I remember way back when movie theaters often used to be an experience. You'd get several movies and many of which would have weird gimmicks like actors running around in the audience, weird props hanging from the ceiling and such. It is funny how we have gone full circle.
All of this stuff sounds stupid but I mean really, I can't think of a good reason to actually go to see a film in theaters without it promising an awful lot to make it different from seeing it in the comfort of my own home.
My dad was telling me that when he went to the movies as a kid it was more like a show. There would be, say, a stage magician doing an opening act before the movie started.

That sounds pretty cool to me!

I have a feeling that this would be more immersive than 3D "layers". Of course, it better be sanitary. And why the heck is it considered another dimension? If anything, it should be called 4S, as in 4 senses: sight, sound, touch, and smell (or 3S if there is no smell).

Two words: Freaking gimmicks.

This'll be in and out of theatres like red-and-blue 3D.
Yup, gonna agree.

Can we travel through time and space?. Oh, fog and water. How dissapointing.
Also This.
4D is time travel, so I call this false advertising.

Also does anyone pay for D-box? Anyone? Then why bother with throwing water in your face?

Why is it whenever this crap gets trotted out, it always comes back to getting sprayed with water, being startled by a sudden touching sensation or smelling farts?

Fuck the fart-smelling, it's the worst thing humanity can do to itself entertainment-wise

thats not 4D though. thats just using more of your sensory input in regular 3d videos.

4D movies would either be, depending on which theory of 4th dimension you follow, a movie theater that is a time machine or a movie theater that can bend the fabric of space-time.

also reading stories like this makes me happy im patient enough to wait for most movies on dvd/blueray instead of going to movie theaters.

Does this mean that we can finally perceive spacetime in cinema? Or does this mean the Tesseract from the Avengers will live up to its name? Or does it just mean we get more gimmicky bullshit that has existed for years?

I remember there being this exact thing at Six Flags (marketed as 4D as well) when I was younger that showcased a 5 minute Spongebob movie and I thought the experience was irritating even at that length of time. Its immersive until you have to wipe of your glasses from the water spritzed in your face.

Seems fine to me, as long as the ticket prices don't increase. The only downside I can see is that all of this rumbling is gonna cause babies (of those idiot parents) to cry even more during the theater, essentially ruining the experience further.

Crap, I thought these things still only existed at the Shrek 4D film they would show at Universal Studios. Place your bets here on the prices for it. Down here regular movie tickets cost $15 at it's cheapest, with IMAX 3D being $30, so I'm gonna bet 4D movies down here will be between $30 and $50. :p
Well is good to finally have something cheaper then the states. Where I live in Australia is $7 for a regular movie.

OT: I don't think there is a context where a bucket of water is considered immersive in any way apart from your head being immersed in it.

I got really excited, and then I read the article.

I guess I'm still waiting on a movie theater to give us a time-bending experience. All we get is a damn fog machine and a broken sprinkler duct taped to the back of seat in front of you.

Hey, remember the times when you could just go to a movie theater to just sit and watch a fucking movie?
Yeah, neither do I.

That's the same stupid crap theme parks pull in their attractions.

Movies are not theme park rides.

Just when I was feeling good about the recent 3D fad finally going away...

Fog AND water?! Oh boy! I can't wait until I feel like I'm getting punched in the face by the antagonist, who threw a missed punch at the protagonist that leaped off the screen!! /sarcasm

Other than that... Those kind of movies would be weird to buy on 4D Blu-Ray, since I don't have enough money to support a fog/water splashing machine to the entire body that's apparently sold separately for close to [5] times as much as the 4D ticket purchase alone... (Also, about 30 bones for the "full" experience to a movie that's barely even worth over 10 bones? If you guess that I'll pass on that opportunity basically 100% of the time, then you're on the right track...)

The fart smelling isn't new though. If you sit near me in a theater you're gunna smell farts anyway.

Also, the last fucking thing you want while wearing 3D glasses (or any glasses) is fucking water sprays... Water droplets on your glasses is fackin annoying, always.

So basically it's going to be like going to those shows at Disney, right? Like that Bug's Life one or the Muppet Show one.

I hated some of the jump scares in those.
