Angry Birds: Coming Soon To A Theater Near You

Rovio wants to be the next Pixar. An otherwise inexplicable Angry Birds feature film is the first step in that plan.

Actually, that upcoming Angry Birds movie is step two in the plan. Step one would be hiring David Maisel to advise the casual games publisher on its burgeoning Hollywood stardom.

If you don't spend your brunch hours reading the trades, you may not recognize Maisel's name, but if you've been to a theater anytime in the last decade you've likely seen the impact he's had on the movie making biz.

David Maisel was the key figure in the creation of Marvel Studios, the production company responsible for almost all of the awesome superhero flicks of the recent past. Rovio execs hope Maisel can create the same sort of business model for them, and turn the gaming firm into "another Pixar."

To that end, Rovio has been busy scooping up animation talent. The firm bought Finnish animation studio Kombo last month, and immediately tasked the animators with creating animated vignettes based on the Angry Birds universe.

"We're building a media company and have always been interested in moving further into the entertainment space, but we are taking it one step at a time so that we can use our strength to build an important entertainment presence from outside of the major studios," Rovio CEO Mikael Hed told Variety.

You have to respect the ambition, but does anyone else think Rovio is punching well above their weight class here? In sum, the company has had one hit game to date, has never offered any evidence that it knows how to craft a coherent story in any medium, and utterly lacks experience with any aspect of film making.

Yet Rovio hopes to rival Pixar.

Honestly, this is just so ballsy that it broke any kind of cynicism I might have had. I hope this Angry Birds movie wins the Academy Award for best picture and makes scads of cash. I wanna see world leaders meeting with men in foam bird costumes to discuss policy ideas. I wanna see jackbooted, Rovio-branded paramilitary corporations quelling riots in Mogadishu.

It's Rovio's world, you just live here.

And yet it will fail.

Unless Pixar continues a downward spiral, which I'm fairly confident is largely confined to Cars. And even then, Pixar is incredibly competent.

Or if they continue the Toy Story franchise. That would be a heartbreaker.

As long as they hire some talent, this might work out for them. I don't think it will be "rivaling Pixar" but it would probably generate a good amount of revenue because it is already a popular name. I don't know many people that haven't heard of Angry Birds.

Oooookay. The game is fun and all, but a movie... really?

I guess there's technically no reason it can't be good, but, well... really?

Gotta give it to them, they've got stones the size of melons. Angry Birds was charming and cute, but I really don't see how they can justify hopping mediums after only one game under their belt. Wouldn't it make more sense to establish themselves firmly in gaming before going into movies like Ubisoft's doing?

I really wish they would make something else than Angry Birds. Of course it's nice to see a Finnish company do well, but the birds is all they do. Use the money you're making to create something new, please. Something original would be great, instead of just taking a random free flash game from the internet and changing the graphics.

Yeah, that's what I figured this thread would be about. But I suppose that's pretty old news already.

This certainly isn't helping that stupid stereotype that all game developers really want to work in Hollywood.

I'd laugh really hard if this fell flat before it really got off the ground. Most movie adaptations of video games have been failures, with only a couple ever rising to being fairly decent (I think Prince of Persia wasn't terrible, there may be a couple other examples).

But I guess the Halo movie gave us District 9, one of my favorite movies ever, so what the heck. Give it a go.

If Valve or Blizzard wanted to move into animation and become the next Pixar I'd believe it. But Rovio? I'm just not seeing it, and what's the point in buying other animation companies to move into this field? I suppose it means they want to be a diverse entertainment company, but it still seems like a strange move.

*Ahem. Rovio? You're not as cool as you think you are. You made one popular mobile game that'll be completely forgotten in another month or two.

I remember there being a parody video of a Angry Birds movie. I honestly can't remember who did it. Anyway, seriously, why?

Tom Hanks seems to believe they are continuing it.

The reason why Animation studios fail to compete with Pixar is that Pixar take their viewers seriously, they write deep and involving stories with actually interesting characters that even an adult would appreciate (with the glaring exception of the cars movies), other Animation studios write straight-forward stories, filled with silly gags and some pop culture references with the excuse of "Meh it's a kids movie lets not take it too seriously" the only movie that almost reached the Pixar level was How to train your Dragon.

So, really cannot see that with Rovio so no they don't even have a chance.

That picture looks a lot like crush the castle.
Is that what angry birds is a clone of?

Well I know you made over 70mil on that flash game, but movies are a whole new thing and I can't see this being a more then shits and grins kind of short movie for the YouTube channels.

But hey surprise me
