Capcom Kills Mega Man Legends 3

Much to the chagrin of its fans, Capcom has cancelled development on Mega Man Legends 3.

The game, in development for the Nintendo 3DS, would have been the first Mega Man Legends sequel since 2000's Mega Man Legends 2.

Capcom's official announcement attempts to explain the rationale behind the decision:

... there are tough realities in this industry that are largely left unpublicized for a good reason--because they're tough. All games go through a multi-stage approval process, but most games are not brought to the public's attention until that final approval has been met. With Mega Man Legends 3, exposing the fans to that process was part of the project's core concept--to show everybody what it really means to create a game. We were all in it together here, for better or worse, and now together we must accept the outcome that many games ultimately face.

I know that many fans are extremely disappointed by this news. Please realize that this cancellation is no less of a blow for the dedicated staff who have been working on this project for most of a year now. Since Legends 3's first conception, it has consumed most of the team's waking hours. We have been living and breathing Mega Man Legends for months--We've spent hours upon hours in meetings, created vast amounts of content both in the game's prototype and here in the Devroom, and there have even been multiple trips overseas to meet and discuss the game's progress. To we who have been deeply involved in this project, it is more than a game--it is a symbol and a manifestation of the collective hard work, creativity, and vision shared by all of us. Not just a product, but an amalgam of minds.

The decision to close this project after all it has meant comes as very difficult news to all staff members as well, but we must move on.

Word of the game's cancellation began to circulate throughout the Internet gaming community last night, and the response was just short of militant [http://twitter.com/#!/search/mega%20man%20legends%203]. Fans immediately launched in histrionics, slamming Capcom and the Nintendo 3DS' game selection with the sort of caustic aplomb the 'net is known for.

Still, none of this should come as a surprise. As the Capcom announcement said, the company was aiming for a never-before-seen level of development transparency. The reason we normally don't see development teams offering such intimate details is precisely because games are cancelled so often in this industry. Publishers don't want to get fans' hopes up only to have to dash them due to unforeseen financial realities.

If anything, this cancellation is a textbook example of how not to promote a game.

One of the biggest shitstorms of the year. Canceling Universe prior to this only fuels the fire. It seems like the Blue Bomber's days are numbered at this point, really.

Oh and yes, Capcom can fuck off. Can't wait to fork over 40$ for the complete edition of MVC3!

What? I... I was planning on buying a 3DS just because of this game and now it's not coming?
I... I... I will just some pills and chill before I do something I regret...

What did I expect from a company that treats their fans like scum? What did expect from a company whose most notable achievement is dressing up DLC as content on the fucking disc? What did I expect from a company that lies about an incentive that was clearly meant to curb used sales by going "DURR TIS NOT FER USED SALES!!1! DURR HURR HURR"? And SERIOUSLY, what did I honestly expect from a company that haven't made a good game since Resident Evil 4?

Exactly this.

Thank you Capcom for making your games extremely easy to boycott and/or buy used for dirt. Not that you couldn't shit out anything of any mentionable quality.

I agree. We should have guessed that they would give us an "Ultimate" version of MvC3 instead of DLC... though, it still doesn't make it any less obnoxious.

I don't get it. Nintendo makes billions whoring out their platformer IP and Mega Man is arguably as popular as most Nintendo characters... you'd think Capcom would have caught on by now.

Capcom killed Megaman Legends 3 on 3DS to make it a full on console game
This is my only hope. Unfortunately, their full press release statement makes it seem like any of the development was trash, which leaves it doubtful. I know a handful of people that were only interested in the 3DS because of Megaman Legends 3. Bringing it to the consoles would have made the most sense in the first place, but why cancel is altogether? I'm not even a Megaman fan and I would probably get it.

I think Mega Man's days were over when Inafune left Capcom.

Also, are you freaking serious about MvC3? That is bullshit, but I guess I should have expected as much. So much for my $70 collector's edition!

Making a full on console release for MML3 across all three systems makes way to much sense to come from capcom. I bet they are working on Super Street Fighter IV:Arcade:Ultimate:Not Quite done milking this, edition.

and yet another reason why I find Inafune's departure to be nothing short of selfish and childish. Eguchi was obviously trying his hardest but it looks like his word wasn't enough. Still, I wish the best for whatever CAPCOM has.

As I've said since I learned this news, I will not buy any Capcom games new anymore, since this company has made it clear that they do not want my money. Mega Man Powered Up coming to PSN? lolno because it "doesn't work" but we know it's a BS excuse because it worked fine in Japan. Mega Man Universe? Canceled. Ace Attorney Investigations 2? Not being released outside Japan. And Legends 3? Sure. No wait, now you can't have it unless this Prototype version that we're putting out with the launch of the eShop does well. But now you can't have the Prototype version either because we're delaying it. And now you can't have any of it because we're just massive trolls.

If they even manage to get out Dead Rising 2 Off the Record (which would be surprising at this point because it's not another slightly upgraded version of one of their more milked than Call of Duty fighting games), I am getting a used copy. Capcom doesn't want my money? Capcom will not get my money.

It's still a rumor but a pretty highly probable one at that.

This upsets me greatly, but for different reasons.

I firmly believe what's being said here, about the development team being so deeply gutted about cancellation, is true. And I further believe it's true that this happens all the time, and fans don't normally see. This makes me deeply frightened not just for Mega Man or Capcom, but the whole of the video game industry.

See, like many children of the 80s, I grew up wanting to design games for a living. As I got older and realised how complicated and unglamourous that really would be, I stopped wanting to do that. Now what I see here, is a curtain being steadily pulled back on the videogame development business as being far more soul-crushing than it seemed even to me.

My fear is that episodes like this, specifically seeing how much work goes into games that never see the light of day, and how hard it hits those who worked on it, and how often it probably happens, will just push more and more talented people away from the industry as a whole, until hardly anyone with both the talent and desire to make video games for a living will want to put in all the work and suffer with all the heartache and heartburn that it will entail. What would be the future of video games then? There needs to be more encouragement to bring talented developers into the industry, not scare them away.

It's sad to think about, but the state of the industry makes me fear the worst for the future.

That is mightily disappointing. The structure is perfect for legends to work as an mmo. Oh well I'll still have my childhood memories of mastering every trick swing in Bionic Commando.

And so it begins, the great shitstorm of our time.

Seriously, though, this game was the tipping point for getting me to buy a 3DS. That's $300 I'd like back, Capcom.
