Blizzard Up For a StarCraft Movie With James Cameron

Is a StarCraft movie in the works? No, it isn't, but Blizzard would be down with the idea if Avatar director James Cameron was on board.

True to its name, PC giant Blizzard doesn't do anything at a speed faster than absolutely glacial. The idea of a Warcraft movie was first mentioned in 2006, but it wasn't until last year that the flick actually got a director - horror movie icon StarCraft II [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93330-Sam-Raimi-Set-to-Direct-Warcraft-Movie] is the new hotness, though, would the developer ever consider making a movie out of its sci-fi franchise, too?

Maybe, if the conditions were right. And by "if the conditions were right," I mean "if the director of Avatar and Aliens signed on to the project." Speaking with MTV Multiplayer [http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2010/08/30/blizzard-would-do-a-starcraft-movie-if-james-cameron-is-interested/], Blizzard head honcho Rob Pardo said that the studio had considered the idea of a StarCraft flick before.

[blockquote]We've always had an interest in seeing our stuff on film or TV. It's just tricky to find the right partners. We probably could have made a [StarCraft] movie or something on TV years and years ago, but it's really important to us that we find creative people that are really talented but also really excited about our properties. That's always been the challenge for us. I think if Jim Cameron came to us tomorrow and said, "You want to make a StarCraft movie?" we'd probably sign that.[/blockquote]

Rather than hand its franchises over to someone like Uwe Boll, Blizzard is all about working with movie-makers that fit the series in question. "That's why we did the WoW movie," says Pardo. "We were really excited about being involved with [300 studio] Legendary Pictures, who we thought had a really good track record with these sorts of movies that would make sense for our franchises."

The more I think about it, the more I think that James Cameron would actually be an excellent fit for Blizzard and StarCraft. Cameron helped define the modern space marine feel with his work on Aliens (and there's no denying that Blizzard, as with practically every other sci-fi property out there, cribs heavily from those Aliens). He's familiar with taking his time on a project, too - work on Avatar began way back in 1994.

More importantly, both Blizzard and Cameron seem to be a-okay with the idea of doing things that aren't very original, as long as they're done well. Avatar's story was as generic as they come, and StarCraft won't be winning any awards for the strength of its narrative anytime soon, but they're well-presented nonetheless. Just get someone else to write the dialogue, please.

Either way, I think we can agree that a collaboration between the people who make World of Warcraft and the guy who made Avatar would be the most profitable project in the history of everything, right?

After it came out in 2039.

You Blizzardites will regret that idea more than the Transformerites regret Michael Bay. One word. Plot.

Cameron will tear your canon apart.

Oh fuck no. I hate James Cameron. Avatar was a shit movie being over hyped and earning way more than a movie should for something that's only selling point is 3d. Not to mention they're bringing it back with 8 extra minutes, just to cash it in further.
/James Cameron rant.

maybe, though I think it would be better if Neil Blomkamp the guy who did District 9 so then it would be heavily story. :D

Yeh id like to see the Story of SC1 in movie form. Something on the lines of some first person action between normal movie exposition. XD

Farewell to likable (if not cliche') characters Starcraft.
I can't wait for the centralized romance subplot between Raynor and Kerrigan ending with the power of love in the midst of a nuclear blast (kudos if you catch the implied irony here).

Then there's the topic of James Cameron...which can be summed up with:
"James Cameron: Converting the general populace into closet furries since 2009, for profit!" (I kid I kid!)

I just got this really weird picture in my head of Sam Worthington infiltrating a Zerg swarm to learn more about their culture and ending up falling in love with a hydralisk :-/

I like Starcraft a lot, but if James Cameron gets his hands on this, then you can say good bye to any plot that the movie will have.

Don't kid yourself, haters. If Cameron lent his 3D know-how to Blizzard, it literally would not matter if the plot is related to the original canon. Gamers might get upset, but I think we've seen how effective we can be at petitions and boycotts.

Besides, if it looks pretty enough, non-gamers will appreciate the sci-fi setting all the more and it would make money either way. Around the time all of us have grandchildren, but the point stands.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! *wipes tear away from eye*

I donno, I can't help but think the core SC fans would hate the movie no matter who did what and what did who and what now, so if it gets made I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy.

Jim is a common nickname for James.

Like the artical says, James Cameron and Blizzard have a lot in common, so this wouldn't be a completely doomed idea.

You know, if Cameron could keep his preachy hands off the storyline, I know he'd at least get the effects right. But I was so disappointed in the simplistic underpinnings of Avatar and his ham-fisted, hypocritical moralizing that he'd probably ruin a SC movie, too.
