First Official Green Lantern Trailer Falls to Earth

Green Lantern is looking like a fun movie, but don't expect many surprises from it.

Snippets [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105280-Snippets-of-Footage-Give-First-Look-at-Green-Lantern-Movie] are all well and good, but there's nothing quite like that first trailer to really get those excitement levels really rising. Warner Bros. released the first official Green Lantern trailer yesterday, giving us a proper look at its "above-average Joe becomes super-powered space cop" movie.

The trailer gives a more complete picture of the kind of character Ryan Reynolds is playing, as well as the general shape of the movie's plot. Hal Jordan is a talented, but irresponsible, test pilot who is granted fantastic powers that he doesn't think that he is able to handle. But with time, training, and pep talks from his childhood sweetheart, he is able to overcome his fears and become truly worthy of the Green Lantern mantle. It's not the most original plot, but this is a summer blockbuster we're talking about, not the next Citizen Kane, so that's probably not that big a deal.

Green Lantern fans will probably notice a few differences from how Hal Jordan is portrayed in the comics, but most people won't have ever heard of him, so having a character the audience will like and relate to is likely a lot more important to the filmmakers than staying 100% true to the comic books.

The CGI definitely does look unpolished though, especially on Reynolds' suit, which looks more like it's been painted over the top of him, rather than something he's actually wearing - not entirely surprising, as this is exactly what has happened. Hopefully it'll get some touching up before the movie hits in June, because if it looks a little weird on a PC monitor, it's going to look very weird on a movie screen.

Green Lantern comes to theaters on June 17th, 2011.

Eh. The trailer doesn't look fantastic. The CG does look kinda goofy. I might see it. I'm undecided.

MAN-CRUSH TIME!!!!!!!!

With that out of the way....

I hope the movie is more epic than the trailer. Still interesting, though.

Unfortunately, this has become the dominant paradigm for superhero movies. It would be nice to, for once, actually be able to expect surprises, and even then be surprised...

I an all honesty I like Ryan Reinolds, he's a great actor. And at the end of Wolverine I was like "they should make a Deadpool with him" and seeing as they are, means directors like him too.

He honestly seems more Kyle Rayner, personality wise, than Hal Jordan, making me wonder why they didn't just go with Kyle. Although I guess Kyle's origin coming in the wake of the Hal Jordan/Parallax/Emerald Twilight fracas would be just a little difficult to encapsulate in a movie.

So yeah, while there's no way I'm not seeing this movie, I'm not going to be setting my expectations terribly high.

I like it. It showed Hector Hammond, Sinestro, Kilowog, Carol Ferris, Tomar-Re, Oa, Abin-sur...has giant green fists coming out of rings (ok, that sounded bad)and military aircraft! From a comic book nerd point of view that´s pretty awesome.

Sure, it starts kind of goofy, but in a cool Tony Stark kind of way...AND at the end with Oa and the other lanterns, i see a lot of potential. It could be Iron Man ramping up to be something like DC´s Star Wars...a weird mix, but one i think is kinda cool.

The thing that makes me confident about the movie is Martin Campbell. You cant go wrong with the man respnsible for making Bond awesome again.

I hope the movie is a hell of a lot better than that trailer. It failed to impress.

Ryan Reynolds acting looked crap, and it looked like the movie was chasing cheap gags instead of going for depth.

While Reynolds doesn't inspire me with confidence that he can pull this off, it's the writers and casting I'm really worried about:

-Loving the female version of Keanu Reeves, a wonderfully emotionless: "Hal. Today's. Test. Is. Important." almost as good as the Spiderman 3 news caster. God awful.

-The nerdy best friend? Come on man, I know many of the heroes in this universe have alliterative names but seriously, is there a trope less trodden that we can turn to?

But it'll have money showered over it like a hose on dirty children, I'm sure they can spend away the glaring issues...

I'm a fan of Ryan Reynolds and Superhero films so I probably would have gone to see this anyway. Judging by the trailer, they seem to be aiming more for Iron Man rather then Batman with a much lighter tone. (Not that I think this is a bad thing, I prefer Iron Man :) )

You know what, I'm not minding the costume as much anymore. Here's hoping for another Iron Man!

[sub][sub]The trailer wasn't the greatest but quite frankly my standards were set a bit low.[/sub][/sub]

Am I the only one that actually likes the suit? I mean it looks pretty much like a tight fitting thing.
