I guess you know the sorceress' breasts were parody when the webcomic making fun of them draw them smaller than they are instead of larger. And they still look huge.

I was actually gonna comment on the same thing. In japanese anime culture in these type of things there's always a short breasted female character and she is treated as a sex tool as much as any other character. She is basically there for the loli fans.

How accurate is this joke?

No, I'm not going to buy this game if it features lots of breasts. I can see all the on-screen breasts I want at work.
The sorceress is WAY overrepresented in the gameplay videos I've seen so far. She's basically the Ken of Dragon's Crown.

OT: And here I thought this comic was going to have something to do with Erin eating chicken. Way to prove me wrong and still deliver.

I must have really been messed up. I just kept thinking that I need to get muscles to have women like me like AC Slater had in Saved By the Bell.

And not for nothing, but girls were pretty average size in the 80's. Thank God for Force Fed Hormones in our food!

What I think is ridiculous about every discussion about the game is that everyone points out at the Sorceress and casually say "this is misogynist". Except it is a game that is at the same time parodying and playing up fantasy tropes, most of all the "heroic aesthetic" of Conan or fantasy staples. The Fighter isn't simply a warrior, he is tall, strong and covered in a ridiculous tonnage of armor. The dwarf is a complete muscle fetishist from head to toe. The sorceress is the embodiment of the buxom witch (heck, she has her top on, unlike actual buxom witches in heroic fantasy). The Amazon draws from godamn GREEK ideals of athleticism. The Elf's build denotes nimbleness. My only problem is the mage. Going all out on the fantasy tropes would mean him to be the bearded "Gandalf type", but since they're playing to youth as a heroic ideal... it is more your manga-style wizard, cool and brooding. ugh.

So they have two female overly sexualized characters and two male overly sexualized characters all withing the heroic aesthetic. As far as designs goes, that seem fair to me. The three females have radically different body types, which I recall was one of the problems with this kind of sexualization. That's certainly better than most (well, pretty much all) fighting games.

I haven't played the game. I'm still waiting for any conclusive feel of how the game is before I make this decision and even then I'm not running to buy on the spot. Maybe the game is entirely about the Sorceress getting into porn situation and every word out of her mouth is a blowjob euphemism. It doesn't matter. Aesthetically, I see no problem. In fact, aesthetically, I find the elf prettier because I favor small breasts (and even then there's nothing on this world that'd steer me from playing the mage if I ever play this game), and I'm sure the same is true for a lot of women about the mage. If the game then goes on to be misogynist on a narrative level it is a complete different problem. Unless, maybe, while still following the same fantasy tropes, but only if they keep the same fairness and the women have the same sexual opportunities or fall into the same sexual situation as the men.

After read Grey's twitter I figured we'd be getting one of these soon. I forgot that the elf was the most proportioned one of all the characters. Is it even a fun game, should I check it out? I hear Odin's Sphere was cool with some neat artwork.
Check the review section. Escapist covered it just recently, and thankfully it doesn't dwell on the whole boobage scene. Like all Vanillaware games, the scenery was breathtaking.

I shouldn't need to explain that the male characters are NOT sexualized. They're idealized as part of a male power fantasy. THEY ARE NOT designed to appeal to women. There are plenty of reasons to defend Dragon's Crown's stylistic choices, chief amongst them being the awesome technical prowess of the Vanillaware art team, but the whole "the men are sexualized too!" argument is bullshit and you know it.

As for the Amazon drawing from Greek ideals, debatable. The ideal greek form had wide hips (check), defined musculature (check), correct fat proportions (nope) and small breasts (hell to the fucking nope). I personally adore the design, it's exaggerated to the point of freakishness, which I like, but I can see why others take issue.

Finally. No one is calling the game misogynist. They ARE calling it "sexist." Which is a fair cop, the game's female characters are treated differently from the male characters, just look at the poses. You can argue that this is because the game is drawing from sexist influences (Frazetta et al) and recognizing these influences is good, but it doesn't make the final product any less sexist.

