Impressive New Green Lantern Trailer Soars Out of WonderCon

The new trailer turns up the anticipation for the Green Lantern movie a few notches, making up for its disappointing predecessor.

The first Green Lantern trailer [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105363-First-Official-Green-Lantern-Trailer-Falls-to-Earth] was so lackluster that even Warner Bros. itself admitted [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108911-Warner-Bros-Admits-Green-Lantern-Trailer-Wasnt-Very-Good] that it could have been better. But while the first trailer was something of a dud, the second trailer is anything but, with explosions, aliens, and even an emerald green mini-gun.

The new trailer is an abridged version of footage that was shown of at the WonderCon convention in San Francisco this weekend. It opens with Sinestro - who eventually becomes a villain in the comics - telling his comrades of the death of Abin Sur, the Green Lantern Corps' "finest warrior." Interspersed with this, we see parts of the fight that led to Abin Sur's demise, and how he ended up passing the ring on to Hal Jordan, played by Ryan Reynolds, after crash landing on Earth.

Fans of the Green Lantern comics are in for a treat, as the trailer is stuffed full of alien Lanterns, making it into a veritable who's who of intergalactic space cops. It's notable how good the CGI is for the alien Lanterns, but unfortunately, it makes Ryan Reynolds' costume - which presumably isn't quite finished yet - look flat by comparison. From what we've seen in the trailers so far, it's hard to see what advantages the fully CGI costume has over an actual physical costume, but perhaps it will be more evident in the final movie.

Unfinished effects aside, the second trailer does a very good job of showing Green Lantern to be the grand-scale, intergalactic movie that fans were hoping for. Green Lantern opens in theaters on June 17th.

That was an awesome trailer. I don't know who wrote the Green Lantern oath, but it is powerful.

I actually enjoyed the first, I don't why some GL fan were upset by it, it showed how cock-sure Hal was prior to becoming a lantern and of his doubts shortly thereafter; well that's how at least it was portrayed in his most recent secret origin story. But this one focused, as the article mention, how grand the Green Lantern Corps is.

I think I'm most excited by the fact that he does more than make giant green fists to punch people.

Looks spectacularly awesome and will definetly be going to see it. But i can't stand the guy who plays Hal Jordan, there's just something about him that ruffles my jimmy's.

I hope the other lanterns play a larger role. It kind of looks like he gets the ring, goes off world, has a pep talk and (possibly) a training montage, and then heads back to Earth to fight. I would prefer more galactic battles than human supervillans.

Trailer 1: Hey, this guy's just like you... ish...

This trailer: Hey, this guy's the chosen one...

Yeah, it's one hell of an improvement.

I never knew anything about Green Lantern, but the original trailer made it look like the movie was a buddy comedy or something, along the style of Green Hornet, and we're all sick of those, I mean, how many movies can there be about people who are irresponsible suddenly getting important responsibility and hilarity ensues? (I'm not exclusively talking about superhero movies, but I have a few examples of superhero movies)

This trailer was much more serious, which is good, I particularly like the parts where he recited the mantra (or whatever it's called) It's actually a very well constructed oath, props to whoever wrote it (I'm assuming it's whoever created Green Lantern)

Anyway, these trailers were so schizophrenically different that it makes me wonder what the movie really is like.

Agreed, that was always my problem with the lanterns in the cartoons too, they would just blast with their rings and make barriers, very rarely did they make constructs.

what i want to know is how long it took to model each of those aliens... unless they were real aliens.

I think this movie will be made significantly worse by sticking to the established visual design of the comics.

Definitely better than the first trailer that was slapped together. Now I'm more interested in seeing it, although seeing Hector Hammond looks silly to me despite knowing who he is and why he's deformed.

Not too hot on the GL mythos, what was that thing that killed Abin Sur and later invaded Earth? I thought it could be Parrallax but he's made of yellow fear energy, not fire and smoke
