If you can thik of a suitable substitute then you may have a valid reason to whine about this. In all seriousness though, in SCII not only is the power armor standard issue, but so are the .50 Cal Gauss Rifles. But even with all these upgrades, The Zerg still manage to kill everyone. I guess even with badass weapons casualties are still very high.

Besides, Blizzard sure knows how to make an awesome Intro with Power Armor assembly:

I notice a grand total of two examples there. Also, Warhammer 40k had power armour long before 40k RTS games were made.

If its not power armour, the whats it going to be?
How are they even going to find a small rational answer for the humans to face off against stronger alien hordes?

In those games, humans are pathetically weak.
So the power armour makes up for it as a sort of "balance".

Would you want to be trapped in a hazardous environment with just Kevlar or some sort of actual protection against poison, space, lasers, explosives, alien claws etc. most power armor doubles as Protection against the elements as well as against oncoming fire. Some are also space suits or like the H.E.V. in half life hazmat equipment. Always remember the golden rule if it's sci-fi and not a normal human it's probably ridiculously better than normal humans.

Seriously. Enough with the armor. I want new things.

EDIT: Don't forget you have to break around 12 major bones to get into SC2 armor.

So what would futuristic humanoids who are following a vaguely plausible technology progression use to move about in hazardous combat environments? I mean its probably more accurate to replace all the biological units with drones in any game set more than 10-20 years in the future, but that might be a little bit boring.

I don't see power armour as any more of a cliche than guns and swords, in that the only cliched part of power armour is the name. Somethings are just damn effective; relatively light object that can fire high velocity pieces of matter at distant targets, yes thats a gun and it is always useful in combat, some form of protective layer that enhances survivability coupled with atmospheric controls and whatever else can be duct taped on yep also effective and right now we call them exo-skeletons and they are probably going to start being deployed in the next few years.

What's wrong with them wearing power armor? Also, your two examples work as follows, so far as I understand it.

Blizzard went to Games Workshop(the creators of the original 40K tabletop game) and said "Hey we want to make an RTS of 40K!" Games Workshop was like "...Nah, we're good." So Blizzard put together StarCraft, which is heavily inspired by 40K and Starship Troopers(which, as I understand it, is the first thing to include these power armored space marines, and so also inspired 40K itself.)
While Starship Troopers is a major influence on WH40k, it wasn't the first example of powered armor. (I forget what was). But IIRC there was actual R&D on powered armor before Starship Troopers went to print (which ultimately failed spectacularly).

It's not really a leap to think that soldiers of the future wont be running around in a nice dressing gown.

Power armour makes sense to me, whatever the influence, whatever the thinking, whatever the inspiration... it's probably what will actually happen if human beings are still involved in fighting in person in the future, therefore perfectly fair for all sci fi to use.

We as humans are weak and frail, squishy organisms inferior to most alien races portrayed In games, take a regular human, put him In a room with a brute, a bug from starship troopers, a zerg, and a xenomorph ... he ain't coming back alive. Now give him a set of power armor, and chances of survival increase. We as humans will need to enhance ourselves anyway when we reach space travel, just setting foot on a new planet will most likely require advanced armor. But beyond this It's also fun imagery, who wants to see some marine ducking and dodging when you could see a giant hulking mech smashing through the front line.

What's with Medieval RTS games and full plate armour?

Almost every medieval RTS game has metal armour like Age of Empires II, Medieval II: Total War, they should think of something more interesting.

I guess the image that is carved on everyone's mind is that soldiers wear armour. The only vaguely sensible way to give a soldier a suit of armour in the future is make it into powered combat armour. I suppose one alternative would be filing your soldiers with bionic implants and then saying that they move so quickly they can dodge bullets, which would be cool, but weird, or just filling them with bionic implants and saying that their skin is now their power armour, which would be even cooler and even weirder.

Either way, the safest, most tried and true method is that future soldiers wear power armour, and it causes the game to make sense and keeps it alive under brief scrutiny.

megaman doesnt were power armor though he is a robot and the guy from dead space just wears(what atleast looked like to me)future leather armor
the ninja guy from metal slug looks like he's wearing a nanosuit not power armor
The Dead Space RIG can contain features such as allowing you to lift heavy objects with minimal effort.
The Ninja from Metal Gear Solid uses metal armor that increases his strength and allows him to cloak.
So yeah, these two would qualify as power armor IMO.
Megaman's an android for the most part (exept when he's a Tron-esque combat program), so yeah, I'll change that.

Dont forget Alien and Predator.
What about Alien and Predator? I can't recall ANY Power Armour being used in; The Alien Quadrilogy, the Predator Triliogy or either of the AvP movies.

Power Armour is kinda needed when you look at differences in units, what would you have a Space Marine wear when he's up aginst an Ultralisk? Or if a Chaos Marine is up against a Dreadnaught?

Most sci-fi RTS games don't even have foot soldiers, they usually take place in space battles.

What

Do you expect them to face down the Tyranid in nothing but their skivvies?
the IG do it everyday. They go out fearless with nothing but a t shirt and a flashlight and still find ways to win. power armor is for wimps.
BULLSHIT. They take the Tyranids in what they do because they're more afraid of what a commissar or the inquisition will do to them if they ran.

power armor = almost impenetratable armor, plus it's insanely heavy
nanosuit = cloak,speed,strengh,armor powers,it's like a pyjama lol
My definition of power armor is as such:
1. It is worn, not operated. (Armor)
2. Limb movement and other functions are supported by mechanical energy. (Power)

While my definition is certainly more esoteric, it's decidedly less subjective than yours. Starcraft marines' armor is classified as "light", and can easily be pierced by ghosts, hydralisks, zerglings, etc. I consider it power armor because it's less like armor and more like a mechanized exoskeleton.

That's the armor of the heavy replica soldiers. Either they have really thick armor and super strength or their armor is at least in some part mechanized. I tend to think the latter due to their wall-bursting efforts and omgwtf durability.
