Japanese PSN Gets Another Final Fantasy Legend

Final Fantasy VI, widely considered one of the best JRPGs of all time, is coming to PSN later this month.

For many gamers, 1997's Final Fantasy VII was their introduction to the JRPG, and the rich worlds, characters and plots that many games at the time simply lacked. But while FF7 is perhaps the most famous Final Fantasy, those who've been with the series longer have a very fond spot in their hearts for Final Fantasy VI, originally released here in the States as Final Fantasy III.

It's not hard to see why, either. It's a fantastic game with a great cast of characters, and the Big Bad - an insane, nihilistic clown-jester-thing named Kefka - could wipe the floor with that prettyboy Sephiroth any day of the week. FF7 may be the most popular game in the series, but FF6 is arguably the most beloved.

It's also now coming to current-gen consoles, by way of Sony's PlayStation Network - at least in Japan. Square-Enix's Shinji Hashimoto of the game running on a PSP [https://twitter.com/SQEX_MEMBERS_JP/status/58057428545179648]. Judging by those videos, this is the PS1 port of the game, with bestiary, FMV cutscenes and loading times that hopefully aren't nearly as bad on PS3/PSP as they were on the original PlayStation.

This leaves Final Fantasy IV as the sole PS1 Final Fantasy (in the two anthology collections, that is - they were originally SNES titles) to have not made the jump to PSN. Something tells me that it won't be far behind.

I can only hope that FF6 makes its way across the Pacific. It's tied with FFX for my favorite game in the series, and those two games are beaten out only by Chrono Trigger as my favorite JRPG of all time.

And "Dancing Mad," seen here to the right, makes "One Winged Angel" cry itself to sleep knowing that it will forever be an inferior final boss theme.

FF6 was far superior to FF7. Whose is the great video game villian? How many lists have Sephiroth at the top? Too many.

Yeah, Sephi wanted and tried to destroy the world and use its destruction to unite us with a powerful spirit.. that was his mother... Kefka, he didn't need a reason. and you know what? He didn't TRY he fucking DID IT. Bad. Ass.

That's only about half the song though.

Great game, and hope it comes stateside. I love it more than VII, which parallels VI on many many things.

HAPPY DANCE. And there is no reason why it wouldn't go stateside, considering the following six has here.

Mr. Funk, you sir are a king amongst men.

And now for the comparison.
[spoiler/]
Sephiroth- Mommy issues; attempted to destroy the planet, didn't succeed but got close.
Kefka- Sociopathic ************, attempted to become a god, succeeded in spades and was so for roughly a good 6 months.
[/spoiler]

Kefka sucks, he's every single generic, shallow RPG villian seen in most Final Fantasy games. He just gets more love because he has lines that make people "lol".

Yeah, well... So did Kuja... Twice. (although the second time, the heroes managed to retcon the second Ultima beatdown by killing out-of-the-blue-end-boss Necron)

I mean, sure, in quite a few ways, Kuja was a drama-loving pansy, but if you're going to judge a villain on "times he destroyed the world", Kefka ain't the biggest nor the baddest.

Quite the statement,
so then, care to give an example of a good villain?

Yes, now the greatest (and most silly-dressed) villain of the Final Fantasy series can dominate the Playstation Network. FALL AND WORSHIP KEFKA!

Frankly, even as an enormous fan of Final Fantasy VI, I was never a particular fan of Kefka. I won't say he is a worse villain than Sephiroth (beacuse Sephiroth is quite weak in his own right), but he isn't much better either. People praise him for destroying the world for no particular reason, but that isn't exactly a point in his favour...on the contrary, all it means is that he has about as much depth and complexity as a Saturday Morning Cartoon villain. Infact, I would even go so far as to say that Final Fantasy VI is one of the few fictional works where the protagonists are generally far more interesting than the antagonists.

Also, nice job [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NiceJobBreakingItHero], Funk. Thanks to the way you expressed yourself in the news post, you've just given trolls an excuse to badmouth anybody for having the sheer audacity of liking VII. =/....=P

It has solid gameplay, a (genuinely) good story, memorable protagonists, a unique world that combines Fantasy and Steampunk elements and fantastic music. Simply put, it is one of the best entries in the entire series.

If that doesn't convince you to give it a try...well, frankly, not much else will.

Anyway, good news for people who use PSN, although I personally don't and already have the Advance version of the game.
