For a new player:

1) Minecraft (On the top of my head, would get people hooked)

2) Machinarium (Or any other puzzle game - get them thinking ^^)

3) N: The Way of the Ninja (Not as easy as those above, but I can't see one not liking this game)

4) NHL 98 (If there are newer ones, I wouldn't know, but that one rocks!)

5) Half Life (It ain't that hard, and I need a FPS title here)

My opinion would be give a couple of great games of different genres, they'll like something.

As for "must play":

1) Gothic NotR (I'd place Gothic 1 here as well, but it's more of the same)

2) The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (Maybe the other TES games are good too, but didn't play them.) Now, Morrowind is great and all, but the thing that made the biggest impresion was the thunder. 'Nuff said.

3) Mech Warrior 4. If Gothic NotR wasn't my favorite game of all time, this would be.

4) Half Life. 'cause you're not allowed to play FPS games if you haven't played HL.

5) Starcraft. The game may be old, but I'll be damned if it's not one of the best RTS' out there.

I could place more here, like SWKOTOR, Mirror's Edge, NWN, M&B, SMB, The Witcher, Heroes of M&M III (or V), and so on, but that wouldn't be 5. To many good games out there to count D:

Now, I haven't played some games that I heard were good, so my list might've been different had I played them (Would probablly include Portal). Be it as it may, these are a must.

Also, a special place for Minesweeper ^^

EDIT: I CAN'T BELIVE I FORGOT VAMPIRE THE MASQUERADE BLOODLINES D:

Portal's: It's an intricate blend of the things that make games great.
Half-Life's: Fantastic story, fantastic narrative.
Counter-Strike: Pretty much set the standards for online FPS'
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Same as above.
Duke Nukem 3D: To relax yourself after binging on that many intense FPS'

Yes you are. As most people prefer (myself included) to kill things using "right trigger" rather than telling a poorly dressed character to, by pressing the "A" button a few times.

OT:
well you want a range of games so...
FPS Battlefield series (any game)
RTS Supreme commander FA (or DOW)
RPG mass effect
MMO EVE Online (i refuse to promote WOW in anyway)
Platformer go go beckham adventure on soccer island (cause i can)

"kotor" is sufficient and i cannot reiterate how TERRIBLE mirror's edge is... unless you mean that one should only play for a half hour and skip every cutscene they can and have the mute on when they cant skip.

am i the only one who hated mirror's edge? fuckin terrible...

course everyone has a right to their opinion.

1. Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past
2. Bioshock
3. Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2
4. Portal
5. Final Fantasy IX

If I were to introduce someone to gaming, I would use these 5 games and proceed to laugh at them as their social life dwindles to nothingness

Silent Hill Shattered memories
Metal Gear Solid
Skies of Arcadia
Metal Gear solid 4
Trace Memory/Another Code

Those are in my opinion the five best stories in videogames. This would be a good way of demonstrating something that neither film nor book could really replicate. Sadly, I could only pick five, so here are the runners up:
Alan Wake
GTA: Lost and damned
GTA: Ballad of gay Tony
Kane and lynch
Call of duty: Black ops
Call of Duty 4
Another Code R
Killer7
inFamous
Red Dead Redemption

"poorly dressed" is all relative, and in all honesty i try not to stand next to some of the more outrageous ones (see tidus, most of the cast of ff12, and countless others), and how a person looks has got to be the least intelligent argument i have ever heard. usually reserved for when nothing more substantial is defective in the character's life/run/experience.

as to the gameplay, the gameplay is a means to continue a story, maybe i just like long drawn out stories more than most other people...

and "most" would be a difficult term to use... ever seen a D&D convention? there arent even buttons to press there, hell there are rarely professional writers either but people still gather to spend hours upon hours essentially NOT pulling any triggers to kill anything.

also woo hoo opinions!

I dunno. I would probably have "you have to burn the rope" on their though. Few games are quiet as unique and discussion worthy as it.

1. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
2. Persona 4
3. DOOM
4. Super Mario Bros.
5. Super Street Fighter II

That seems to about cover it, two great story driven games, the original shooter, the game that saved videogames, and the birth of the modern fighter.

Honestly, I was surprised when I read that people disliked the game. The story may not be the most thrilling one, but I find the gameplay most amusing. Only sad it's so short.

gameplay WAS fun... until the point where i realized it was not going to get any different... and then all i could think was "why the hell are they spending so much money trying to stop me? the hell is in these packages?" and then i stopped having fun and turned it off.

though i AM glad that someone out there can enjoy it, for i cannot.

4) Splinter Cell Chaos Theory(The best stealth FPS I have played, can be tense pulse racing, humourous and fun)
I have played it and have to say 2 things:
1) Its Third Person not First Person.
2) Ubisoft has been making their games better with each installment. The reason for the humor was because pulling off the past games they got rid of the things that they poked fun at making the game funny. And the dry humor that is Lambert.

Pokémon - any (pref Red or Blue), there's a reason it became as popular as it did. And the game's are damn solid experiences in every right.

Shadow of the Colossus - such an amazing game in every aspect. There are no flaws.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - The definitive modern FPS, they won't ever reach that high with the series ever again. (I would have the Half-Life series in here, but CoD4 was just more fun)

Starcraft 2 - The definitive RTS. It's perfect. Huge active community, so balanced that there's untold "effective" strategies. And it's an awesome e-sport.

Morrowind/Oblivion - The definitive western RPG, I couldn't separate them because they're both such amazing titles.

And yes, everything is subject to my opinion. Just before someone quotes me and says "you are wrong, here's MY personal list".

My top five would be:
1. A mario game. Probably super mario world.
2. A zelda game. Anything N64 and after.
3. Portal of course.
4. Persona 4. While it's not the most accessible, it is still an amazing game, and showcases the jrpg genre.
5. Mass Effect maybe. Just to show epic storytelling.
