GTA V Star as Adult Swim's Black Jesus Draws Protests

Controversial religious organization aims outrage at new late-night comedy series

Actor/producer Gerald "Slink" Johnson is no stranger to controversy, having earned praise for voicing Lamar Davis in the ultra-violent Grand Theft Auto V. But now his live-action starring debut has turned into a political firestorm as the protest group One Million Moms (who famously claimed that Maxwell the Geico Pig Black Jesus, [http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/02/geico-pig-on-a-date-anger-one-million-moms/] which features Johnson in the title role.

Black Jesus is a half-hour scripted comedy from Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder based around the exploits of Johnson as a 21st Century African-American incarnation of Jesus Christ working to do good works alongside a new group of friends and followers in impoverished Compton, CA. Charlie Murphy and John Witherspoon also star.

One Million Moms' original petition against the show from two days ago stated: "1MM will defend our Savior because He is Holy!" The cause was subsequently taken up by their parent organization The American Family Association, which filed a separate petition spotlighting "violence, gunfire, drugs and other inappropriate gestures which completely misrepresent Jesus," and also complaining that "Adult Swim is not ridiculing any other religion and wouldn't dream of mocking Mohammed or Muslims." (It is unclear whether the AFA is exempting Adult Swim's re-runs of Fox's Family Guy, which has frequently satirized [http://familyguy.wikia.com/wiki/Turban_Cowboy] the Muslim faith, from that particular criticism.)

Originally called the National Federation for Decency, the American Family Association was founded in 1977 by Donald Wildmon, who gained national fame in 1988 when he accused the cartoon character Mighty Mouse designated a Hate Group [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mighty_Mouse:_The_New_Adventures#Controversy] by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Seriously though, seriously, it'a a comedy... comedy. It's meant to misrepresent things slightly and go over the top in order to make the audience laugh. Whether they achieve that or not, just stop taking every damn thing so seriously. It's satire people.

This is not suppose to be taken seriously.
Did they even examine the trailer? You could see the themes of it, seeing how they question Mr.Johnson's character and if he really is Jesus.

I don't see how this is offensive.
It's fiction, it's comedy.
Heck, I'm religious and I ain't offended. I know when to take things seriously and non-seriously.
People are way too serious about some things. Please go rant and protest about more important stuff, jeez.

A bunch of "decency" religious nuts getting offended over Jesus being portrayed as a black dude in a "real" setting? Yeah no... Can't say that this surprises me by any means.

I'm not religious at all, but I doubt that "rational" religious people would feel offended about this either. But if anything, I like the idea of the guy "doing good works" even when he's seemingly surrounded by bad stuff.

But thats not to say their actual criticisms are any better founded. Sure there is gunfire and violence in the trailer...but is Jesus doing any of it? Not that I saw.
