Modern Warfare 3 Ditches Commando Perk


Long distance stabbing will be a lot more difficult in the next Call of Duty game.

As part of an effort to tweak the melee mechanics for Modern Warfare 3, Infinity Ward has decided to leave the tier 3 perk Commando, which let players make melee attacks from a much greater distance, out of the game.

Responding to a fan on Twitter who asked about Modern Warfare 3's melee combat, Infinity Ward's creative strategist Robert Bowling said that it had been rebalanced from MW2 and that Commando would not be making an appearance. He didn't reveal any further details, however, saying that people would just have to wait and see.

As is the way with online games, people soon found all kinds of tricks they could exploit in Modern Warfare 2, and the Commando perk was no different. Player often combined it with perks like Marathon, which allowed players to sprint indefinitely, and equipment like the Tactical Knife, which allowed players to make quicker melee attacks, to create custom melee classes that could roam the map at top speed, leaping at other players and killing them with a single hit. These combinations drew the ire of other players, which presumably is what led to Infinity Ward removing the perk.

This is a perfect example of what Bowling was talking about when he said that Infinity Ward welcomes negative feedback [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/111959-Modern-Warfare-3-Dev-Welcomes-Negative-Feedback]. It's not hard to imagine that the studio - and probably Bowling himself - received a ton of complaints from people who had had their fun ruined by would-be ninjas who had brought a rather effective knife to a gun fight.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 comes out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 8th.

This I would not agree with, because tubes serve a tactical purpose of clearing out enemies in cover. If someone can hit you with a tube grenade in the open, chances are good they could just have hit you with regular bullets anyway - you weren't quick enough on the draw.

The only thing I'd say is to remove the ability to replenish your tube grenades with Scavenger, limiting you to 1 or 2 per life which makes conservation an issue.

I never understood how not wearing underwear allowed you to leap greater distances. I suppose it is less restrictive.

I'm glad they're addressing certain issues, but with so many perks it's impossible to balance right. They should have just stuck with pre made classes.

Commando/marathon perk users didn't really annoy me, they're just players who used perks how they are supposed to be used- to maximise their ability in a certain game-play strategy. It's like how a sniper may use that perk to hold breaths for longer and ghost-pro.

What does annoy me however, on black ops, is second chance users. The trouble is that when you kill them first time round they are briefly invulnerable to bullets until they hit the floor. The game mechanic needs to be tweaked.

Good, commando was fucking annoying.

As long as they keep UAV Jammer/Camouflage/Cold Blooded/Ghost or some other variant of the anti-radar perk, I'll be happy.

I agree with this, that stupid knife drives me crazy.

At least make it a two hit kill, this ridiculous ability for players to get accidental kills by squeezing the analogue stick too hard has to go.

I'd like the removal of ALL perks completely. NO classes, no bonuses, nothing. Just accurate weapons that everyone can use.

Will be missed, loved that perk, was the best way of releasing steam on multiplayer that I'd ever found!

I think they have to decide the purpose of having the knife in at all.

As I see it, there are two reasons to keep it. The first is for stealth kills, so that a player that sneaks up on someone else has a certain kill on them. The second is to avoid fiddly close-quarters gunfights, which rely more on ping and blind luck than skill or planning. I think the best way to avoid those situations would be to cause two players that get too close to each other or run into each other to enter a sort of minigame where they have to grapple with each other or something to win the knife fight.

That way, it's not always the person with the 5-button mouse and the lower ping that wins.

NINJA'D! Great. Just friggin' great.
At least, they took out Juggernaut from the normal perks but put it back as Painkiller, which is even more overpowered because of the dick-nipples spawn system.
If they take it out altogether, I'll be happy for the people who buy the game: at least IW will be cutting them some slack.

Juggernaut hasn't been in the game since W@W, and I'm assuming it won't make a reappearance (though Painkiller was in MW2... That was a bit shit).
Though I quite like using ghost pro, it's not like it makes you invulnerable like second chance does (although, using ghost pro with a silencer makes you fucking invisible unless there's a blackbird).

Shrug. Nobody will ever be totally happy with CoD.
