4Chan Helped FBI Prevent A School Shooting ... No, Really

This article's name's kind of misleading. Using this logic, you could say that Al-Quaida helped the FBI prevent a terrorist attack, because they flagged him because he was Al-Quaida (or something like that.) Still, good news for everyone.

Am I the only one that thinks that reporting a threat of multiple homicide isn't really heroism, just somwthing people should do regardless?

Not to say that it wasn't a good thing, but I'm just of the mindset that you have an obligation to prevent things like that if you have the chance.

If he had made a map of his school on a fps then that is totally normal.
I think your definition of "normal" needs some serious re-working if you think this is normal. This is sick.

People fail to realise that 4chan is made up of many people like any other forum, and someone might not approve of what you're doing. People also need to remember that Anonymous is a lot like the Adam West Joker. It only does things if they're funny.

Anonymous will laugh and crack jokes about the stupidity of others. Harass girls who make Youtube videos threatening them and saying that she'll put a gun in their mouth and make them a brain slushy. Convince a naive 14 year old (who shouldn't even be on /b/ in the first place) to completely destroy his fathers HDD. They'll steal from the rich and fight the strong.

Yet they have a sense of morals. If a kid abuses his cat on video, they'll track him down. If a man is molesting kids and they find out, they'll report him to the authorities. If an organisation masquerading as a religion is destroying lives, they'll protest. And, in this case, if a man brags about how he's going to shoot up a school, you bet they're going to find him.

Where are the lulz in hurting the weak and the innocent? Nowhere.

Edit: By the way, all those examples I just gave? Real things

For some reason, this doesn't suprise me. The child pornography part included, because I know what is on 4chan. What did surprise me is how the site is beginning to be shown in a more positively light. Frankily, I find that scary.

for some reason, I find this "alliance" comparable with Mario and Bowser, most of the time they want to kill each other, but sometimes they cool and go play tennis together
^This is epic. The article itself wasn't funny, I am not really surprised that 4chan worked to stop a mass murder, but your commenty was hilarious. Seriously....why the hell do Mario and Peach hang out with him?

4chan dont really take sides.
its just if you make an enemy of the people who happen to be on it at the time they will make you wish you never owned a computer

Is child porn pre-installed on people's computers these days? Anytime anyone is raided for anything at all, there always seems to be child porn on their computer.
basically law enforcement when they arrest some one calls anything depicting real or drawn under age people child porn whether they are clothed or not just so they can feel they have strengthened their case against that person.

Hell your mothers photo album is packed full of what the FBI considers porn and thats not even including the picture she has of you in the sink giving you a bath because she thinks its cute.

Even if that were not the case the average computer user picks up cp without even realizing from a large amount of sources and not all of them are 4chan or porn sites.

Last year? How long ago last year? If it was literally last year, to this day, then I don't see why this is news. 4Chan have the power to be good, but for every good action they do there's about 3 questionable actions they counter with. Doesn't change my opinion on them one way or another, which is to say I just don't fuck with them.

I have my doubts. I mean, I spend a lot of time on the internet looking at porn (not on 4chan) and while I've inadvertently seen some dicey stuff, I've never seen genuine/horrifying/real child pornography, and if I had, I wouldn't store that shit on my hard drive. Really, I have to wonder what the deal is. Is there anything that prevents the authorities from planting that kind of stuff? Do they verify the ages of the victims? Do they go into the browser cache and through deleted files?

I recently saw a great old documentary called Capturing the Friedmans, and if sex crime investigators and legal defense can bungle an situation like that in the way that they did, I'd say anything is possible.
