Well, you'd handle the division first.

Which would mean it's 24x12, so yes, 288.

Edit: Apparently I'm a complete idiot.

It's 2.

Always sort the brackets out first. The question needs to be worded better, it is flawed.

These questions offend me as a mathematician.

BEMDAS

2(9+3)
= 2(12)
= 24
therefore 48/24
= 2

There is no argument to this >_<

bedmas or what ever

so 9+3=12
48/2=12*12=288

This reminds me of the Facebook questions that are going around to intentionally incite arguments.

INB4 this particular one starts, by the way.

For the record, I got 288.

1.Terms inside parentheses or brackets
2.Exponents and roots
3.Multiplication and division as they appear left to right
4.Addition and subtraction as they appear left to right

That is the order

Actually following BEDMAS it's still 288
48/2(9+3)
Brackets first
so 48/2(12)
or 48/2*12
read from left to right:
becomes 24*12
or 288

And that's why the standard notation for division is expression - horizontal line - expression. Because math and ambiguity do not mix.

48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(12)
48/2=24
24*12=288

would need to be: 48÷(2(9+3)) for it to be 2.
Typing it like this makes it more clear:
