Modern Warfare 2 Gets Dual-Wielding

Modern Warfare 2 is adding dual-wielding to its gameplay, though Infinity Ward is quick to assure us that just because you can act out your John Woo fantasies in-game doesn't mean it'll break the game's balance.

Dual-wielding has been around for a long time, but I suppose the thrill of holding two gigantic guns at the same time is so ingrained to the pleasure centers of our violence-craving minds that the thought of it making its debut in a big-name shooter is still something to get at least a little bit excited about. Yep, Modern Warfare 2 will have the same feature every shooter from Counter-Strike (dual elites!) to Halo 2 has already, Infinity Ward revealed this weekend.

Though Infinity Ward community manager Robert Bowling wasn't entirely specific on how it will work, it appears dual-wielding appears in the form of a perk dubbed Akimbo, which you can equip or grab off of a dead body.

"I was presenting a singleplayer mission at the GameCrazy show this morning on stage and happened to walk over a body that had Akimbo (dual wield side arm), therefore the icon for the weapon popped up on screen and the room went crazy with chants demanding I pick it up and use it," Bowling wrote in a post on the Infinity Ward forums. "So I did."

What a crowd pleaser. The perk "happened to be dual [Desert Eagles]," which suggests that you might get different weapons to double fist depending on the situation. So does that mean you can grab two AK-47s and go nuts John Woo style? "Akimbo is limited and balanced, just like EVERYTHING in the game," Bowling said. "It's limited to sidearms, harder to aim than standard and you can't go ADS (aim down sights) since you have a weapon in each hand; Among other balancing techniques, so don't freak out before you see it in action."

Yeah, calm down everyone. It's just dual wielding. Yeesh.

awww, I wanted to dual wield 2 semi-auto shotguns :(

I wonder what other perks they are adding/have added to the game.

[sarcasm]Woohoo![/sarcasm]

Now we can one-shot people in softcore as well. Seriously, the D. Eagle is overpowered enough in it's current state.

Sounds good, a neat little addittion which won't ruin the game. But I can gaurantee that people will still shout "Akimbo noob" to anyone who kills them with the perk.

Why would you ever play anything that's not Hardcore?

"Akimbo is limited and balanced, just like EVERYTHING in the game,"
Just like your super helicopter with piercing bullets and auto-tracking guns was 'balanced' in MW1 perhaps? I find that hard to believe. I'll wait and see but I'm sceptical. Very sceptical.

Dual wielded Desert Eagles?

Wow, are they going to balance that out by having a perk which gives you a Katana which you can deflect bullets with and slice the barrels off machine guns, or will the dual Desert Eagles only be usable by players with the additional 'Cyborg Arms' perk?

I suppose it might be fun... I doubt I'll ever use it, just because I can't hit anything unless I'm aiming down the sight.

Because Hardcore has no skill involved in it... Seriously. It's just a bunch of idiots running around with noob-tubes on their M4s. I'm playing on the Ps3 mind you, Hardcore is just dreadful without vote-kick.

I also realized that Akimbo is going to be instead of the red perks, so it's all good.

Do they seriously consider this a balancing technique for the Desert Eagles? I don't think I ever used their sights, and I still got plenty of kills every game with it. With two, I can only imagine the mayhem and repeated chants of "N00B!!!"...

Admittedly it's been a fair few months since I CoD4'd online, but (on the 360) I barely saw any noob-tubes in my matches, which were all Hardcore. Barret 50. Cal's and silenced AK-47s were far more popular, with P90s and...a shotgun of some variety bringing a close second for popular builds.

Perhaps it's a PS3 CoD4 phenomenon, but noob tubes were definitely a rarity while I played. Maybe my very presence on the battlefield caused them to stow their 'tubes and get a real weapon? ;)

Dual-wielded D.Eeagles?

How much of a man must you be NOT to have both arms broken by shooting at the same time?

Stupid and unbalanced, no matter how you look at it.
