Question of the Day, October 24, 2010

After losing its original publisher, the developers of the augmented reality game Ghostwire are searching for a new company to help release the game. Ghostwire uses the DSi's camera to overlay images of ghosts while viewing your immediate surroundings through the DSi. Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever experienced a supernatural encounter?

If you have any suggestions for a Vox Populi, please send a PM to Lauren Admire.

No, ghosts aren't real. I saw something that people might think was a ghost once. It looked like a blue young woman that appeared to be walking. It was just a wierd reflection on the glass...

My belief is that while I'm quite certain ghosts don't exist, I also believe that if they do exist, they are just another natural phenomenon.

It depends on what you define as "ghosts." The OED (Oxford English Dictionary) states the following (amongst many other definitions):

1. The soul or spirit, as the principle of life [...]
3.a. The spirit, or immaterial part of man, as distinct from the body or material part; the seat of feeling, thought, and moral action. Also, in New Testament language, the spirit or higher moral nature of man; opposed to flesh. [...]
5.a. An incorporeal being; a spirit. [...]
7. The soul of a deceased person, spoken of as inhabiting the unseen world.
8.a. The soul of a deceased person, spoken of as appearing in a visible form, or otherwise manifesting its presence, to the living. (Now the prevailing sense.)

Personally, whilst I find it difficult to believe a "ghost" manifests as a being with cognitive faculties, "immaterial part of man" from definition three seems plausible.

I was watching a television program some years back, one of those Halloween "send people into ancient castles that are supposed to be haunted" bits. A person claiming to be a paranormal investigator or reader or something of that nature stated, basically, that ghosts weren't necessarily spiritual beings that interacted with their surroundings because of some sort of awareness, but imprints left behind by some extreme emotive behavior immediately prior to death. So, if a person was tortured and died at that scene, his residual energy would be maintained in such a way that people who ended up in the same environment would experience, in some way, that feeling.

So, do I believe in spirits that will lick and slime me, or ones that are friendly, pale children who only want companionship? I'm agnostic but leaning on the side of "no." However, I wouldn't put it past nature to allow for the above explanation.

My sister's car is supposedly haunted (confirmed by multiple sources), as was a store she worked at (confirmed by her coworkers), and the Spaghetti Warehouse downtown (confirmed by the Internet and many others).

I'll believe it when I see it.

I have to say your poll is slightly biased. It gives me the choice of saying whether ghosts are real or not but it only allows me to say dragons are real if ghosts are not.

warning...wall of text to follow...

the number of things I've experienced in my life would take days to type out, so I'll just stick to the highlights. Ever since I was born I've dealt with paranormal stuff in some form or another. The house that I grew up in for the first 12 or so years of my life was a farm house in western NY that dated back to the 1800's, and i remember a lot of the things that my family dealt with. We believe that the house was part of the underground railroad, because that went right through the area that we lived in. We had all kinds of activity, to the point where it was disturbing.
My family was catholic, so we had crucifixes and such throughout the house, and there were times that we would come home and every single one was turned upside down on the walls. There was a night that my aunt was staying with us, sleeping on the couch, and she woke up to see a black figure hovering over her. She screamed and my father ran downstairs to see what was happening, it turned and looked at him and he said it was like his entire body froze, then it turned, floated down the hall, and vanished. There was always a feeling that something was watching us, and eventually my parents decided that with the severity of things happening we needed to have a prayer group do a deliverance on the house.
They ended up having to do it twice because the first time everyone in the group was struck by a blinding migraine while they were praying, they ended up having to take turns laying hands on each other to pray for each other so they could make it through it. After that the majority of disturbing things stopped, but there were always still strange things happening, things would disappear and reappear a week later in plain sight. We were eating dinner one night and kept hearing thuds, but we figured it was our cats. Well we kept hearing them so finally we went to check what was going on and we found our huge lantern flashlight dismantled and laid out in a straight line along the floor. A lot of poltergeist type activity.
Also there's a place in western NY called the Van Horn Mansion, and it was reputed to be haunted by the spirit of a girl who was murdered in the house. People would see her in the upstairs window, walking across the road late at night, things like that. Well they did tours of this house a lot, and my family went on one because I wanted to, ever since living in that house I've been fascinated by the paranormal. I didn't see anything but there was one room upstairs that was supposedly her bedroom, and i could not for the life of me bring myself to cross the threshold of that room. I had never felt anything like it before. (on a side note they ended up finding human remains in the yard of the house that were identified as the girl and given a proper burial, since then there has been no recorded activity in the mansion)

TL:DR I've seen a lot in my life, and I remain fascinated by it to this day. Hey you know what could be fun? get a bunch of escapists together, believers and skeptics alike, and book us a tour of this place sometime next year.

I do because I've seen one... I'm not crazy, I swear... I'm not going to go out and buy that Ghostwire game, though, because I believe my old house was legitimately haunted... I'm not crazy.

Nope.

Anything is possible, however, and until science proves they don't exist, I won't be 100% certain.
There are a lot of things science can't prove exists, but they know for a fact that it's there. That's how they can tell where far away planets are and exactly how big they are and even what they're made of. And if they're wrong... lots of money down the drain. But so far they've been pretty accurate as far as I can tell.
