Umm... Norse mythology?
No, its been done.
Three times in fact.
Too Human.
Age of Mythology.
Viking.

So sorry, but thanks for trying.

OT:
Hmm... not going to give it entirely away but...
to my knowledge there's been only one game in this universe, and it was pretty obscure so, this universe could still be explored in gaming:

I'm only given you two hints: Lovecraft and "Cthulhu Rylean Fhtaggen".

i think prehistoric times haven't been covered alot, and if they have they have been awful.

how about playing as a dinosaur, and earlier mammal like reptile, or after the dinosaurs, but before modern man? having them 3 choices, then playing out the lifestyle of an animal you choose, having conflict and survivability all rolled into one game...i'd play it ^_^

Velociraptor here i come!

Also id like a GOOD Medabot game =)
Doesn't Spore cover prehistoric time with the whole evolution thing? Unless less you mean earth only then ya it's a lowly used time period without temporal alterations or interferrence.

Still waiting for Steampunk or Clockpunk, though I'm almost 100% positive that there hasn't been a Clockpunk videogame yet.

Well.. I don't recall having a video game set during year 1?
Actraiser, Black & White, and basically any game where you get to make your own society/world. That's a Year 1 scenario. ^_^

I was going to say Egypt but I remember playing a game were the player was Donald duck and you had a plunger gun.

I can't think of one ... If I do, I shall edit this post and be triumphant! Muhaha.
Egypt also had the Pharoah series (series?, only played two) and featured in plenty of fanstasy/medieval RTSs e.g. Age of Empires.

Napoleon taking over half of Europe would be an interesting setting. Or the Mongol invasion of well...everywhere, though that might be tricky to make a game around.

While I'm not an evolutionist, how about fighting to get out of the primordial ooze? Proteins vs. amino acids?

An RPG in stone Age, if there is one, I would like to try it.
Or even earlier than that, a game where you're one of the monkey predecesors of the human race and have to fling from tree to tree searching for bananas and battling T-rexes. Awesome or what?
EVO search for eden. Back when enix had balls.

Its all been done, mang.

Conceptually, though, I've yet to see a truly alien landscape with zero references to or adaptations from local wildlife, in a location unrecognizable as a planetary body (no gravity just being the start) dealing with situations and characters that could only exist within this hypothetical landscape. All to tell a story in a completely non-linear fashion.

Billion bucks to the first person who makes that.
Well what would you do? FPS, Strategy, ect.

Agriculturepunk, Disco-Mesopatamia, Bright Purple Science Fiction, Orthogonal mangrove horror.

There are plenty of popular settings that haven't made it to video games yet.

I don't know if you'd count it but in Medieval Total War 2 there was a Mongol faction that you could play in custom battle mode. Someone probably made a custom campaign for them too.

A polynesia-like setting, through some space games are vaguely similar.

In the rare, but done category: anything with a Diesel Punk [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DieselPunk] setting. Bronze age, early iron age, and neolithic settings are also rather rare. There are probably parts of 'colonizing' the Americas (say, 1500-1850) that are done rarely or not all. Central, South, and Southeast Asia are also largely ignored. Ditto subsaharan Africa.

As for wars, anything more recent than WW2 gets only light coverage. Alternatively, some older ones might work. What games are set during or around, say, the Thirty Years War, or Great Northern War? Or for that matter, the Sino-Japanese or Russo-Japanese Wars? (Well, the later has been dealt with once or twice in naval games...)

edit: post Singularity settings haven't been done. ;)
