I started my paperwork for enlisting in the United States Navy today, currently plowing through my clearance stuff. I'm planning on going into Special Warfare, SEALs specifically, but since I can't choose that as my initial rating I'll probably pick something in the Nuclear Program. I can't wait to finish my senior year so can go to Great Mistakes and after that BUD/S.
Since I'm planning on making a career in the Navy, I'll probably end up using the Seaman to Admiral program to go to college, or just take some internet classes sponsored by Uncle Sam.

Later.

Congratulations. I'm a big fan of the Navy, would probably join myself if I was the military type. Was just in New York City for Fleet Week, was on the USS Iwo Jima. Beautiful ship.

SEALS are awesome. I'd also like to be a submariner. Submarines are awesome.

EDIT: Almost forgot to wish you good luck.

Good luck.

if you have really good grades you should have applied to the naval academy then graduate as an officer then undertake seals training as an officer.

First I don't have the grades, but my recruiter said with my ASVAB score being what it is a high enough score on my ACT would qualify me. HOWEVER, since I'm trying to maximize my time in service, starting as an officer would be detrimental to me. Also, as an officer I only get one shot in BUD/S, as enlisted I can have more than one opportunity and with slightly less suicidal standards. I'd be better off trying to become an officer later.

I come from a Navy/Marine family. Best of luck going into the service, it really does open a lot of doors and provides a great foundation. And it shows you have courage a lot of people lack these days.

Good luck sir, hope you don't get killed, or something. Yeah, I think that's what i mean.
Do not address me as sir, as I am not an officer. I work for a living.

My apologies, I just tend to refer to people as sir for no reason.

I'll never, especially with my numerous unlikely accomplishments, try to steer you away from something that you want to do...but have you looked at the attrition rates for either of those programs? I'm ex Navy, and I got to work not only with a number of nuke dropouts, but also quite a few BUD/S dropouts.

The nuke program is very, very difficult. The reenlistment bonus is grand, should you wish to reenlist, but you're almost guaranteed sub duty, and you'll see less leave than anyone else on the ship. Nuke school is not fun, and neither is the service as a nuke. Many of the nuke dropouts who I worked with fell a bit behind, then gave up and went into different ratings.

BUD/S matches the academic filter of nuke school with a more physical/mental filter. They are quick to drop people at the first sign of physical trouble (I mean as simple as a twisted ankle- you're possibly out and in a crap rating as a regular enlisted.)

I'm really not trying to nay-say your dreams or anything. Just be careful, and don't believe the recruiters. If/when you make it through either of those challenging programs, I'll be the first to tip my hat to you. Good luck.

While I dislike people entering the military at such a young age, I'm honored that people like you have the courage and patriotism to devote your life to the protection of white-collar types like me.

Good luck. I'll pray for you.

I have only one question.

Do you have "In the Navy" looped on your mp3 player right now? It might enable you to be all you can be.

All joking aside, good luck, and pack some Gravol.
