Most DLC is overpriced for the content you get. Here's some of the dumbest DLC I've seen:

6 new gun skins 6.99!
5 new multiplayer maps 14.99.
New story arc 15.99 (for like 2 hours of gameplay?...)
New playable character 5.99

That's MENTAL
5.99 is 1/10th the price of a new game for a character (or just a skin change), 5 multiplayer maps for 15? That's 1/4th the price of the game in question!! Most games are overpriced to begin with when it's 5 hours of game for 60 bucks but then there's this lackluster DLC with a pricetag comparable to the game cost. Why bother?
I bloody know, and thats not even CoD pricing.

I really don't know why, but since I started using my PC to game, I suddenly don't buy DLC because I can get all the mods that will make the game awesome all I want.

Hate to say it but that figure don't exactly mean much. I mean if I bought Robot Revolution for Borderlands within the last year then I would count as having bought DLC but if that is the only one I did buy then it does not mean I approve of DLC in general. Just means I bought a single item of DLC.

Its like that more women are gamers than men because X% plays Farmville for 5 minutes a day. True Farmville is a game, I wont try to claim otherwise, so technically it does count but that figure is still pretty much fluff.

Its just bad science.

free-to-play games such as hat-trading-simulator Team Fortress 2
I LOVE HATS! Must try it one day.
You'll want to wait a few weeks. The last round of patches has everybody and their mother randomly CTDing while playing online(It doesn't happen on a closed server with bots). It has something to do with either the shooting data, the bullet-hole data, or the damage data because every time people have crashed they've been in a firefight.
I don't get the hate for hats anymore, their just bloody hats you could buy so the Dev gets money, do you hate devs making money?
Aside from that, I somehow have not crashed yet.... FOREVAH ALONE!

You're not alone there.
I also don't understand the hate. I understand some jokes about the hats, but it seems that most people hate Valve for the hats. For Gods shake, the game is free, they update if for free, why can't they sell some random stuff that has no real impact on the gameplay.

It's not like you won't notice the spy because he has a nice hat on. He's still the same character. And hats that do change the game balance can be crafted, so everyone can have the same hat without paying.

IMO, I like the micro transaction that Valve implemented in TF2. It's the best Micro transaction model that I can think of. You can buy almost all items for real money, or you can simply play a bit, get them, craft them, or trade them for other items. It doesn't affect game balance since everyone can have everything. Whether you pay, or not.

I would never buy items that affect the game balance, Simply because I like chalanges, and buying items that give me a edge over the enemy goes against my principle. But I will buy some random hats simply because TF gives me so much fun for nothing. I have over 300 hours on TF2. There is no other game except Minecraft that I've been playing so much. And it's for free. OFC I will support the developer.

Well, I wanted this to be a small rant about the hat hate, but it got out of control.

Anyways, back to the topic. I've never bought a DLC. I don't count hats as DLC's.
I don't mined Day 1 DLC's as long as they are purely aesthetics. But if it's anything more, than it's the worst sort of DLC's. The one who should actually be in the game.

I hate map packs simply because they divide the player base. I'm not willing to pay 15-20$ for few maps which can be done in 60 minutes. But if my friends buy it, I will either have to buy it, or play much rarer with them than before. I can't expected them not to play the stuff they payed for just for my shake.

Weapon DLC's. I'm mostly PC gamer, I download some mods if I want something like that.

Skins, to expensive, but I don't mind them. If people are willing to pay 5$ for a skin, go on. But don't make the default skins intentionally ugly just to "force" use to buy, or you shall fear my wrath.

Red Dead was something I certainly needed to pick up! As soon as I clear the games I currently have, I'm diving into that territory.
The GOTY edition has just come out in the UK if that helps. And at only around £30 brand new!
I got Borderlands GOTY for £24 brand new too.

Loving how cheap games are right now if you wait for the Game of the year editions. =]

I usually don't get DLC because by the time it is released I've stopped playing the game and I've moved on to something else or just can't be bothered going back to it.

