5 Videogames everyone should play

[HEADING=3]Chrono trigger:[/HEADING] because it's use of time travel as a story telling device, while cliched at times is one of my favourite game stories to date. But mostly because of its atmosphere. You can feel what is going on through the art and music (Oh god the music) and it is a perfect example of how you should tell a story. Also, Frog is the best character. Ever.[sub]except maybe Robo[/sub]

[HEADING=3]Pokemon[/HEADING] (Gen 1 or 2 preferably): so you can understand how it feels to be a pokemon master, nothing compares (also one of the most influential series ever)

[HEADING=3]Oblivion/Morrowind:[/HEADING] Simply amazing world to explore and immerse yourself in (yes I prefer oblivion, sue me.) Possibly the most detailed and interesting fantasy world I have come across and can be fun no matter how you play.

[HEADING=3]TLOZ:OOT [/HEADING](Or wind waker / twilight princess if you must) : Cliche as anything I know, but there is a reason it's so well remembered, simply a fantastic game with interesting and challenging (at times) dungeons. Also, it is a cultural memory that simply wont be forgotten. Not playing it means missing out on probably Gaming's most loved title. Forever.

[HEADING=3]Portal + Portal 2[/HEADING] (technically two games, but a continued story so still counts) Because the portal mechanic is fun and interesting, the puzzles can be confusing but are always solvable and the atmosphere is brilliantly crafted. However the main reason that you should play portal is because it is one of the funniest games of all time. GLaDOS is possibly the best written 'villain' ever and it will help you understand about half of what people say on the internet.

That's my list. And that's If I had to name five, If I were to name all the games I think everyone should play it would be probably ten. And include a 3D sonic game! ooh, shock!

But one thing I can never emphasise enough, Play Chrono trigger. Play it in a dark quiet room with the sound turned up and no interruptions. You wont regret it.

I'm going to cheat a little and post ten, five old classics and five newer games. Also, because the person you are recommending the games to matters quite a lot, I'm not going to put them in any specific order, but instead choose one from 5 of my favourite genres.

Adventure (Best genre for new players, in my opinion):
Old:
King's quest 6 (PC) A lot of people cosider it the best in the series, and it's definitely the easiest to get into. It's also pretty much the only game in the series that can be enjoyed at face value with no nostalgiagoggles required.
New:
Ghost Trick, Phantom Detective (DS) An awesome little game, one of my favourites for the ds. It's a bit heavy on the plot-to-gameplay ratio but if you don't mind reading a little, it's a must play. The clever gameplay mechanics certainly help.

Platformer/Action-platformer:
Old:
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES/SNES/GBA...) I don't think I have to explain this one.
New:
Contra 4 (DS) I know this isn't the most beginner friendly game available, but if you don't mind a genuine challenge, you can't go wrong with contra. Contra 4 should teach the new gamer that not all new games do everything for you if you just cry a little!


Strategy (turn based, because it's easier for new players):
Old:
Civilization 2 (PC) My personal favourite of the series. 4 was a better game, but for some reason I still prefer this one (Can't say anything about 5, haven't played it). It's a classic, what more can I say.
New:
Advance Wars: Dark Conflict/Days of Ruin (DS) (A lot of ds games, I know). I didn't want to say Civ 4 so I chose this instead. Again, the best game in the series. Easy enough to get started with, but the difficulty rises pretty quikly to give a good challenge.


RPG:
Old:
Fallout 2 (PC) Turn based combat again, makes it easier to get into, since you don't need to be that familiar with the controls to react quikly. This is one of my favourite RPGs of all time. The plot is better in the first one, but Fallout 2 just has a lot more for you to do.
New:
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (PC) I know some of you would probably put Morrowind here instead, but I think Oblivion is better for beginners. It even has a handy difficulty slider for those who think it's too tough. It has its problems and that's why you should get it for PC. Mods can fix a lot.

Stealth:
I cant think of an old stealth game, at least not one that is good, so I'll just give you a new one:
Hitman: Blood Money (PC) I'll have to choose the best game in the series again. Great game with many different ways to beat the levels. And the easiest difficulty has infinite saves/mission so it should be ok for beginners too.

FPS:
I don't really play modern shooters so I'll just say Doom.

I'm trying to pick games I've played that I don't think many people have played. Emphasis on the word 'trying'. xD

1. MDK And MDK2 - Old third person shooter for PC and PS1, the player's weapon being a minigun with infinite ammunition which can be attached to Kurt's head to make it function as a variable scope sniper rifle, with many types of ammunition to use. Has great, unique level design and art direction.

2. Future Cop: L.A.P.D. - You are a cop blasting away crime in various parts of L.A. in a bipedal mech that can transform into a hovercar. Has a superb two player mode featuring both full campaign co-op and a versus mode. It's a little unbalanced with the weapons though, a particular set being vastly superior to any of the other combinations possible, but it's also a game I wish had a sequel or remake so they could fix these problems.

3. Bloodline Champions - A top-down fighting game I discovered recently. It's pretty competitive with constant laddering and online tournaments, and is a free game relying on microtransactions, but most things can be unlocked through playing as well.

4. Mass Effect - I really don't need to describe this game to any member here, do I?

5. Stubbs The Zombie - Play as a zombie eating people to get to the love of your life. Very comedic story, great gameplay, lots of zombie weapons to use against the police and scientists trying to get you for study.

1. TF2. It's free now, so you have NO EXCUSE not to play it.
2. Portal (Or Portal 2 if you've already played the first one.)
3. CoD4. What every single modern-day shooter SHOULD be.
4. Bioshock. It's art, plain and simple. Bioshock 2 on the other hand...
5. Borderlands. Basically Fallout only better and fun.
6. (Yeah, I'm a rebel) Halo CE. Kind of jumpstarted the FPS.

NOTE: Though all of these games rank up on my favorites list, this is definitely not my list of favorite games. I would never recommend my favorite game (Dragon Age: Origins) to anyone unless I KNEW they'd be patient with it.
