Xbox One Not Backwards Compatible

You might want to hold on to your 360.

Despite lasting the best part of half an hour, Microsoft's Xbox One (which we're definitely calling the "Xbone") reveal was short on actual info, games and anything that didn't involve ancient blokes in identical casual suits spouting buzzwords. Tellingly, it didn't answer the three most pressing questions that have dogged the new console since rumors of it first began: Is it always online, does it block used games and does it have backwards compatibility?

The first two are still up in the air (it's now looking like the console may not require an online connection but there may be some anti-used games shenanigans going on [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124216-Microsoft-Hints-at-Pre-Owned-Fee-For-Xbox-One-Games]), but according to the Verge, the console is definitely not natively backwards compatible.

Microsoft's corporate vice president of Xbox Live, Mark Whitten, says this is down to the Xbone's hardware architecture, which is a apparently a radical departure from the 360s setup.

"The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn't really work from that perspective," he explained.

This is processor-level incompatibility, so it extends to all 360 games, disk-based or otherwise.

While hardware buffs might see the change as necessary, many see backwards compatibility as an easy way to bolster a console's library during that difficult first year on the market. Microsoft claims there'll be at least 15 exclusive Xbone games on the market by the end of its first year, eight of which are supposedly new IPs. Account for a handful of Kinect 2 titles and you're not left with many games for core gamers.

Not all is lost, however. The lack of native backwards compatibility doesn't prevent Microsoft from putting some kind of emulation system in place like it did with the 360. That system was finicky and woefully incomplete, but it did allow me to play Crimson Skies. Kind of.

XBone is my new favourite name for this console! Long may it haunt Microsoft!

OT: I'm not particularly interested in Xbox this time around. I'm going to go for the PS4 because so far Sony seem to have more of a focus on games than Microsoft does. That's kinda important to me, as a gamer.

Either way, backwards compatibility seems less likely with each generation so it's no longer a deal breaker. Looks like I'm just going to have to make more room for all these damn boxes under my TV.

Holy cow, this is a BAD time to be a console gamer.

Maybe in seven years, we'll get the good stuff.

Whelp, for those saying "at least Microsoft won't be as stupid as Sony and not include Backwards compatibility" looks like that's gone out the window. And with both consoles being on said "even"ground... I think I'm going for the PS4. Primarily because the name actually sounds like it's progressing instead of falling backwards.

XBone is appropriate for this failure. Putting aside the jump in Sony's stock from the awful, awful conference... used game shenanigans and no ability to play my 34 xbox discs, to? Fuck that. I was right all along, this next gen is going to be the most incompetent. The wiiU now actually stands a chance... and it really, really shouldn't.

Damn right. Until they actually show some stuff I want and deny those "always online" and "the Kinect will be watching you as you play" rumours, I'm not holding high hopes for this. And that name... Xbox One? Seriously?! Yeah, X-Bone for me.

Nice to see that they were spooked away from always-online, but they just couldn't shove this console out without trying to get away with something could they?

LMAO that is awesome! I bet those idiots did not even think that would happen. I love the morons that work at Micro$oft

OT.

So yeah I might buy one of these.... In 2020..... For $50....

PC gaming here I GO!

Years from now... "Daddy when did the consoles die?" "well son 2013 when Sony and Micro$oft decided to screw over their existing customers." "Daddy why did they do that? Did they not like them?" " No son they hated the consumer, because they said we were all dishonest morons who would buy what they made no matter what it was" "Daddy were they stupid?" "Yes... yes they were my boy."

Xbone is appropriate considering the thing everyone is most excited about is the Call of Duty Dog.

That confrence gave me no real hope for the Xbone, and I haven't had any real interest in a Sony console in a while, so it looks like I'll be sticking with PC gaming for now.

I would add something about the 360 hating its Dad too

---

Based on what I saw in the conference, it looks like most of the features showcased would require a high-speed internet connection. What I'd really like to know is how much their games are going to sell for; if 59.99 is still the standard or if the price has gone up but $10. Either way, I'm not touching this thing.

What a carnival of shit this was.

Based on all that TV talk in the unveiling, I'm just calling it the IdiotBox.

Yeah, the most stand out things at the Sony PS4 conference were exclusives... and this barely even has that thus far. Let the PC gaming bandwagon begin! We shall cut a trail through console territory to a promise land!

Now, they could negate this problem by making it so that I can have my original Xbox 360 and the Xbone plugged in on the same TV at the same time.

Probably wishful thinking though...

So not only will I not be able to play any used Xbone games, I won't be able to play my downloaded 360 games?

Yeah, think I might pass.

So... its gonna be like the PS3 and "teh Cell"? Hopefully for people whom it may concern, it wont be as hard to develop for as the PS3. Also, from the sounds of it, Blops 2 is gonna be my last COD purchase. Unless Ghosts comes out for the PS3 and 360 also. Not really sure if that actually bothers me...

I'm starting to worry that the reason they've avoided talking about the always online and used game blocking is that they want to try and slip it out when no-one will notice, so that they can then say they told us. Or some such method.
Still, it's been what, 2 years since my Xbox broke last time? It should be good for another year or so, as long as I avoid playing on it too much.

Maybe people should actually listen at these things, they very clearly said "fifteen exclusive games, eight of which will be new IPs". EA will never release exclusive games for just one console
