my five favorite games are in no order
1) Oot
2) tf2
3) resident evil 4
4) fire emblem ss
5) dragon age

but for the most part i wouldn't call them the 5 must play games. if i had to make a list like that for some unknown person to play i would chose games that helped shape the industry.
1) i would leave Oot
2) the original Mario
3) half life 2
4) kotor
5) final fantasy 7

1. Little Big Planet: For the amount of control you are given and the limitless possibilities.
2. Portal: For the puzzle aspects and uniqueness.
3. Mass Effect: For the quality of story and writing.
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare: For a taste of multiplayer.
5. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: For the immersion and free reign that players are given.

A good variety of games imo. I wish everyone would give at least these games a chance.

Honorable mentions:
Civilization IV/Age of Empires II: I feel bad about not putting a strategy game on there.
Half-Life 2: A very high quality game, but I don't feel that it has anything that the others don't.

personally I would say take out MW cause well. its popular yes but not to fun after the first couple of months mainly because of the multi-player. And where are N64 games the N64 was renowned for its game content, Legend of Zelda series, Super Smash Bros 64, GOLDEN EYE (actually that was multi platform wasn't it) etc. Golden Eye should definitely be up there. but point aside these are games you can beat 100% every time you play it and they never get boring. These old school games are epic (and yes I realize Doom is up there it is old school and very awesome.) the original Duke Nukem, Castle wolfenstein (not the new one). so how can you limit it to just five? Oh Thief series which started up the espionage/sneaking around genre, unreal tournament etc theres just too many must play games. maybee if you sectioned it off Ie computer games, platforms, old school, ,new school, next gen, All time etc then you might be able to get the majority. also I guess the reason there is no list like that cause theres too many good ones. oh assasins creed, portal, silent hill 2, anything yahtzee likes etc

1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (it was pretty much the height of the career with the most responsive, solid controls and best level design.)

2. Super Mario World (It's slightly like Super Mario Bros, only longer. Extra points if it's with Super Mario All-Stars)

3. DOOM (the game that gave a flying start to first-person shooters)

4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (The turning point for first-person shooters)

5. Rock Band (just plain fun. Make sure to use a Guitar Hero guitar though.)

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a game everyone should play?

Good God, I was scared shitless in many spots when I played Dead Rising. No way in hell I'd ever play Amnesia. I'm done with attempting horror games.

I can't really think of a game that everyone should play. If everyone were to play the most beloved game of all-time, I still think only 30% tops would enjoy it.

in no order.

Deus Ex, I've not seen that level of depth in a game since.
Rome Total War, The game I've probably spent the most time on
Freespace 2, probably not on my top 5, but i recommend it because we need more space combat.
Half life 2, a shining example for FPS's to inspire to be.
Minecraft, exploration is a mechanic rarely exploited in modern Videogames, minecraft captures it perfectly.

Honourable mentions

Lego rock raiders, my favourite childhood game
left 4 dead, because the world needs to learn to work together
Pokemon leaf green/fire red, i have never become more attached to any thing more in a videogame. I still remember you all Etna, Tesla, Scrambled, Poseidon, Rocky and Tiny

1) Ocarina Of Time - Still the best gaming experince I was lucky to be around when just released. Almost everything about the game is really well done, especially the game play, design and music. Those of you who mostly need a good story and interesting characters to be entertained won't find it here, but still give it go since I'm sure you want to find what all the halabaloo is all about. You don't want to spend the rest of your life wondering, do you?

Willst thou sour? Or willst thou suck?

2) Shadow of the Colossus - Another game with out a really interesting story or characterization, but still one hell of an experience. This is the game your looking for if you want to take on intimidating giants in a big beautiful landscape, so beautiful it leaves many with their mouths open. The horse is a bit of a pain to adjust to though.

3) Metroid Prime - Great design, textures, music, sound and game play all come together to make one of the best atmospheres ever. I would've said Super Metroid instead if it wasn't so difficult for the average gamer but they're both brilliant. I believe that Super Metroid is the best game on the SNES while Metroid Prime is the best on the Game Cube.

4) Total Annhilation - A really old RTS that was amazing for it's time. Possibly still one of the best out the genre. The first to go into more realistic movement and they managed to still make it have good play, way ahead of Starcraft even though Starcraft still managed to be a great game. Thing that kept me attached to Total Annihilation for so long was the unit creater, takes a bit of practise to understand how it works though.

5) Super Smash Brothers Melee - I'm pretty sure this can labeled a great game. It is far more easier to adjust to the smash brothers games than any other fighter (oh, and Powerstone). I choose Melee over the others because I just find the game play more fluent and free leaving you to pull of some amazing shit sometimes. Also, it has enough characters and options to keep you busy for awhile.

Heres a funny trailer that pulled me into the series - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K783SDTBKmg&feature=related

I'm surprised how many people recommend Half-Life.

Well let me put it this way. HL1 was good in 1998 and maybe in the following years. HL2, at least some people feel this way, was good in 2004.

Now, Half-Life series is shit. Ask almost anyone who got into the series just recently. The most obvious feeling about them is: meh. Or rather meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh.

Seriously, good game (or games, if you think) when it was new, but recommend it today? No.
i only played half life 2 at the beginning of this year and i consider it one of the best games ive ever played

5. most

There are no 5 definitive games because it depends on the person. I've introduced some people through Assassin's Creed, others through Portal and Bioshock. It's literally down to the individual.
If there was a like button, id click it.

Well I can't narrow it down to 5 so here's my top 10 picks. Not in any particular order:

1. Planescape: Torment. Classic RPG and one of the best of the genre for narrative alone.
2. Final Fantasy VII. Great and still well loved JRPG.
3. Mass Effect Series. Great story and wonderful modern RPG.
4. Doom. The grandaddy of the FPS because while Wolfenstein 3D was first Doom refined everything it did and defined the genre.
5. Halo: Combat Evolved. Father of modern FPS and the start of a very entertaining series.
6. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Epic and definitive Adventure game.
7. Portal. Unique and well made puzzle game with a story.
8. Amnesia: The Dark Decent. For its wonderful atmosphere that makes it a great horror game.
9. The Last Express. Fantastic point-and-click adventure game with a complex storyline.
10. God of War. Engaging action adventure games and, for the first at least, a well written Greek tragedy hidden in a bloody quest for vengeance and absolution for sins of the past.

Let's see, a combination of introducing someone to gaming as a medium (wide variety, famous games) with relative ease so they're not pulling their hair out trying to beat the first level and getting turned off to it...

I suppose my list would be...

Super Mario Bros. 3
Pokemon (any version)
Street Fighter II
Tetris
Team Fortress 2

The list should really be longer, it's impossible to give someone even a small taste of the scope and history of gaming as a medium with only five games.

EDIT: I should note that only one of those games listed would be in my personal Top 5 games:

Zelda: OoT
Super Mario Bros. 3
Sonic 2
Dragon Age: Origins
Ace Attorney series

This list is only included with which games are currently out:
1. LittleBigPlanet 2 & Modnation Racers - Fun, creative and goes on forever!.
2. Saints Row 2 - Absolute freedom and awesomness!. Fun is what videogames should be.
3. Mirror's Edge - unique free-runner which is immensely fun to play and try to beat peoples scores on time trial.
4. Pinball - one of my all-time favourite games!
5. Air Hockey - just so I can beat you at it.
