Cowboy Bebop. Also Black Lagoon. Okay, I admit, they're both violent crime/sci-fi action shows, but damn if they aren't good. Seriously, watch them anyway.

I am quite suprised that no-one has mentioned it so far but 'Fruits Basket' is a really good anime, I think it's SoL genre compared to the shows I normally watch. If you want a good manga to read while your bored on the internet go with red string at strawberry comics, I am absolutely hooked.

Ever since Gin made his first appearance in the Manga iv loved him.
And are you talking about Bleach:Shattered Blade?
Though Komamura is my top Favorite Bleach Character.
If so then Aw Yea.
I cant help but love that game.

I just love Nico...ever sence she first appeared as a Antagonist i just really liked her.
And as she was fleshed out i started to like her even more.
After her its Zolo, Buggy, and Luffy.
It was hard to choose them though, like you said, all the Characters are awesome.
Whitebeard is another favorite that i feel is a Given.
He is just so awesome.

Iv never read Kenichi or Fairy Tail.
Though just by looking at Fairy Tail it reminds me a lot of one Piece.

I try not to read online that much.
Bleach is the one one i really stay up to date on.
I just like owning a physical copy of whatever it is i like.
:p
Yeah, thats the game. its so damn awesome isn't it? I also fell in love with Grimmjows voice in the game... but when he came into the dubbed anime (or at least the dubbed part i've heard so far), i was a little dissapointed as he doesn't sound the same. to be fair though, i've only seen 2 episodes with him in xD

I like Nico's personality. Just so happy go lucky about everything, despite the fact that most people with a past like hers would just totally despair. But at the same time she's so cynical, yet sweet about it :D i think i'd have to pick my favourite characters as "the strawhat crew"... this turned out to be a big fan-wank, so i spoilered it as not everyone really cares. also, it probably does contain spoilers.
I'm really fond of Luffy, he's got that main-character "i'll never give up" syndrome but he's not cocky about it, like some other protaganists are. Plus, he always looks awesome. My favourite "drama" parts of one piece are where Luffy gets angry and punches someone, because he looks so so good when angry. I like Zolo too... haha, even though he's only cried once, he's quite deep but pretends to not be, and he has a genuine loyalty to Luffy that most people seem to forget about. Sanji is absolutely brilliant. the only non-weapon martial arts i've ever really been interested in are one where Legs are primarily used, such as Tae-kwondo (spelling -_-), and so watching Sanji fight is almost dreamy. I would say Nami's probably my least favourite, but then there are sections where she's just so untouchably awesome. She's physically the weakest member on the crew, but because of her knowledge, she's able to fully utilize that weather-making weapon of hers and make it genuinly deadly. Usopp, yes, he's comedy-relief, very flawed yet so undeniably epic. And he's got an amazing endurance too considering how "weak" he's supposed to be. The One piece movie "strong world" really highlighted that for me, when he was the only one still conscious after an attack that took out Luffy, Zolo, Sanji and Chopper. Moving onto Chopper, i've been attached to him since the snow island they recruited him on, his little backstory was the first piece of manga i'd read where i cried (and i haven't cried since... reading manga. Anime's can make me cry easier :p), and he's consistently made me feel emotional as he strives to become better.. I'm pretty sure i've only got 2 more characters left to describe now, but i'm not really sure where you are in the One Piece storyline, so i'm worried that talking about the other 2 people that have been recruited really could be a massive spoiler. one too big for spoiler tags

i'm not entirely sure if this is true, but i read somewhere that the people who drew DragonBallZ, One Piece and "rave master" used to all work underneath the same manga artist. The guy who did ravemaster moved on to do 'Monster Hunter orage' (a short manga series based upon my favourite game) and after that started Fairytail. I've used that to explain why all their senses of humour and artstyles are reminiscent of each other. as i said though, this is only a rumour that i heard from somewhere. Never seen ravemaster, but a few of my friends from school have said they have, and there are a lot of similarities in Fairytail.

Haha, its good that you don't read online too much. Owning a physical copy of the manga/anime means you are being 100% legal (assuming you paid full price for a non-pirate copy :p), whilst scanlations are very very vague when it comes to how legal they are. Thats why Onemanga recently shut down, and sites such as animeseason have been removing shows at the request of companies.
I'm quite well off, so i'm, to the best of my ability, purchasing Bleach DVD's and Manga books. my only problem is that living in the UK, they are barely ever released. Seriously, i go to other foreign countries in Europe and they are ahead of us by at least 5 volumes, with new releases promised... and i'm an addict now, i just want to keep as up to date as possible, anything i could get in England is pretty much a backward step xD

It's been said already, but School Rumble is awesome.

There are 2 seasons that have been released, and 2 OVA episodes. There was also a 2-episode long season 3 where they crowbarred an ending in (compressed a TON of chapters to 2 episodes).

Still one of my all time favorite series though :D The manga is good too!

I'm surprised that no one mention Gintama in these anime suggestion thread ever. It's probably, in my opinion, the greatest anime/manga ever made. And yes, even better than the big 3.

Edit: some clips on youtube

I'm going to suggest the one I always suggest when these threads come up, because no-one else does- Bakemonogatari.

Also CLANNAD, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Shakugan no Shana and Spice & Wolf.

A minority of the fans are retarded, yeah, but if they're happy, they're happy. As for the rest of us, we can enjoy it in our own ways. Yu-Gi-Oh season 0 was pretty nice, not really SOL but entertaining.. and set in a high school =D nah it's probably got too much of a plot.. I am surprised no one has suggested Sunshine Sketch, or is that because the anime version isn't any good? I've only read the manga. And...what was the other one.. two actually... dammit, i can't remember what they were called, but they both fit your description. I don't have any other suggestions, sorry :<

There are very few main characters that have little Background Development.
Thats one reason why i love One Piece.
And like you said, i also felt for the characters.
I felt for Zolo, Nico, Nami, Luffy, Sanji, Chopper, Franky....it would be easier to list the characters that didn't make me sad with their Backstory.
:p

Iv heard that too, i know Oda worked with Nobihiro Watsuki for a while as an assistant..or i that its the other way around.
Watsuki is the Creator of Rurouni Kenshin, my most favorite Manga of all time.

Lol.
My income has been slow the past few months so i haven't been able to get the Manga and Anime i want...
And with the different Boxsets and Art Books(Not to mention games) coming out and already out...i hope my Job picks back up again soon.
Though im lucky that my local Bookstores and Movie Stores are usually up to date with the Dub.

UHm, I'm not gonna recommend any mainstream stuff. Most people have got that covered.
for romance:I suggest Spice and Wolf
Bakemontegari
and finally Speed Grapher.

Haha!
I would suggest the Manga anyway, the Anime cut the story short and messed with some important characters.
But i agree, it was hilarious.
