anarchy and Nihilism

He's not mentioned much anymore though.

I still won't get my Ciaphas Cain FPS...

I think he's pretty much the only Warhammer 40,000 character that actually gets laid...(but I could be wrong, there's a lot of damn books to read)
Ibram Gaunt happily disagrees.

Any FPS where you played as Guardsmen would be pretty cool (so long as it avoided being TOO generic) IMO. Participating as a line soldier in a massive assault involving Titans etc. would be quite the spectacle.

Just like in the fluff and tie-in books you mean?

Having said that, Chaos Marines aren't always purer in terms of geneseed anymore, and some of them are flat out crazy...I never bought Guillmann setting his dogma down in stone and telling people to follow it no matter what (given that he himself would deviate it) and that even if he did, the Ultramarines aren't above ignoring his rules when the writers of 40k feel like it. Also, did it specify Ultramarines?
Yes unfortunately Captain Titus is an Ultramarine in all their literature he is referred to as "Captain Titus of the Ultramarines"

About the codex thing? I know right it's just stupid. There is a book series about an ultramarine captain who to save a planet did not follow the codex, had he followed the codex the planet would have been destroyed.

His commanding officers did show lenience because of that; they called him a heretic and sent him on a penitent crusade to the eye of terror to prove he was a loyalist. Basically a one way trip.
It is the ultramarine omnibus by Graham McNeill
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Ultramarines/Graham-McNeill/e/9781844164035/?itm=1&USRI=ultramarine (site i knew you could find the book)
Its about Captain Uriel Ventris of the Ultramarines, the omnibus only covers the first three books and at the moment there are six (I only read the first 4), book 2 is what your talking about (when he disregards the codex) and as far as i know the books after that is about his "crusade". Haven't read them in a while and like i said read only up to book 4 and (trying not to give too much about the story) he was still on a journey in that book. Need to get my hands on the other books, can't leave a series unfinished regardless of how good/bad it is lol.

But can't wait to try out the game, enjoyed fire warrior and the dawn of war games so far so really have high hopes and getting really excited to get into the combat face to face.

PS, here's hoping the Grey Knights and some Titans get involved. It's Chaos and a Forgeworld after all.
Not really no, considering the commanders of the Imperial Guard consider their own troops as expendable meatshields. The I.G are all about the tanks.

Grey Knights usually are only shown if there are multiple Greater Daemons or Chaos is near total saturation. I reckon that there will be Ork Gargants and maybe a Chaos Titan. Space Marines dont have anything in their arsenal to topple a Titan. Unless like in the book titled "Space Marine" your squad infiltrates and takes control of a Titan.

In the book, the Imperial Fist scout team ate the brains of the Titan's pilots in order to gain the knowledge to pilot a Titan
