For me, they can tolerate sunlight for a brief period of time, though it burns more than a mortal, but after a while they become extremely weak, sick, before collapsing and dying. That's how I tend to play out vampires, but often times I do follow the no sunlight rule. Personally anything that doesn't involve sparkling is fine.

Depends on what 'vampire universe' you're talking about, but its true, starlight is the same as the sun. The moon, however, is reflected light; it doesn't have any UV light.
So you're implying that it's UV light rather than visible light that harms the vampires?
Well yeah, how often do you see a vampire in a room with lamps on. All the frigin time.
So an alternative to sunlight is a UV lamp?

Interesting. A bit less handy than a silver cross, but whaddya gonna do?
Yeah, i tend to think more along the lines of Blade rather than any of the other vampire shows.

Blade was a half vampire. he had all the pros of being a vampire and none of the cons.

I always thought that really powerful vampires like Alucard from Hellsing could walk in sunlight but it weakened them. Water though, that is a pain for vampires.

We all know, save for Stephanie Meyer, that Vampires cannot walk in sunlight, but only come out at night.

Question is, since starlight is sunlight come from far away suns and the moons light is nothing but reflected sunlight, can a Vampire only go out when it's an overcast night?

I realise the whole 'walking in darkness' thing is probably a symbol of good and evil, light and darkness etc. I'm just wondering, if it were all real, could a Vampire walk amongst stars and the moon?
Technically the sun is the closest star and those of the night sky are barely twinkles in the sky. The moon is reflected light so the radiation or whatnot isn't that big of a deal.

For "science" refer to Porphyry.

I don't know personally but I am a big fan of most things of myth or fiction. So, if anyone has an answer they can back up with facts(er, as factual as you can get talking about Vampires) hit me up please.

Is everyone here is aware that starlight and sunlight are exactly the same thing?
Stars are suns just to clarify.

I like the Buffyverse way, they will burn after prolonged exposure but they can get away with shielding themselves with jackets or cloaks (which does beg the question why none of them didn't just make a full body suit and go out killing in the day.)
Actually, they do. The rpg has an option to stitch a full-body sunprotecting suit right onto the skin for a vampire character, in the cyberpunk alternative setting presented in the Slayer's handbook (it also comes with retractable needles on the fingers, with a vacuum-pump connected to the mouth for feeding, the mouth is of course covered by the suit, so they don't get burned up internally, convinient, huh?). They can also replace many of their internal organs with new fancy gadgets since they don't use them anymore.

You learn something new every day.

Don't trash a new vampire franchise (twilight) for ignoring a relatively new rule (sun vampy-kill).

On topic tho - I would imagine they'd be okay. I can't remember exactly how much more crap the Sun pumps onto us compared to moonlight/starlight. In terms of magnitude however it would be like daytime for a Vampire would be like being in a house fire to a human, while night would be like being in a room with a candle.

The weird one is Werewolves, if the moon turns them into giant beasts, the Sun should make them into demi-gods or something. xD

Depends on the mythology. Personally, I prefer werecreatures to anything at all, simply because, at least according to White Wolf's World of Darkness mythos, there are stages of transformation and they aren't slavering beastmen unless they want to be. (After the first time, I mean.)

Though I've never played the Masquerade...probably should...actually, I should probably play something beyond D&D and Werewolf...like Call of Cthulu...or Sin-Eaters...*goes to try and find online rulebooks*

actually pyrophylic hemophilia (vampire)is a genetic disorder that was wiped off the face of the earth but it has been proven to exist the bearer of it had photo-phobia making it hard for them to see in sunlight (i actually have this trait) had something simmiler to albino's disorder except they kept there skin and hair coler (this made them burn fairly easily but not burst into flame) and a disorder where they could only generate plasma when breaking down blood (even animals) but as civilization came about and legends started to form they eradicated people with this disorder from the population this is curticy of my crypto-biology class in collage

I said starlight in the sense that it's really just sunlight, but from far away.
I haven't read Dracula, but as far asi know, he couldn't go out in sunlight. Could he?
I know.
Nor have I, but I'm fairly certain, as I said, that he could.
Dracula could go outside in the sunlight, but he couldn't use his shapeshifting, hypnosis, or de-materialization. I don't remember whether or not he kept his enhanced strength and speed, but I think he did.
