I played a game of online chess against a friend of mine. What the hell does that mean?

Starcraft 2's Storm of the Imperial Sanctum. Do I get to choose any hero any time from the selection available, or do I have to choose one and stick with it? Also, is it multiplayer or am I stuck fighting the AI all the time?