**EDIT: Shivering Isles (Oblivion) needed mentioning**
That was an expansion not DLC. There is a difference. I don't mean to be pedantic but the difference between DLC and an Expansion is big.

Be nice to see what ages constitute that 51%. This year AC: Brotherhood is the only DLC I purchased. I've said for some time DLC for the most part is a scam but with over half of the people buying it, its enough to make developers continue the practice.

I'm in the 51%

I bought the borderlands DLC's, because they were legitametely developed after release (and they were on special, 1600MSPs for all of them? Who could seriously resist).

Some of the crap on there though... 80 MSPS FOR AVATAR STUFF YES PLZ, seriously crap. I only buy it for games I know are worth it.

Eh, I think a lot of you forget how shit a lot of expansion packs where I buy DLC for games I enjoy bought most of the ME2 and ME1 DLC and...um...OH, broken steel for FO3 not much else though I admit, But Pc gamer so my opinion is void to "real" gamers. Though I do wonder why even from the publishers PC DLC tends to be cheaper...

I have 2 reasons why I don't buy DLC:

1.) even if i wanted to I can't, I don't have a equipment needed to connect to Xbox Live

2.) I don't have a job, so even if I could get Xbox Live, it's a rare occusion that I can get money to buy those cards that give Microsoft Points.

Here's my question for game developers and for anyone else reading: Is it too much to ask for developers to release expansions on retail?

I know Bethesta did so with the Fallout 3 expansions, so did Bioware (I think) to a certain extent when it released a Platnium Hits version of Mass Effect. So why aren't other developers doing it in case the people playing their games can't get internet for their consoles?

DLC is overpriced crap 99% of the time. The other 1% is shit that should have been included with the game and some clown decided to rip it out and sell it separately to moronic free spenders who can't understand they are being ripped off, taken advantage of, and helping to support a terrible system.

Once again this picture tells the whole story:

Nicely put.

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction was 30 bucks, and it gave me more gameplay than all the Borderlands DLC's combined, a whole new chapter, a new boss and new munsters to kill, new items, and two new characters.

I guess these companies like to forget that some of us have been around for awhile.
Or, you know, things cost more to make? As in, it costs vastly more to develop a 2005/2011 game than in 1999?

I'm not saying DLC is without fault, but blindly saying 'oh, it never used to cost this much' is abit rich given the costs of develop are nothing like what they used to be. Especially on consoles, where 'awesome graphics' are a must as people don't seem willing to accept anything other than top-notch graphics.

Just saying...

So does buying DLC count if you buy the "Uber Edition" of the game with it all included? i.e. Fallout 3 GOTY and Dragon Age Ultimate Ed.
I'm still buying the DLC, but at massively reduced cost without the hassle of downloading it. So does it count or not?

haha privacy? seriously that's peoples biggest concern and reason for not getting dlc? man, people are funny. If you need a reason to not buy dlc it should only ever be one of two; its over priced, or its shit. And if you want to know if it is you need but spend a few minutes on the internet.

I don't buy dlc because I don't like investing in something I can't touch physically or make multiple copies of.

I also don't like that most dlc are things that would have already been included in the game back before this dlc craze began.

As a result of all this dlc nonsense, I rarely ever buy games new, because I have to assume I'm not getting 100% of my purchase.

I already paid $60 for a game, and they want to charge me $10+ for each following addition? To me that feels like cutting portions from the core game just so you charge people more for the REAL full experience.

Precisely why I don't even purchase the majority of games anymore. For crying out loud we don't even get playable demos most of the time, expecting us to get a game we have no firsthand experience how it's gonna play out. My main interest in Skyrim? Add-ons, that we're given the TOOLS for to make our own by the very developers themselves. If the fifth TES game came without the functionality of modding I'm positive the game would flop, no matter how perfect the new mechanics are.
