New Star Trek Series Pitch Approaches Warp Speed

1947 Entertainment owner David Foster thinks it's time for Star Trek to come back to the small screen.

It's been a few years since the last time a new Star Trek: The Next Generation [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Original-Seasons-Blu-ray/dp/B002PQ7JQK/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1314283577&sr=8-15], which revived the Trek franchise in 1987 and lasted for seven seasons of its own.

But if Foster has his way, yet another Trek series will be on the air soon. He's been working on an idea for a new Star Trek series since 2006 and things are apparently now at the point where he's just about ready to make an official pitch to CBS.

"The series concept is fully developed, subject to change of course, with a solid 5-7 year series plan, pilot script and a conceptualized finale that intends to define Star Trek for generations, extensive character bios, costume and ship/set designs, and more," he said at the 2011 Star Trek Convention [http://creationent.com/cal/stlv.htm] in Las Vegas. "This is a drastic departure from the typical 8-10 page treatment of the previously pitched Star Trek series ideas that have not included even a pilot script."

Foster's plan is to set the new series in a post-Star Trek [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Next-Generation-Complete/dp/B000RZIGVS/ref=sr_1_12?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1314284019&sr=1-12] film, which he views as an "alternate canon," but will instead stick to the "positive view of the future" as envisioned by Gene Roddenberry in the original Star Trek and TNG series. Not that the galaxy will be the happiest place ever; Foster said the Klingons in his series are growing tired of having to rely on the Federation for support following the Praxis incident [look it up, non-nerds] while the Ferengi have stumbled upon some kind of new resource that has given them a windfall of wealth and power.

"Numerous individuals with Star Trek experience are supporting our endeavor with encouragement and advisory roles, including prior producers, visual effects, script writers, and more," Foster said. "We are currently working on obtaining the right executive producer for the series, and have passed on requests by a couple of interested parties."

Is the world ready for a new Star Trek series? Following the collapse of Enterprise and the box office failure of Star Trek: Nemesis [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Nemesis-Two-Disc-Collectors/dp/B000A6T1KE/ref=sr_1_3?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1314284196&sr=1-3], the feeling seemed to be that the viewing public had had its fill of boldly going where no-one had gone before. But then J.J. Abrams blew the lid off things with his 2009 Star Trek reboot, which proved that the franchise could attract a mainstream audience. Foster appears ready to follow the same path; he said the series will be "highly-energized with a much younger cast, and uses cutting-edge future technologies with newly-envisioned special effects and designs."

So what say you, Trekkers? Does this sound like a good idea, or does the thought of a new Trek series make you want to go looking for your Firefly [http://www.amazon.com/Firefly-Complete-Blu-ray-Nathan-Fillion/dp/B001EN71CW/ref=sr_1_2?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1314284256&sr=1-2] DVD set?

"original series roots in big and mighty ways." "positive view of the future" "highly-energized with a much younger cast, and uses cutting-edge future technologies with newly-envisioned special effects and designs."
Sounds good. I'll definitely check it out. But I'm curious how contemporary this star trek's vision of the future will be. Cause the old ones feel a bit dated.

Hmmm...

Strange feeling about this...it's like if the Ferengi had discovered oildilithium reserves and the Klingons didn't want the UNFederation Council involved...

But that would be crazy to mix fantasy and reality like that...

Of course, if they actually go back to the original title sequence and not that god-awful Enterprise garbage, they might win a few fans back. And you know they're going to redo the Decontamination Gel scene.

What would really be a good idea is to bring back series that hadn't received that treatment so far...like Blake's 7, Firefly, Space:Above and Beyond, Babylon 5, The Twilight Zone, Space 1999, Sliders, The Outer Limits, Logan's Run, Andromeda, Lexx, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, Lost in Space, Nowhere Man, The Greatest American Hero, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Earth: Final Conflict, Farscape, Max Headroom, Star Cops, The Tomorrow People, Eureka, Terrahawks, Fireball XL5...

Just a thought.

Well there is this mess: http://www.starshipfarragut.com/Episodes.php

I'll give them a B for effort but the execution just isn't there.

Sure, but if they try to appeal to the Abrams Star Trek fans they better hire a bunch of pretty boy actors, stock up on lens flares, buummmm bum bummm soundtracks, shiny materials and keep their expectations on the lowest shelf. Popcorn movie goers are not likely to watch a Star Trek show each week.

If it's less like voyager and more like DS9, it might be alright. A post Dominion war narrative would be refreshing. Cardassia destroyed, The Klingons crippled. A true cold war between the Romulans and the Federation.

Anything with Roddenberry's original concept as the starting point sounds like a good idea. I really didn't like Abrams' film at all.
And hey, maybe we can finally get that QLGBT character Seven of Nine was supposed to be?

Speaking of...no mention of Voyager in the timeline described in the first paragraph?

I'm certainly not opposed to a new Star Trek series, and setting it post-Voyager is wonderful news. However I'll remain firmly skeptical until I learn more about the project, Star Trek has burned me several times recently.

I do wonder if he will set it after Star Trek Online or will declare all of that non-canon.
We can only hope they declare it non-canon. I don't want the Enterprise H to be a Dervish class ship, or an upside down Voyager.

Maybe. I'm sure i'll check it out. I was actually interested in seeing more stuff set in the abramsverse. I'm a pretty big star trek fan, but i think the original canon has grown too big and unwieldy for the average viewer.

I'm certainly ready for more Star Trek and if it gets the best of the TNG/DS9 in with more recent scifi TV shows and the spirit of the TOS it'll be great. That's one heck of a balancing act though, but I'm going to be optimistic.

I can't believe I forgot Voyager. That is seriously damaging to my nerd cred.

THIS.

STO's ships and space combat look terrible. which is a shame; totally killed my excitement about the game. you can't make a star trek franchise with terrible ships.

Sounds like this guy has done the footwork, and heck he has done more technical planning than all the movies combined, i would not mind seeing him get this on air.

But star trek is so all over the map now days, rodenberry was seen as a guy that pushed peoples buttons, broke barriers, he wrote a lot of brainy scifi, and he wrote some good action scifi, tng and even ds9 were more in the rodenberry line, voyager was just a utter mess, enterprise i liked it alot actually, far more than ds9 and voyager.

New trek the tng movies and beyond sofar have been utter garbage, no respect for canon, even in the characters, the stories or the lore, the new reboot well it was nice looking and hip but far as scifi goes it was about as vapid as you could get and in parts downright stupid.

TOS and TNG were the series rodenberry had almost total control over, and yes they were not perfect, but there is alot there to look at, the best trek should make you think, the best scifi in general should make you think.

Don't worry, Voyager was terrible anyways (only the theme of Enterprise makes it worse than Voyager), and it is probably better off being stripped of its canon status.

I welcome this with open arms as long as JJTrek is treated as an alternative universe in this.

In fact, i am now so hyped i could snort my Wrath of Khan DVD.
