That would be the case but:drakythe said:Soul Drinkers FTW.Scorched_Cascade said:I think a lot of writers forget that in 40k humans and especially marines are not the good guys. If anything that would be Elder or Tau.
And as to the technology thing. My understanding was that 40k Tech was whatever 30k tech has survived the intervening millenia. So Chaos Marines who have experienced less time would actually be better equipped than modern day Adeptus Astartes. As I see it most of the 40k universe is a sort of 'Dark Ages' where-in history is misunderstood (thus the Godhood of the Emperor) and technological advance is shunned (thus the strict adherence to rules that the 'tech priests' follow)
And sometimes Space Marines are just that damn good, thats why they beat the Chaos Marines (See the Space Wolf Omnibus, or even better, The Grey Knight omnibus)
The Salamanders arguably go further to protect civilian lives than any other chapter does (including the Wolves), which is a point of contention that caused some friction with the Black Templars during the 3rd War for Armageddon.fix-the-spade said:Except for the Space Wolves, do any Marine Chapters actually regard Guardsmen as anything else than expendable meatshields?
True, but those are minor gods of chaos that have, so far, only ever appeared in fiction/background for Warhammer Fantasy. In 40K, they have never been confirmed to exist, and since the two settings are not canonically linked, despite an apparent link via the warp and extent older publications that suggest otherwise, canonically you can only say that there are 4 gods of Chaos (in 40K, which this game is about). The possibility of a lesser deity/power of chaos in 40K is still there of course, it's just that none have ever been explicitly created/mentioned by the folks capable of shaping 40K canon.Senarrius said:Only four gods? Well, okay, you have me on a couple of the facts. But mostly I was pointing that out because it was stated earlier in the thread that space marines usually only won against chaos marines due to superior numbers. Ragnar (along with several others) have been known to 1v1 or even 1v2 on rare occasions Chaos Marines. The thing is, if their smart, the storyline here will involve more than one chapter of Chaos Marines. They have been known to interfere with each other on a regular quite often. If this is the case, then Titus might be able to link up with squads of Ultramarines and cause enough damage to stall the invaders long enough for nearby Chapters to send reinforcements.Scorched_Cascade said:Snip

There is a fifth major Chaos God who appeared in earlier editions of Warhammer 40,000
* Malal - The Renegade God - God of Anarchy and Nihilism
He's not mentioned much anymore though.
Ibram Gaunt happily disagrees.Namewithheld said:I still won't get my Ciaphas Cain FPS...
I think he's pretty much the only Warhammer 40,000 character that actually gets laid...(but I could be wrong, there's a lot of damn books to read)

Having said that, Chaos Marines aren't always purer in terms of geneseed anymore, and some of them are flat out crazy...I never bought Guillmann setting his dogma down in stone and telling people to follow it no matter what (given that he himself would deviate it) and that even if he did, the Ultramarines aren't above ignoring his rules when the writers of 40k feel like it. Also, did it specify Ultramarines?
About the codex thing? I know right it's just stupid. There is a book series about an ultramarine captain who to save a planet did not follow the codex, had he followed the codex the planet would have been destroyed.
His commanding officers did show lenience because of that; they called him a heretic and sent him on a penitent crusade to the eye of terror to prove he was a loyalist. Basically a one way trip.
Not really no, considering the commanders of the Imperial Guard consider their own troops as expendable meatshields. The I.G are all about the tanks.fix-the-spade said:Except for the Space Wolves, do any Marine Chapters actually regard Guardsmen as anything else than expendable meatshields?
PS, here's hoping the Grey Knights and some Titans get involved. It's Chaos and a Forgeworld after all.