You know, I was not sure who I was going to play. Now it is either Sorceress or Amazon.

I always find it funny how games must have freedom of expression and how they don't encourage or makes us insensitive to violence and how they depic FANTASTIC situations.

But goddamn if it is a male fantasy envisioned by the artist (which is different from the producers demanding it for marketing). How dare they express their desires?! Surely the game will fabricate rapists and pigs.

I am not against gender neutral games or female fantasy games. I think we should have more of them because there isn't enough of them. What pisses me off is all the name calling (sexistsexistsexistsexist) that is a form of censoring through shame.

With that being said, I found the character designs to be silly to the point that is a PARODY of male fantasy. How exactly the fighter and the dwarf uphold their torsos in such tiny legs? And how many steroids they have eaten?

Yeah, I fully expect the sorceress to be common in multiplayer for assorted reasons. Sadly(?), I'll prolly be one of them. I like boobs, and feel no shame in that, but I like necromancy, too. I'm interested in how the game will handle it.
Doesn't mean I won't diversify my playing, but I'll want to be a potent sorceress first.

Awesome comic series, by the way. I've been a mostly silent fan for a long time.

Screenshot or it didn't happen. Kidding. Kidding.

You have made an excellent point here. Big boobs (both real and artificial) do exist. Does the creator of said large boobs (be he/she real or artiifical) deserve criticism? If so, all big-breast-hating critics please turn to your God, evolution or a plastic surgeon with your sternly waggling fingers! Do it for (and I quote) "The chiiiiiilllllddddrrreeennnn."

I like to think of "evolution" as a "she".

It's kinda funny to me that if you draw a sorceress with giant breasts, it is sexist. If you draw her with giant feet, it is received as just bad art. Well, I guess somewhere out in the foot fetish community, it would be received as sexist. Unless you drew the men with really big feet too.

ON TOPIC: Hillarious comic. Very true. Nicely drawn boobs. I'm not at all outraged at how big you drew them. I should proably be furious at the lack of feet.

The whole discussion around this game has really made my brain hurt. Not to mention my sister showed me that 'Hawkeye Initiative' and I just watched 'Redline' which added to the chain of reasoning in what i'm about to spew.

I agree it's not fair to hold different people to different standards, arguing that female characters can't be in leading roles because reasons and that any weird or outlandish female character designs need to be honed in to be more appealing is 10 levels of bullshit but if thats what an artist likes doing, is it really right to tell them otherwise?

I LIKE female characters with some actual bloody character, who arn't just 'the supporting role' and get just as many punches in as the guys but not everyone likes to make that sort of art. I just watched 'Redline' and loved it, it was campy/cheesy and all sorts of old school shounen fun but I know if my sister watched it all she'd see is that at the end of the movie Sonoshee is sitting on JP's lap, and she'd be right in saying that.

The same goes for the 'Hawkeye Initiative', I don't mind when guys get sexulised and I mean actually sexulised, i'm talking Free! here,

The 'Hawkeye Initiative' is stupidly funny to see but I do think it's a little misguilded. Comics are in the mainstream now and theres no problem with asking for more from a medium but asking an artist to make changes to his/her style seems counter productive. Its the design commities, testers and 'guys in suits' I have an issue with, as hipster-y as that sounds. Which is kind of stupid because I also understand its just part of buisness... I don't know.

Basically I think artists should just do what they want, and if you don't like it then it's just not for you. If an artist is willing to change it up a little for a new audience then great, if not move on.

I like you two on Critical Miss, you draw what you want and don't scared of anybody! Something I would like to see from all artists, even if the extent of that is drawing big ol'boobies.

I think it's funny that the elf is the only character that actually looks human.

Better yet, call a spinal surgeon so we can get that poor woman some help. Then perhaps a mammoplasty so she can live a normal life.
