Fan Fakes Sonic & Knuckles 3D Remake

A fan has remade Sonic & Knuckles with 3D graphics, but not everything is as it seems.

Sonic just isn't meant to be in 3D. Despite some success in the third dimension, his reception outside of the side-scrolling realm on average has been negative. In 2.5D, however, Sonic looks great. A fan named Robert Medina thinks so too, and has offered up his vision of what Sonic & Knuckles [http://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Mega-Collection-Playstation-2/dp/B0002EJ8FC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282859099&sr=8-2] for the Sega Genesis would look like were it to be updated using 3D graphics.

Unfortunately, this video is not of a game developed by Medina, which would probably have been nuked by Sega lawyers anyway. It was created using 3D modeling program 3D Studio Max by animating over a playthrough of Sonic & Knuckles. He's nailed everything, from the looks of Sonic and the enemies to the somewhat more realistic looking environments.

It took Medina around three weeks in his spare time to create the short video. His goal was to see how the classic Sonic games would work in 2.5D. It's a great demo, at least.

Dude doesn't look very good at the game though. Where's the speeeed? =p

the background music sounds like Donkey Kong, what with the steel drums.

I hope the fan reaction to this shows Sega what we all REALLY wanted.

An absolute marvel, this really is.

See, this[/b[ is what Sonic the Hedgehog needs now, with the current developments in graphics technology and whatnot. A return to the original style, but with 2.5D organic-looking graphics - exactly what Medina has done here. I have Sonic and Knuckles along with Sonic 3 on PC, and while I love the games I think those graphics really enhanced the whole thing (from watching the video). Team Sonic need to hire that guy, or do what he's done, right now.

Hmmm, I'd buy it if it were a real game. I do think he should have done Ice Cap Zone from Sonic 3 instead. Or Angel Island Zone with the little intro.

This looks fantastic. I wish this was really playable. I'd play it in heart beat. Makes me want to play the original sonics...

Dear SEGA,

Seeing as your once proud franchise has become no better then mud....you should hire this guy and market this idea....3D remakes of the classic appeal that we all once loved...

Wow, it looks stunning.
Does anyone agree that there is a demand for 2.5D remakes of retro games?

Yes, you are.

It's a cut and paste copy of Sonic and Knuckles, but pretty. Music is right, too. I don't see what there isn't to like.

You're forgiven, though. Your avatar is just too awesome.

Probably did it on purpose, it's be very hard to animate over something that's going very fast

No you are not.

Though it does look good, and seeing the old snoic games in any way makes me drool, the 2.5D spectrum takes some of the charm away.

I see that this kind of a test video if you will, but the old way the shields used to shine and boxes flicker seem as though they wouldn't make it across well in the glossy 2.5 world, on that note the old hypersonic animation with the falshing stars and after images would not work either. As I say I feel the charm would be gone from the game and the reason alot of remakes don't quite work IMO is that the originals are often not broken.
