Xbox Live Beta Testers Get Accidental Peek at Mass Effect 3

Leaked beta footage suggests that BioWare's newest title replaces easy/normal/hard with action/story/RPG.

For a short time on Xbox Live, gamers beta testing the new Xbox dashboard were mistakenly given access to a private beta of Mass Effect 3. Though Microsoft realized and remedied the mistake quickly, multiple users were able to download the 1.8GB package before it was pulled.

Mass Effect 3 producer Jesse Houston responded to the leak on the official BioWare forum. "As most of you know by now," he wrote, "this evening an accidental leak occurred of some early Mass Effect 3 beta code. "

"We'd like to stress that the leaked code is in a rough, unfinished state and was not meant for public release," Houston continued. "The content is not final, and is not reflective of the quality of the finished, polished game due for release on March 6, 2012."

While the mechanics and graphics may not yet be final, solid game information was still released that presumably won't change before players get their mitts on it. Screenshots and videos of the beta have already begun circulating through the internet, revealing multiplayer character creation, stats screens, and mission segments. Also outlined were the three game modes, including Action, Story, and RPG mode.

The beta describes "Action mode" as being "for those who want to emphasize action and combat and minimize story management. Action mode will set automatic replies in conversation and a normal difficulty."

"Story mode" will be "for those who want to emphasize story immersion and minimize combat pressure. Story mode will set manually-selectable replies in conversation and a minimal combat difficulty."

And finally, "RPG mode" is "for those who want to explore both realms of story and combat. RPG mode will set manually-selectable replies in conversation and a normal combat difficulty."

While these three new modes are a clever twist on the usual easy, normal, and hard settings we're used to, I think it's more demonstrative of an attempt by BioWare to placate as many fans of its popular Mass Effect series as possible. The first Mass Effect's design heavily embraced a bevy of RPG elements, while the second moved to streamline them for a more visceral shooter-style combat. It seems as though BioWare may now be trying to accomidate both styles with these new modes, but we'll only know if it worked (or was actually included at all) come March of next year when the final version of the game is released.

"Oh no, we've accidentally given some people a sneak peek at something we can now change, and will increase hype over ME3!"

How could that happen?

So "RPG" mode is basically normal mode, just like the previous two games, and the other two settings are just easy modes in a slightly different way.

I'm disappointed honestly. I would have expected story mode to offer a new form or extended story immersion tailored towards hardcore story and lore fans (same goes for the other two difficulties) not just a regular version of what was already there with everything else cut down.

The action mode sounds like it defeats the purpose of the game. Why would I want to play a sub par version of gears of war if I couldn't choose what dialogue to say.

There is nothing standout about Mass Effect's shooting gameplay. Removing the story options from it just kills it more.

I'll stick with RPG mode thank you.

I don't doubt that there'll be regular difficulty settings as well, especially for RPG and Action modes. They've had multiple difficulty settings in the past two games; why would they just casually throw that aside for the third?

Also, yeah, I'm sticking with RPG Mode to continue the whole Mass Effect experience.

I don't have a problem with this as I'll just use RPG mode in the first place.

I just hope the other difficulty modes are still in there somewhere as normal mode on the Mass Effect games are easy as hell.

Increase hype? Sir, you will not be able to see the hype from the size of the shitstorm the Action Mode be conjurin' up. Unjustifiably so too, since nothing is being cut out and the people who are buying for the story (ala 90% of people buying) have the RPG mode. But, loads of people will ignore this, and there will be much excrement whirling about at high velocities.

Note: I do not condone people who skip the story of mass Effect. Those people are rather unintelligent.

Soooo...Action is for the FPS fans, Story is for the FPS haters, and RPG is just the normal mode that all the games have had so far...

*Facepalm*...feels like Bioware actually took a step BACK in progress this time. Honestly I think it MIGHT be what ruins the final game (or at least one of it's flaws), since it now shows that they're trying more to appease EVERYONE, and less about trying to make a awesome sequel that appeases the original fans who did flock out en'masse to buy ME1 and ME2.

Don't get me wrong, I have faith, and I'll still probably go out and buy the game to see how it all ends. But hopefully Bioware didn't make any mistakes by trying to appeal to everyone at once, which would prevent them from making a single solid game focus.

"Accidental," huh...

Automatic replies, though? Surely that's what's rather appealing about Mass Effect? The fact that it ISN'T like almost every other game out there when it comes to crafting your own character and story? Fair play for trying to bring in more fans, but... hmm.

Interesting idea, but I can't help get the feeling that the action mode would be locking off content compared to the other modes.

They are appeasing everyone in a way that doesn't cut out features for the core group, such as how streamlining does? HOW DARE THEY!

No, but Bethesda luckily will be able to now. For free. Hmmm. It's almost as if this was beneficial to them.

I wish there was a mode called "fun" ... because that was sorely lacking in ME2
