Ok, noob question incoming but...

What the heck is 4chan or /b/?

I read alot about both of them but never there is any explenation about what or who they are. Any of your dear fellows that can explain it to me?
Ok... You know in starwars, where the guy says 'you'll never find a greater hive of scum'? Thats 4chan, with everyone being anonymous, so they can be as shitty as they like without reprisal. Oh, and hardcore porn, child porn, more disgusting images, etc.
Actually, the 4chan rules state that posting child porn (or jailbait for that matter) is against the rules and will get the poster permanently banned. As shown here http://www.4chan.org/rules

4Chan couldn't be taken down, not legally anyways.
They IP block for Child Porn posts, and apparently pass the IP onto police.
So you can't get them for the kiddie porn.
Anon use /b/ to rally for raids, but all the other boards are fine.
And since the Threads get deleted after a certain post limit/time you can't use their archives as evidence of this, cos there aren't any.
Also Anon only ever seem to react to stuff, never pro actively attack. If IFPI attack back by even trying to close 4Chan (or even just /b/) then Anon will once again rise, but if they let it go then most of Anon will just go back to posting their normal routine.
It would be like killing the Mum of someone you can't find just to make them come out in the open, sure they'll come out, but they're gonna kick you arse in the process.
You can't fight an enemy you can't find, but sometimes not finding them is probably the better option.

You can't kill Anonymous, it's an idea. If 4chan gets taken down Anonymous will just relocate somewhere else. Even if the internet was taken down Anonymous would just go into stasis. The only hope is that they get bored of trolling.

I'm wondering if this board isn't in large part a group of /b/tards that get bored of the extremity and come here for a nice, kind sort of board with lots of moderation . . . then again who would legitimately LOOK for heavy moderation?

Even if they do manage to take down 4chan there's still gonna be lone hackers angry enough to continue their 'war'. I think I ifpi wins they're still going to lose...

Conincidently did anyone else find this hillarious in the article:
"however the .org and .com sites were left online, and could occasionally be accessed during lulls in the attack.

Why did you post that link? IE told me that it was malicious.
Neither IE, Chrome, or FireFox gave me any such warning... =/

Anyway, If true, I think that's pretty cool. I don't really support Pirating, but I don't think that TPB were the people needing to be punished here. All they did was host links, no actual files. I like it when /b/ collaborates to do something useful instead of continuing to be the oozing tar pit they usually are.

Oh... Shit...
What would happen if they actually took 4Chan down?
Perhaps it'll be like Independence Day?

They'll take out the mothership, and all the /b/tards will turn back into humans?
Funny metaphor, but I think you're right.
The internet was full of selfish, stupid assholes long before 4chan or /b/ came along. Amassing them all in one place gave them a new level of power. I was a /b/tard for a long time, took place in a couple small raids way-back-when. The hive-mind over there works more like a dartboard than anything else: you put a target on the board, and if enough people start throwing darts at it you get a movement. So if you take away the dart board, all the darts will go start aiming in different directions and do little damage to anything.

Also, for all those of you who imagine the destruction of 4chan to be a good thing or simply think that /b/ should be kept around to contain all the fucktards of the world, think of it a different way. Free speech can be unpleasant: I think /b/ proves that irrefutably. However, many people find The Escapist's version of free speech distasteful as well (cue Jack Thompson), I'm sure, and if the precedent is set it won't be good for anyone. The slippery slope is there, and I would rather not slide down into China if it's all the same to you.
Just wanted to add this in addition to my observance about /b/ being like a dartboard... I agree with this post and also think that having that dartboard on the wall is a good thing, not for the sake of rounding up these darts but because we ALL have the right to throw darts. Once you take away the rights of channers, they'll start taking away rights from anyone else on the internet. Exosus is right, we need to maintain as much freedom on the internet as possible.

4chan, specifically /b/, inspires within me many emotions. Fear, pride, anger, joy, among others. However, whenever I see something with the title "4chan declares war..." I proceed to shit bricks, followed by actual feces, followed by most of my organs as they attempt to flee the grasp of The Internet as quickly as possible.

They may not be the best ambassadors the Internet has ever had, but when they believe in something, by the gods, do not stand in their way for they will destroy you and everything you hold dear.

No matter whether or not I've agreed with who they've launched attacks on before, I've always stood in awe at how quickly "not your personal army" can mobilize, assault, and reap the reward.

Finally some good coming out of pirate bays closure. The end of 4Chan, rejoice brothers for time of prophecy is at hand. We the chosen few will inherit the internet, as those who followed the ways of the fourchan will be cleansed.
Your post count says you've been here a while.

But your words say you're awfully naive.
Obviously someone dosen't believe in the prophecy.
Yup.

I'd say that most of the posters above and below you don't believe either.

I DON'T CARE EITHER B/C I DOESN'T AFRAID OF ANY MEME!
And lo I am not the other posters for as it was written in a CERFNET bathroom almost twenty years ago.

"And Lo, behold, for the Lord is powerful and great. Though many will in tern be corrupted by the ways of the internet the few shall perservere. Though this day may not be forthcoming when those who have sucumbed will behold the true extent of their shortcommings and will be purged from said internet. Then for those few faithful, they will inherit the internet and then there will be muffins, of blueberry chocolate and flavours unbeknownst to man."
Sadly, I believe 4chan will be shutdown - why sadly, you may ask?

"And Io, it was inscribed on the post-it note of cubical 7B, that when the great sewer of the internet was closed, the waste of the world began to flood the rest of the internet, scum and monsters spreading out across previously safe networks. Io, without their lair, the scum were restless and rose over the internet, destroying all in their path. So it was written, so it shall be"
But in scripture of the 12c cubicle it was speculated that without a place to embody themselves this wreckage would be unable to sustain a solid form, and where they did only see dark they would be forced into the light of the greater internet and that this would wash over this few. They would then be forced to see the error of there ways. Which would cleanse them, then there would be muffins of blue berry, chocolate and of flavours unbeknownst to man.
We can only hope those of Cubicle 12C were right and the apocalypse of trolls was merely the nightmare of the high Office Worker Tom after eating the somewhat Holy Pizza of last night!
Yay have faith brother, the time of judgement is upon us.
"Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow of network death,
I will fear no spam post of porn; For thou in accounting hath predicted it shall fizzle out"
"Know not thine mortal bounds of digital peril; know only thine wings of ignore buttons and spam blockers."
Though we must tread carefully for fear of trolls, we put our faith in a higher power. Banhammer cometh, givith, and taketh.
"What will you do if Interwebz is able to delete me?" 4chan asked Anonymous. Anonymous smiled and replied, "The sun will fall, the earth shatter into a thousand latantcy ridden fragments, and fire- lose its -wall before he kills you. But if he does, it is a sign that the end of the world has come. As for me, I shall Troll him with my nooblet hands."
Mahabharata, Book Lulz

Does i win an Internetz or do you want more?

It's ironic that people say that shutting down 4Chan would impede free speech, yet people are also afraid that saying bad things about the place will cause the Channers to wreak havoc on this forum. This leads me to think that some Channer's do not value free speech at all.
Most people type up a nasty email or something when they get pissed; angry mobs of /b/tards DDoS. It's just their way of expressing themselves.

I thought 4chan left the do gooding to Anonymous.

Hmm. Good for them.
Anonymous just refers to the collective user base of the chans. That's like saying The Escapist leaves something to Escapists.

As someone else mentioned when the stole a quote from V For Vendetta, the concept of Anonymous exists beyond 4chan, just like Gamers exist beyond The Escapist.
