90's music compared to today's

There is definitely some shit from the 90s we've done well to forget.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf6yeH5x9fI (It's not a Rick Roll, although you may wind up wishing it were...)

However, a lot of what I was listening to in the 90s has held up, and I think it will in the years to come. On the whole, mainstream music in the 90s was better, at least as far as I'm concerned. Tards! At The Disco or Coldplay or Deathcab for Cutie or any one of a number of other acts from this decade probably have less staying power than an 18 year old virgin.

This does not mean, of course, that there is a dearth of music from this decade. It just gets lost in the white noise getting pumped at you. Frankly, Iron & Wine or Audioslave or Velvet Revolver have done some good stuff (although there is a lot of 80s and 90s heritage in there, so maybe that's why I like them) this decade, as have Wolfmother. Although, looking through my music collection on my computer, there really isn't much that started this decade.

Emo shit can piss right off, though. Whiny little fuckers. Dashboard Confessional can fuck right off. Look for The Emo Song on YouTube. That about sums it up.

I doubt I'm going to convince anyone to change their mind about this, and I'm not going to worry about it. I'll take what's good and do my best to forget about the bad.

And just a side note about the 90s... that decade gave us Britney. So not everything was good about it.

I have this strange feeling that as the decades progress, The bar for when music went to shit is gonna move along with the times. I recall my parents and an Uncle saying that the 80s was the end of the good music. I put the bar at 1995; there you had your N*SYNC and your Backstreet Boys and your Jay-Z fucking up what is otherwise an honorable set of genres.

Then again, some of Dissection's releases were in that period so I don't know. Wait now I have it.

I think it varies from genre to genre. Rap went to shit after Tupac and Biggie were offed. Punk went to shit around that time thanks to Kurt killing himself (inb4 hurr courtney love hurr durr). However, the 90's was the growth of Death and Black Metal after the death of hair metal with some *ahem* other genres that I don't particularly like, gaining popularity. Another negative is Metallica, which was very influential, and Megadeth, not as influental but still a worthwhile example, going mainstream. Much of what they've produced sans Megadeth's two most recent albums and Death Magnetic (Possibly) Has been shit.

But really one can never really find the real line of shttiness.
Metallica are getting old. Just take a look at lars, He is forty fucking six.

Of course the music won't be the same..
That's not my point. Would you like to say something about my point?

Oh God, the 90s by a landslide! Whats the best song to come out after the year 2000?

Every decade had a whole heap of crap artists but so many great songs were released in the 90's.

Anyone can make music. VERY few of us can make great music. Each decade has a few gems but the rest is filler. You favourite is normally influenced by what you grew up with. Thats why I listen to a lot of 80's and 90's stuff.

I still like some stuff today. The newest parkway drive for example. But I love earlier stuff like Priest, Maiden, Pantera. The OP is right about Alice in Chains, I wish Id seen them with Lane Staley.

I dont get some of the newer bands, time will tell whether its my age or theyre just trast that will be forgotten, Metro station, Medina Lake, MCR, youmeatsix, boyslikegirls, enter shikari. Id put a fiver on me being right though...

Emo kids are individuals, just like all of their friends with identi kit skinny jeans/fringes.

90's music absolutely sucked. 60's, 70's and 80's were all awesome, and modern music is also great. But 90's was terrible. If anyone can find a way of erasing it from my memory, I will make you a millionaire.

Losing My Religion - R.E.M.
One - U2
November Rain - Guns N Roses
Paranoid Android - Radio Head
Wonderwall - Oasis
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
Closer - NIN
Sabotage - Beastie Boys
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine
Enter Sandman - Metallica

And there is probably a shit load more of great songs I have forgotten!

Which of these suck? They are 10 times better than anything released after 2000!

Okay, Losing My Religion is good, but the rest aren't great.

It's all a question of personal taste.

Music int he 90s wasn't nearly as overproduced as today. The mid-late nineties is also when true indie was flourishing. Stuff today is just a little too packaged for the most part.

I guess the 90s was kinda when this glossy pop shit started though.

And oh yeah, MTV still played music. Before the dark times. Before "The Real World". (which was incidentally OK up until the "Real World Seattle" when they just tried to start shit between everyone in the house).

I actually worked with RW Seattle's "Irene" a few years after that show aired. She was as dumb as a box of nails. She did tell me something interesting, though. She said the real reason she quit the show was because she was unhappy with how MTV played everyone against each other.

Save a few bands (Rage for the most part) I'd say that the 90s was probably the worst decade for music since records began (60s).

60s: Awesome pop bands (Beatles, Animals, etc) and Protest Folk (Dylan, Ochs)
70s: Groovy baby and the screaming birth of punk
80s: Best pop music ever
90s: Grunge

Well thats the thing, the rest are great and Smells Like Teen Spirit is said to be one of the greatest!

Personal taste or not, alot of interesting songs were released during the 90s and I don't like them all but I can appreciate the accomplishments.

I listen to music ranging from the 20's to today, so I think it's safe to say that I don't think either decade is better, they just have focal points upon different genres.
