Microsoft Applied to Patent TV Achievements

Microsoft applied last November to patent an Achievements-style system for television.

Arguably one of the most important features introduced in this last generation of videogames have been Achievements. While some regard them as pointless or even annoying, there are others who <a href=http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2009/10/07/news-gearbox_2700_s-randy-pitchfords-says-easy-achievements-improve-sales.aspx>revel in working through a game and jumping through every hoop its developers could concoct for them. Now, with the Xbox One on the horizon and looking to launch with a wide array of television focused features, Microsoft may be looking into TV-centric Achievements to keep your butt planted firmly on the couch.

While the Xbox One <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124210-The-Baby-Has-A-Name-Xbox-One>was revealed only a few days ago, Microsoft apparently filed patents last November for an Achievements-style system it could apply to television. The patent application labeled the television viewing experience as a passive one and described a desire to "increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content." Doing so could earn viewers "awards and achievements" connected to said content.

In other words, if a person were to watch a certain program or series of videos, the system in question could track that and reward the viewer for doing so. According to the patent application, these Achievements could potentially direct viewers to watch more of targeted content or even to sit through advertisements. "By tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content, thus increasing advertising opportunities."

Where this starts to tie into the Xbox more directly is in the idea of integrating the Kinect with the aforementioned Achievements system. The Kinect, for instance, could be used to track if a viewer remains in a room for the duration of a program. According to the patent application it could also be used in product specific Achievements. For instance, an Achievement could be earned for holding a brand of product up to the Kinect during a matching advertisement.

Now, it's important to remember that these are all just ideas on a patent form. We have no current indication that Microsoft or the Xbox One will actually be utilizing any of this. That said, with other groups and companies using Achievement-style concepts to do things like <a href=http://business.financialpost.com/2013/02/06/the-power-of-play-how-companies-are-using-gamification-to-build-engagement/?__lsa=254d-aa95>improve productivity and <a href=https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zombies-run!/id503519713?mt=8>gamify exercise, it's more than a bit amusing to see Microsoft putting such effort into ideas meant to keep you sitting and docile on your couch.

Is there anyway getting any of these "achievements" would not just be considered sad? I mean you get them for simply having your TV turned on (unless they use the Kinect to check if you're watching and them we're on a whole new level of stupid).

Now I am actually kind curious about how they'd make this system.

My brother theorizes that the Xbox One (or Xbone if you will) is a dummy system so they can announce a better console in comparison at E3. With this I'm starting to think he might be on to something.

While this is the dumbest idea yet, I have to admit, I see the logic behind giving people MS Points just for watching TV.
Especially for Microsoft's sponsors.

I seriously just tried rto roll my eyes so far that I hurt myself. Not kidding. And that was just from reading the headline.

This could easily turn into viewer manipulation, especially for those people obsessed with points.

All of the things the XBone is doing is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

Yes, I made a bad funny.

That is spectacularly stupid, and I really hope is just stays in patent form.

If not, then I will just sit in a corner and cry bitterly.

New achievement unlocked "Incest is the best" watch the Cersai and Jamie Lannister sex scene six times in a row.
Personally I would prefer "Fun for the Whole Family!" for the title.

Achievement Unlocked!

-359G, Watched TV on your video game console.

I honestly don't really see the point in this multimedia thing they're going for. I barely watch TV as it is, and for what I do watch, I have a cable DVR... and a PC.

I could just imagine all the potential hilarious achievements Game of Thrones could offer.

It would be hilarious if someone tried to watch a pirated DVD/Blu-Ray of the show and gets an achievement called "I paid the Iron Price!" just before their account gets Theon'd.

I wonder how many shows will pay Microsoft for achievements if this works.

ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED
Watched 48 hours straight of porn

This is one of those funny things you joke about happening, that is really happening.
Congratulations, Microsoft, these jokes write themselves.

It's about time I got that achievement for sitting through the entire series of Charmed. Argue all you like about how it was just me sitting there, BUT I GODDAMNED EARNED IT.

Well, I've always described achievements and trophies as a marketing tool, and now it looks like they literally will be...

"The new season of Dancing with the Stars starts this Saturday, tune in for 100 Achievement points. Sit through an entire episode without leaving your sofa for the other 900... the Kinect will be monitoring you..."

Microsoft is just fast becoming the embodiment of this industry's shameless excess.

In Soviet Microsoft Russia, television watches you!

But seriously, I can't imagine any circumstance where I'd be happy with a freaking camera constantly aimed at me, reporting god knows what to god knows who for god knows what purpose. This isn't even me being paranoid... it's simply weird, and a bit creepy.
