*facepalm* *Siiiiiiiiiighhhhhh*
And so here we have yet more shameful proof of an ancient and massive inferiority complex pervading even the uppermost and otherwise-respectable echelons of the nerd kingdom.
In an article about one of his preferred entries in a game series making a fourth-string appearance on PSN (make that fifth-string if you count Tactics), in a different country, that did not bear relevance to any other game whatsoever, even John Funk himself could not resist the urge to unfavorably compare Final Fantasy VII to Final Fantasy VI not once, not twice, but three times. This, despite the fact that VI is not only not his favorite JRPG, it is not even his favorite game of the franchise.
Try and find anyone on the Internet praising or even mentioning FFVI, in any context, without indulging an inexplicable urge to drag FFVII through the mud, even if no one else had ever mentioned the one game or the other in the first place. It has never happened, not for fourteen years now, and it never will.
I have no way of explaining the deplorable reliability and regularity of this phenomenon, except to realize that VI is Pepsi to VII's Coke: they hate being #2 with all their might, but they know they will never, ever be #1. And that's just how it is always going to be. I am truly sorry your game did not win a popularity contest that was old news before most of us were out of middle school, but consequently, the torrent of unprovoked, insecure, jealous, whiny scorn that has infested the Internet for over a decade on this pathetic and self-defeating rivalry- from both sides- has made me come to despise thinking about either game ever again. So, thanks for that: at the very least, this type of person managed to disgust me out of becoming one of them, so I guess that's something to be grateful for.
What infuriates me most is how this is only tolerated for this very couple, and no other. If engaging in the exact same behavior, but with any two other games- let's say Call of Duty: Black Ops and Halo: Reach for example- instantly subjects you to groaning and fanboy/troll labels after only a few months, what classification do we even have for someone who would, apropos of nothing at all, start indignantly championing the obvious superiority of CoD:BlOps over Reach or vice-versa in the year 20-fucking-24?
Stay classy, Escapist.
