Zack Snyder Directing Next Superman Movie

Zack Snyder, director of 300 and The Watchmen, is directing the next Superman film.

Rejoice! After the disappointment that was Superman Returns, the future of a rebooted series featuring everyone's favorite caped crusader was not certain. Christopher Nolan, of Batman Begins fame, was set to produce the next film and he said that he was writing the script with Hollywood Reporter [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103879-Christopher-Nolan-Back-for-Third-Batman-Film], Zack Snyder won the post.

Snyder has become somewhat of a darling director for Warner Brothers after he scored a surprise hit with the adaptation of Frank Miller's 300 back in 2007. The Watchmen film adaptation didn't do too bad either, and he is now in post-production on his first original film, Suckerpunch. Snyder's first animated feature is in theaters now: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole.

The hiring of Snyder means that production can move forward and we may get a new Superman film by 2012. In order for Warner Brothers to keep the rights to the character, there must be a new film in production by 2011 or the rights revert back to the estates of the original creators, Joe Shuster and Jerry Seigel.

David Goyer (TV's FlashForward [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FlashForward]) is penning the script with the Nolans. There is no word on the exact plot but we do know one very important detail: the main antagonist will be General Zod.

Come, son of Jor-El, kneel before Zod! (snootchie, bootchies, ha ha ha [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYDYzyqIy-I])

Count me out. Snyder is responsible for some of the least entertaining movies I've seen in my lifetime. Superman isn't gonna look faster than a speeding anything in his hands.

God...what a way to start the week. And everyone was saying "Chris Nolan's godfathering it...nothing can go wrong!"

Hopefully I'm just getting emotional for no reason, but I'd rather not see 2 and a half hours of slow motion. The first 10 minutes of Watchmen was bad enough.

Faster than a speeding bullet my ass...

I'm happy we're getting a new Superman movie but I don't really like Snyder. He just seems to be more concerned with getting cool visuals than telling the story well.

Let's hope the slow motion is toned down. And I agree, Watchmen was something of a.. well, I read the comic, and movie adaptation was well... boring. 2.5 hours of boredom.

It may well have been closer to three, at least it felt like it. And none of the scenes gelled together at all, I mean the book had as many pages needed to put a point across, and the film just didn't, it was summary after summary with no actual weight to the side plots.

The only way this could have gotten worse is if it was directed by Brett Ratner. Or Mi-

I'll say no more. I probably am overreacting because Nolan has quite a bit of power over this film.

Maybe this one will have at least a little bit of action. The last one sucked ass.

I don't really care for Superman ever since I learned he had trouble tying a cannon into a knot with his amazing strength and he cheats when he leaps over tall buildings in a single bound.

But that thin picture threw me off when it created such long paragraphsssss......

No! Bad Hollywood! BAD!

I can let you take care of Superman if you promise 3 things:

-No slow motion
-No awkward sex scene with no relation to the story. (If there's is one, make it quick. I don't need a slow motion sex scene again).
-No bad CGI blood.

There! Are we clear Hollywood?

As long as they put story before spectacle I{m sold. Snyder is a fantastic action director so I hope that he can get the job done with the help of Goyer and the Nolasns.

Here's hoping.

Y'know, the news that General Zod is the villain is more interesting to me. Maybe that's because I have no strong opinion on Snyder. Both his last films were passable, with 300 on the higher end and Watchmen on the lower end.

Careful, you might summon the Beast..

Agreed. The story seemed to be directly pulled from the comics, and then pasted into motion picture form. The comic did *not* have an A-B flow, it branched and then converged, which is extremely hard to express as a film. And Snyder didn't have the film chops to express it as such, or even change it so that it worked as a film.

I loved 300 and Watchmen was a great flick aswell.

So I guess I'll be one of the few to say, "Go Snyder, go!"

I used to like him. I found Dawn of the Dead to be a pleasant surprise and 300 quite entertaining. A couple of years ago he was one of those refreshing up-and-comers I was actually rooting for.

Watchmen ruined it for me, though. That movie had no real ambition beyond "let's just film the book", which ultimately made it look like Snyder didn't actually understand what the graphic novel was about. Plus, putting 'Hallelujah' in over a slow-motion sex scene just looked like he was taking the piss out of us.

The biggest turn-off for me is his obsession with speed-ramping. It was kind of fun in 300, but it was never going to be appropriate for Watchmen (yet he stuck it in there at every available opportunity... and then some). From what I hear, he speed-ramps Legend of the Guardians within the first minute. His directing style has become rather tiresome really quickly in my book.

That said, I'd be happy if Sucker Punch proved me wrong, though I'm still undecided over whether to see it or not... Ah, who am I kidding, I'm a sucker for dragons. And steampunk. And steampunk dragons...
